Nothing on the rumour that we're potentially redrafting Ainsworth?

Crazy. Thought he'd address that.
He did say he was putting together a big bowl of chodes for when Hewett falls to our 3rd pick

O’Brien talking to Duffield gave absolutely nothing away even joked about doing that during the interview. Main questions covered -

• Best available or needs with first two picks - best available initially with later picks being influenced by who’s available at those picks and who we’ve already picked
• Describe draft pool - some quality talls but overall is weighted towards midfielder and running types
• Likelihood of WA talent (Ginbey, Busslinger and Hewett named by Duff) getting through to our picks - hard to know as they’re all talented, bonus if they do but said there’ll be be good options at our picks regardless
• Go home factor and has it increased - Maybe a slight shift but not a huge factor, will take WA player if two players are close but will back the club to develop and retain any player as the retention rate has been good in the past
• Next years draft pool - High end talent looks very good but cautions that players don’t always develop as expected. Did point out that clubs were keen to gather future picks due to the talent coming through next year
• Have clubs contacted us re pick swaps for this year or next - had contact yes but more clubs enquiring rather than anything concrete. Prepared to keep an open mind like last year if an opportunity presents
• Who would he take with 1&2 if he had those two picks - reluctantly admitted to Cadman and Wardlaw being likely in the top 3 or 4 picks and would be pleasantly surprised if either was still there at our pick
• Wardlaws hamstrings and how medical assessments are made - medical screenings are made available to medical staff only, not recruiters, and they provide advice based on the information given
• Need to recruit ruck depth and whether we’d take one with one of our first four picks (noting that we were scouting Barnett) - potentially yes but depends on who’s available. Ruck is a need in the next few years with Naitanui aging. Noted that ruck position is unique in the market and the draft pool of rucks in recent years hadn’t kept up with demand
• How many drafts has he been involved in and will there be a few more - 22/23 and hopefully a few more yet. Said he’s looking forward to what the next few drafts will bring. (Seems like rumours of his demise were exaggerated)
• Other questions about how long it takes to assess if a draft was successful, his favourite draft and favourite draft pick that he gave generic non-commital answer to
• What type of player will Chesser be - combination of speed and size will allow him to play outside (wing, forward or half back) but also be able to go on ball and contribute there

Like I said gave nothing away
  • Best available
  • WA talent a bonus but not a priority
  • Open to pick swaps on trade night if beneficial
  • Chesser will win a Brownlow

ROB should’ve been a politician. Manages to talk without ever actually saying anything. I guess that’s what you want from a recruiter though.

ROB certainly earning his money in terms of media commitments this offseason.

Interesting that he acknowledges Cadman and Wardlaw as the likely two first picks after the Ashcroft bid. Doesn’t give much else away.

Reckon he’s been asked the “WA talent or best available despite the current go home factor” question in every bloody interview. Would be infuriating having to answer the same question ad nauseam.

I am loving the way he keeps everything open and plays it with a complete straight bat.

What did I learn from this interview? The 2022 draft is more for midfielders and running players. The top end of the 2023 draft has some very good talent.

We need top end midfielders. First rounders. 8, 12 and 20 should be mids regardless. We can fill key positions with 26 71.

Sheuy is done..might play 13 games this yr.
Yeo will go down back.
Redden retired
Gaff needs to go back to the wing away from stoppages.
O'Neal needs to step up to next level
SPS isn't a mid
Hough on the wing
Kelly has shown he doesn't cope being the main man, gets a hard tag and is ineffectual. He needs others to be doing the grunt work. His best was with Dangerfield, ablett and Selwood as the engine room.

That leaves 3 very inexperienced unproven players. Although I am quite bullish on these 3, we need depth.
Culley
Clarke
Chesser.

We could not be any more desperate for quality mids of all persuasions. If we don't the midfielder of Melbourne, pies, dogs blues etc will smash us

8 McKenzie, clarke, Humphrey, ginbey, poo
12 has to be Hewett.
20 hotten, cowen

Don't forget Sheed.

It's easy to do after last season.

Where so you see Sheed playing? I see Sheed as being most effective as a half forward. His in ability to tackle opponents is a worry at stoppages and he is good for some rotations but no more that 30% midfield.

Sheed is best remembered for the run of form in 2018. He was on the wing replacing Gaff and he also rested forward.

Perhaps it is he and Kelly that could well be a tag team. Both can play forward. Both are good in stoppages provided they are the outside mid in the situation. When they play at stoppages together, we lose contested football.

In 2023, Sheed will be 28 and Kelly 29. I think they will be good to support the youngsters as we rebuild but do not see them as midfielders when we next play finals. Or should I say that if we are heavily reliant on these 2 to play high % midfield, we won't be making finals.

No chance Hewett is going in the top 10, likely available for us at pick 20. Reasons have been covered previously, his football could be spectacular however the off-field stuff has made at least one club and likely more put a line through him (to the point they wouldn't touch him even at pick 30+).

GWS will take the chance if we don't take him with our second pick.
Not high with him on our first but I think mid-late first round is about his spot so I reckon we'll go him with our second pick.

Most likely scenario looking like

Essendon: Tsatas/Phillipou
GC: Humphrey
Hawthorn: Tsatas/Phillipou
Geelong: Clark
West Coast: Ginbey
St Kilda: Mackenzie
Carlton: Hollands
Bulldogs: Busslinger
West Coast: Allan

Barring any surprises. WCE_phil like if you agree

Doubt it we will regret doing a Tim Kelly with him and leaving him on the board.

Ill vomit if we take Allan at pick 8. He’s still only a second to third rounder that can sprint a quick 20m.

When fit he can rack it up as well as anyone and is better defensively than Gaff.

Can see him as a high half forward, winger, rotation on ball.

Cannot believe he is 28 already.

F@$ that.

I'm taking McKenzie before ginbey and Hewett next. Allen can request a trade home in 2 if he's any good.

If you look closely at the 2018 stats sheets. Kelly and shreds stats are near identical.

I'll never forget when all the talk about going after Kelly, I would regularly point out we had a player of that calibre with identical stats in sheed. Even now when you do a I side by side compare stats on the AFL app for career there damn close.

We're not playing dream team though

No one has any guts on here, take the risk. High risk high reward. The two blokes with possibly the highest ceilings are Allan and Ginbey. Do we want to take a little risk to possibly end up 2 stars or go a safe bet and get a couple of good role players. Hewitt iS a cog down in potential imo
Or they end up as the next Cale Morton and Kane Lucas....no thanks.
I don't mind so much if we take Ginbey with one of our first rounders (although he's not my first choice) but taking Ginbey and Allan with our first two would be ****ing dumb.
