KL whisper was that English at Eagles next year , Karl's right half the time but is close to the Eagles I would imagine ...what we pay is the question .
Don't mind English looks like another forward / midfielder and okay Ruckman all in one .

.
yeah, we have to use our first, which is a saving grace really. Stops the club from going all in on English.

Actually......thats not correct.

We need to use a 1st round pick.

Not necessarily the one we will get.

If we had pick 1 and a team offered multiple 1sts like North was offered last season. We'd be mugs to not take that deal.

Our 2nd and Ports would also get us another 1st, freeing up one of them to trade.

So sure, not all in, but still active.

Are there any Rucks in the draft coming through? anyone we should be keeping an eye on?

A couple but most notably Jackson Broadbent, WA kid and he’s a freak, already played league footy, he’s 202CM I believe, very good around the ground

In a perfect world we can land one of Hewitt, Wardlaw, Tsatas and then Broadbent or Keeler on draft night

I’d happily give up an early second rounder for English - which would probably necessitate a bottom 4 finish and the threat of the preseason draft. His ruck work looks much improved this year and he hasn’t hit his prime yet for a ruckman, which seems to be late 20’s. He’s currently 24 and with most ruckman nowadays can seemingly go till early 30’s. That could definitely be in our window.

Let's see how the season pans out before we sell the farm (and our likely first decent draft pick in years) for English hey?
Rucks traditionally take a bit to come on, I mean Lycett used to try and mark the ball like he was trying to hit it back over a volleyball net and he used to jump for the ruck contest while the ball was still in crowd after a goal. He turned out alright for us.
Give the guys we've got a chance to show a bit in a season where we're likely not getting near finals anyway.
And it's not like English is a first ruck so then we still have to grab someone to take that role, English is a no from me unless we get him for a lot less than he's worth.

Absolutely no doubt Tim English is going to cost a hell of a lot both in terms of draft capital and salary cap space.

He's a good player for sure and I think his work in the ruck has improved this year but I still think he's better when key forward is his primary role and he chops out in the ruck. I'm not sure the Dogs are fully getting the best out of him. If they found a genuine number one ruck (Martin is not the player he was) that would give them a very imposing tall set up in the front half with Naughton (gun) and a developing JUH floating around as well.

Ultimately we aren't looking for the missing piece of a flag. Blockbuster trades shouldn't be our go for a few years at least. We are a long long way from thinking about these sort of things. Low risk high reward trades like SPS for peanuts is what we should be concentrating on for the next little bit.

If we were in flag mode you could probably make a case for going hard at English given JK is probably retiring at the end of the season. That would keep our three key forward set up but we'd have a genuine second ruck rather than throwing Oscar to the wolves as we've done.

In Hugh Dixon I think we have a forward and back up ruck option to persist with who is almost certainly never going to cost us a big chunk of salary cap space. Obviously he is only a few games in but the early signs are good that he will provide us with a real value for money option in that role. Is he as good as English? Definitely not. Is he likely to be as good as English? Almost certainly not. But I don't think it's worth allocating $$$$ to this role right now and we are better off keeping that money for the gun midfielder or two (I assume) we are about to draft this year and next.

English will be up for free agency at some point unless the Dogs sign him to a huge contract and although you do generally pay a little bit overs in FA, I think it's better to do that in 4-5 years time when he is 29-ish, we are (hopefully) in a genuine flag winning position and we can see him as a missing piece of the premiership puzzle. If we went for him now, we're going to give up a lot of draft capital, still a big chunk of salary cap space and we have no idea whether we are going to build a squad with a genuine flag winning chance over the next 4 or so years.

Hard to say without more games being played and watched but some names
WA: Broadbent, Condon, Mcwha, Rockley
VIC: Northam, Howe
SA: Welk, Barnett
Allies: Madden
Some thoughts:

Center bounce hitouts are fine for the athletic types with a good leap like Naitanui, Ryder etc. However around the ground the bigger guys have the distinct advantage to body up as well as.
A no.1 ruck ideally has good endurance to be able to play 80-90% game time. Gives the flexibility to play either a hybrid fwd/ruck like Williams or just pinch hit with another tall. Because Naitanui goes so hard we have been forced to play a second ruck every week which kills our team balance and legs late in games.

Yeah with what it would realistically take to land English I’d rather just go for Hewett and Broadbent. English is 25 this year and the majority of our best players are late 20s, so at best we’d be challenging for flags again by the time he’s 28/29 and we wouldn’t get full value for money with him playing alongside a bunch of 18 year olds. Flags aren’t won with trade ins, only exclusively through the draft. Trades are reserved for missing pieces, not entire list rebuilds

Condon chose basketball unfortunately

I’d personally be okay with Harry and a 3rd or future second. I’m guessing the dogs would b1tch slap us out of the building though

Depends on how real the psd threat would be.

We finish last then I could see Harry and a 3rd or future 2nd being possible.

Something equivalent to a later 1st rounder is around the mark.

Yes I know Eagles are weak at the trade table but how often do we finish bottom 3? I will be dissappointed if we finish bottom 3 and dont take advantage of a narrrow window to negotiate a bit harder than we normally do. Even if is to land a Devon Robinson or a Tahner Brahn for a slight discount. Ports 2nd say.

We would be much smarter using that later 2nd on trading in a quality emerging 21 year old mid like one of these guys.
