Wouldn't be surprised if this is simply a ploy from his manager to hold out for more money, especially as he's playing better than ever.

Well given that his manager is Colin Young, who more so than any other Player Manager, uses the media as a primary negotiating tool, I suspect that you are 100% on the money.

We have the opportunity over the next 2 off seasons (2022 and 2023) to bring in some good talent through the draft - with ports 2nd round pick this year plus our own we will have 5 top 30 picks this year and next with the potential to add an extra pick or two in the range with some smart trading/use of future picks.

Along with this we should also be able to relieve the pressure valve on our salary cap. Hurn and JK you’d expect would retire this year along with possibly Shuey depending on his hamstrings. At the very least he’ll been on a reduced contract with his current deal expiring at the end of the year. Sheppards contract will also come off the books

Naitanui’s 3 year deal ends and he’ll likely be in 1 year extension land on reduced money

Aside from perhaps Cole and Rioli (who it should be said owes the club for standing by him) there isn’t any players coming off contract this year that would demand a significant, if any, pay rise

Come 2023 the contracts for McGovern in particular and to a lesser extent Cripps end which will lead to further savings. Again, there aren’t any other players coming off contract in 2023 that’d be demanding a big pay rise unless say Petch or SPS or Chesser really jump out of the box and elevate their game

With all that in mind bringing in someone like English who would require a salary north of $5-600k and at least one first round draft pick would be a mistake. Save the salary cap room for 2024 or 2025 to chase a free agent or trade for someone that fills a list need as we aim to be challenging for our next flag

I like Tinglish.

Watch him every week for SC and he's one of his teams best players in 2022, if not their best so far.

Confidence is growing with every game. Gets clearances, links up, tackles, takes contested marks. Smart player, knows exactly where to run. When to provide a marking target, when to push forward and create a shot at goal, when to drop back into defense to support the backline, he's got a really good tank on him.......

Aaaand then there's the issue with him actually getting hand to the ball in the hitouts. Essentially he's the opposite player of Naitanui. Despite the comments about him being a bit if a nonce, i don't think he's as soft as people think. Just looks a bit too angelic/alien with the pale skin and fair hair.

We have a history of creating decent ruckman. With his natural skills, if we fixed his ruck craft and got his HTA % up, he'd be a weapon.

  • English 2022 Averages: 22 Disposals, 10 contested possessions, 1 goal, 6 clearances, 2.2 tackles, 7 marks, 1.8 contested, 7 score involvements, 22 hitouts & 117.5 ranking points

  • Natanui 2022 Averages: 13.3 disposals, 14.3 contested possessions, 0.3 goals, 5.3 clearances, 1 tackle, 0 contested, 2 score involvements, 29.7 hitouts & 92 ranking points.

With those averages he'd be 1st at the club for ranking points, 1st for score involvements, 2nd for clearances, 3rd for contested possessions, 3rd for contested marks, 3rd for goals. Hardly a spud.

I rate him, would love him in our side, even before this season. But unfortunately for us he's picked a really good time to hit his straps $$$$. It depends on the deal, but I feel like we need to keep our first 3 picks, so we surely have to pass on him. Be nice to offload someone (Petch, Gaff, XON, Billiams) or do a pick swap, but i daresay it'll be picks or bust.

After Kelly, i don't want us overpaying for anyone. Been crippled enough by that as it is, can't afford to do it again :nogood:

Went to the Casey Demons/Williamstown game last Saturday.

WC are showing a fair bit of interest in a guy called Ben Woodfull who plays for Williamstown. Ruck/KPP.
This was the Oakley Chargers guy from memory. I thought he was a bit undersized for AFL ruck - needing to be 200 cm plus nowadays.

Anyone with Melbourne connections know more about him? Eastcoasteagle Monocle

Yeah he's from Oakleigh. Was listed as 197cm last year, but as we've seen with J Williams, Hough, HEdwards and Allen they can get taller. He's still only 19.

Hough is listed at 190CM

J.Williams listed at 198CM, but I think he has grown tbh, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s at the 200CM mark

I had two concerns with Williams predraft, lack of athleticism and height.

I always thought at 195cm, if he lacks the ability to launch and out jump his opponent, he’d struggle at afl level.

Is he worth getting? His draft profile said he wasn't very versatile and lacks an attacking element to his game. Not sure if he has worked on that since being drafted.
He has worked on his game, both score board impact and field kicking.

Trust me, there are Lions fans getting frustrated he’s not getting a run.

So does a potential 5cm growth spurt allay your fears somewhat?
Would like to see him play first before making further comments.

Athleticism isn’t everything. There’s much more that goes in to being a footballer, and fans will always know better about their own players, than opposition fans will.

How tall are Williams and Hough now?
Williams 'officially' 198cm, Hough 'officially) 190cm.

I was at the Eagles/Nth game and when Williams and Callum Jamieson (who is 200cm) were standing together posing for photos they looked pretty much the same height.

Likewise at the Eagles/Pies game Hough and Waterman (193cm) looked pretty much the same height too.

There may be a difference, but it's negligible.

Interesting. There's an article floating around somewhere where the WA talent manager (Adam Jones iirc) literally says his leap and launch/attack at the high ball is a strength.
