FFS was doing a full write up on hall and browser shit itself.

At lower levels he has shown his best footy on the outside being able to find space and use his left foot really, really well. He has moved more inside at lower levels and was really starting to produce as an inside mid before earning a league promotion last weekend and whilst spending some time inside his best footy was more as a first receiver or on the outside.

I want to see the Champs and how his footy progresses and where and how he plays there. If he plays inside at the champs and produces well, as well as providing good kicking and link up on the outside he will fly up draft boards.

Has the right attitude, leadership, size and skills. From what I have heard unfortunately he is a dockers supporter. Have to have at least one negative in there. Even if he just continues current form he'll end up top 20, if he continues to improve over the year then he could go top 10. If he has a major injury and or doesn't produce at the champs then he goes 40+

Just remember Gilbey (not the same type of player this is just an example) was considered a top 30 lock who could go higher than that. Ended up with an interrupted year followed by a serious injury and went undrafted. Broadbent had just been at worst 3rd best on ground in the equivalent academy game vs Collingwoods VFL side and still looked like a first round prospect.

So much changes throughout the year, but Hall is on a fast upwards trajectory at this stage.

On Sam Van Rooyen the only other thing i'd like to point out is I don't think his kicking is as good as his brothers. He is still a work in progress on the year and again it's a long time before draft day. He is however heading in a fast upwards trajectory, particularly if he grows a couple of cm.

Next four games are winnable: Carlton (home), Richmond, GC (home) and Hawthorn. Wont win them all but if we could go into the bye with three wins, I’d be happier.
What have you been watching over the last year and a half. We have won 3 of our last 31 games and you would be happy if we won 3 of the next 4.
I wish I had your optimism 🤣

Brilliant! Thank you for your insight mate.

No, two of our next five to take us to three at the bye. I think we’ve shown more competitiveness this year, I’m hopeful we can beat GC and Hawthorn. If we can’t, then we’re probably going to win no more games for the year and be the worst AFL team since Fitzroy. I don’t think we’re that bad.

Nah, we'll still beat pies at home and freo in the next derby.

I did the ladder predictor and we finish top if we win every game by 10 goals and other results go our way.

So yeah we're showing signs but still bit poopy

Amiss, JVR, Bazzo, Andrew, Lord, Aleer, Conway.

Andrew highest talent, JVR most likely to make it, Amiss as an old style lead from the goal square full forward.

WCE knew JVR wouldn't make it to our second round picks but were hopeful on Bazzo and we got him.

I didn't rate Jack Williams at all. He has shown a lot more than I thought he had in him and I hope that continues but I didn't think he was a draftable talent.

TBH and looking back if JVR had of been 3-4cm taller I would have had him ranked higher than Amiss.

Mac Andrew is an absolute superstar athlete and talent but was always 4 years away from making an impact. I honestly can't believe GC are playing him ATM, he still looks like he'll get broken in a strong tackle.

WCE expected Erasmus to be there for our first pick. When fremantle took him thats when plans changed and we slid down the order for our second preference. Going into draft day WCE genuinely thought freo were taking Amiss and Johnson. Now Erasmus is showing not that much so it's hard to feel down about the Chesser pick. I didn't agree with it, but the way the club went about it after missing our first preference was very well done.

BTW as service veteran, my son as well i've already had a few since the dawn service. So you can all keep blowing smoke up my ass for the Hough and Bazzo picks.

Greg Clark was promised a main list spot with our last draft pick.

(also remember that missing Erasmus meant we took Chesser and Coby Burgiel)
Don't rate Gibcus?

Yes Clark adds that experience and leadership , got a way to go but as Subiaco captain certainly good for Eagles young group .
Hough and Bazzo look natural footballers , I suppose all AFL players are but they both read the play well .
Was surprised by Clark's leadership watching him live, it is very noticeable in the warm ups and during the game. He is very vocal, gives direction and goes out of his way to celebrate/encourage players. I only find it a bit strange as he hasn't played many AFL games and hasn't cemented his own spot and probably wouldn't be playing if not for injuries and he is directing more experienced players.

What if mid season trades were a thing in 2023?

Who would we target from another team with a realistic trade?

