There has to be more to it with Trews retention, surely

The club have been playing ducks and drakes alot regarding contracts over the past few years, might Trews rookie listing be a reworking of an existing contract?

I am clutching at straws here
It makes no sense at all to give him another year with what is still available

Has to be some behind the scene ****ery going on

Regarding Trew & Winder - could it be that those on the inside at WCE know the past 2 seasons have a been a complete shambles and so are thinking that Trew & Winder have not really had a good chance to show their wares or improve and therefore possibly have more upside than we've seen so far...
I just don't see how Trew jumps ahead of any of the existing mids like Shuey, Yeo, Kelly or Sheed, isn't already passed by the likes of Hough or Culley or won't be superseded by the likes of Chesser, Hewitt and Ginbey. Would rather take a punt on someone in a different position or with an x-factor.

I'd be keen on Broadbent in the rookie draft. Reasoning being:

1. Neither Bailey Williams or Cal Jamieson are going to be no. 1 rucks in the future and at least one of them needs to be cut at the end of this year;
2. Talls take longer to develop so make sense for the rookie list;
3. we are running out of time to find a number 1 ruck for post Nic Nat; and as a result
3. We increase our chances of getting a number 1 ruck out of this draft with Barnett and Broadbent
Surely we don't delist 22yo 200cm+ players.

If rucks not the number one position put some work into them as key forwards. Need to be patient.

Trew doesn't even make sense from a list make up perspective.

He's dropped behind 3 of our draftees (heck, arguably Long as well) over the past few days. He offers nothing in other roles, as far as I can tell. We'd be much better off using that spot on a flanker like Gilbey.

Ignoring Gilbey, the redrafting of Trew is baffling. Last season showed he was rated even below top-up players on our list. I guess there's either monetary reasons, or that he's 20 and may be a late bloomer a la Hutchings.
Yeah I reckon monetary is a factor, as we already cut Langdon and will be paying him for next season and The West kept reporting both Trew and Winder were contracted for next season so we would have to pay both them too. So maybe the club feels we may as well keep them if we're paying them.
The way we delisted both with a rookie carrot dangled, could have been deliberately done to put a rocket up both of them too. Winder has lots of talent, but just looks like he doesn't put the work in to get the best out of himself. Hoping the penny has dropped for him and he has had a big off season.

Thing is, Trew couldn't get games last season with a decimated squad. He was gifted a pair of games despite middling WAFL form and despite the fact we had almost nobody else left to select

With that in mind, how is he possibly expected to get games next year and displace the talent we just acquired, along with us having a healthier senior list?

surely we’re not redrafting Trew ? Shown nothing really, be better off with a mature age player from around the state leagues! What happened to Carey Voss ? Dominated the sanfl this year only 22

Don't forget we also got Jayden Hunt before the draft.

While I agree, we never know what issues are present behind the scenes, there may be a reason the club will support him, or not.

This. I guess it is money driven.

To be fair to Trews performance this year and those saying “he wasn’t getting games”, he was coming off a 9 month injury where he could do limited running.

Not the most shocking thing that he didn’t have the running capacity to impact away from contests.

Would’ve preferred Gilbey but not mad about it.

Given what we just saw with Joyce, gilbey is prob a no go zone for eagles.

Trew is an odd one, my one explanation is that the eagles are hoping to build some stability in the beagles team and hoping a more known quality can make the team more competitive and hence help with the development of the many young important assets.

Clutching I know..
