Following on from my previous post…

Every year the draft crop is different, the depth of top tier talent, second tier and third tier is different, and then the depth beyond the first round is different.

The 2018 draft was very deep for top end talent, second tier talent, but then very, very little talent after about pick 17 or 18 (after Duursma basically).

2017 had no top tier talent. 2020 and 2021 were both deep in that third tier of talent, out 30+.

And then there are talented kids who get overlooked early every year. They’re either too small, or too slow, or aren’t a good kick, but just about elite in every other facet.

If you’re a club with multiple positions to fill, and only one pick at the top end of the draft, you balance up the likely talent available at your first pick, with the probable talent available at your next picks/pick.

Sometimes there’s an obvious no brainer selection at your first pick, sometimes there’s not, and that’s when you much more criticism of a selection.
I expect the commentary of the 2022 draft class to be late to come to a strong consensus as to depth and top 20. COVID has robbed many a chance to develop and a load of Victorians are missing 2 years of football.

Meanwhile in SA and WA, we have had a pretty good run of a season - all be it 2020 was very short.

I have managed to see a decent amount of WA Colts and a couple of the WA v SA games. I am really looking forward to the carnival this year and finally getting to see the best against the best.

Drafts often get called weak or great depending whether it has a fab 4 or attractive KPF's.

I think 2017 was a very good draft year - what it did not have is a top 5 that were that much better however it did bat deep with quality through to the end of the second round. I loved the way we had 4 second rounders. I am mindful that 2018 was a rubbish year to be holding picks past 20 as the strength dropped off badly. I recall seeing the run of mids in the early to mid 20's meaning all we got was XON and Foley.

As it stands today 4, 21, 22 and 40. I have seen enough local and discussions with mates in Vic to know that 4, 21 and 22 will give us very good prospects. I would be happy to forward sell a future first IF we finish lower enough and another club believes we will be down for a couple of years and values a future single digit pick. Picks 4, 8, 21 and 22 would see us restock quickly. kind of like how we did in 2017 but with better choices.

That said, I will be looking at the year and especially the carnival to provide more clarity (in what is a crystal ball art form anyway)

I think that is the issue. English is a guy who is playing well at the moment and has trade value, but as a club we need to start rebuilding through the draft. We have a history of paying well for traded in players. I can't see a way that we land English without acting like Geelong at the trade table and leaving you guys upset or acting like West Coast at the trade table and leaving us frustrated.
Tim English is 24, as long as we don't overpay, he would be a good pick-up that would fit in well with a rebuilding strategy. Still young but capable of making an immediate impact.

Reading the dogs board they are crying out for a key backman. I’d be loathe to lose Harry Edwards though
I’d see what else they would add to get Barrass. English and their R1 for Tommy and a R3 or even a future second.

We have Harry as a cheaper alternative and Bazzo will take over from Guv.

Draft for Broadbent with the Doggies as a 2 to 3 year project

We didn’t even give up Brander when Geelong were sniffing around, there’s no point throwing up names in a trade for English. It’ll be picks if it happens unless someone wants to go there.

He's just not worth the price. He's not a genuine number 1 ruckman.

Williams and a second won't get it done unless Williams somehow shows a lot more than what I've seen.

Agree. :whitecheck:

And there is also a twist to what you are saying, because if Williams starts to show more than what we have seen ........... then why would we not keep him and use our picks for drafting other positional needs and young talent.

English for me, should not be our number 1 priority at this years trade and draft period.

Barrass is only two years older than English. I honestly would be fuming if we go lose TB or high draft picks at English. As good as English is around the ground his shitty ruck work doesn't warrant what we should give up.

We are better off banking the picks and trying to turn baz/strnadica into decent rucks.