We can be glad they're not. Mid Season trades will be contending clubs raiding the cellar-dwellars to try and cover a deficiency in order to win a flag. We would be having players poached for us and unlikely to get good value.

Edit: Imagine if Collingwood came to Darling now and said we want you to come over for a few years and we should be able to win a couple of premierships. If he asks the club are they really going to say no to someone who's already given us so much? We get a late second rounder (due to them winning flag) but it robs us of the support to develop Allen or Waterman.

Some players are just injury prone.

My son has a mate who is a very good young player, trained with the NT u18's.

The poor kid cant play 3 games without breaking something. Collar bone x 2, arm, ankle and jarred knee. Then comes all the soft tissue injuries after rehab. Just cant stay on the park.
Its usually the burst type players, plodders never get injured haha

But wouldn't those teams then lose even more come draft time?

Only 1 team can win the flag so it can backfire for top teams also

or have a rule where the traded player returns to original club after season ends.

purely a last burst at a flag.

But the lower team can trade back at lower rate

eg darling for 2nd rounder.

We get darling back then Pies get 3rd rounder or worse

Can also accelerate the rebuild if you could trade a older guy chasing a flag at the end of their career but the missing piece for a premiership for a team say a McGovern or gaff and we get picks for them, think it would be a very nice spot having 4 2nd rounders in the draft

I'd be curious to see the informed members of this board and their player rankings from the last few drafts, if you still have them?
Super roughly I had:

20212022
Nick DaicosWill Ashcroft
Jason Horne-FrancisAaron Cadman
Josh RacheleMattaes Phillipou
Josh WardGeorge Wardlaw
Finn CallaghanBailey Humphrey
Harry Sheezel
Ben HobbsJedd Busslinger
Matthew Roberts
Jacob Van-RooyenLewis Hayes
Connor MacDonaldElijah Tsatas
Jye AmissJhye Clark
Neil ErasmusJakob Ryan
Angus SheldrickJacob Konstanty
Josh GoaterCam Mackenzie
Zac TaylorOliver Hollands
Nasiah Wanganeen-MileraHarry Barnett
Toby ConwayReuben Ginbey
Tyler SonsieElijah Hewett
Josh GibcusLachlan Cowan
Josh SinnMatthew Jefferson
Mac AndrewJames Van Es
Jaspa Fletcher

For us specifically I expected these guys to go around:

Chesser late 2nd round
Hough late 2nd round
Bazzo mid 3rd round
Williams mid 3rd round

Ginbey late 1st round
Hewett late 1st round
Barnett early 2nd round
Burgiel mid 2nd round
Long mid 3rd round

So IMO we overpaid for Chesser and went about where we should have for everyone else. Also I like our (seemingly) change of tactics of drafting players who have performed in their 18th year rather than on reputation.

Chesser: literally what we have seen. Was great at 16s by all reports
Hough: came on a lot as the season went on
Bazzo: was disappointing but played fwd for Swan Districts rather than in defence.
Williams: Killed it at colts but had less impact playing for WA. Worth a punt based on his footy skills despite not being all that athletic.

Ginbey: Had the breakaway fend offs
Hewett: Super one week and invisible the next. I dont think he is the star everyone want him to be but will have his moments.
Barnett: Dominant around the ground. Has a lot of athleticism and & great overhead when he gets a run at it. Struggled against bigger bodies in the ruck.
Burguiel: Has a bit of X factor and pace which we were chasing
Long: Natural & clean player with a knock on height

I think the AFL needs to pass a rule that max contract length is 5 years. No club can have a player contracted for more than 5 years. The contracts clubs are being forced to cough up for good players get longer and longer. Richmond gave out 7 year deals last season. There might be other clubs who have given out longer deals. An incompetent administration could potentially decimate a club for the best part of a decade if they go mad they offering up multiple 7 - 9 year deals and things go bad. That is the opposite of what the AFL says it wants.

As Buffett says he invests in companies so simple that even an idiot could run because eventually at some point, just by the law of averages, there will be an idiot who somehow ends up in charge. There will always be incompetent administrations at some AFL clubs at any point in time. The AFL should limit how much long term damage they can do.
