I do agree with you just have major concerns leading in to the draft. As the core of the midfield is strong they need a big pre season and I just wouldn’t be surprised if they went tall.

Shuey and Redden are 31. Gaff 29.

Take thosefirst two out and whats left in 1 -3 years time.

You draft 18 yr olds for the future, not next year. We have talls pretty well covered......and half backs.

Johnson lasting till our first pick would be huge. HUUUUUUGE. Just what we need

I'd take Erasmus or Goater as a consolation prize, but no part timers please. Take ya Def/Mid and FWD/MID and piss off. Pure mid only or GTFO.

Would rather trade out and drop down the order a bit for a swing at a midfielder + Van Rooyen in the early 20's than take whatever remaining part timer is around our first pick.

Plus i want Sheldrick. He's a meatball and it'll be funny to watch him. Pick 51 on Sheldrick plz.

Well you got one part of your post 100% correct. :thumbsu:

With an ageing and injury prone midfield, when would you suggest we start the restocking of midfielders to follow on from those who you have listed, if we don't start now ?

Either by age profile or ability, our list is critically short in regards to our midfield depth.

The apologists have been defending the neglect of the recruiters to be able to draft an A grade midfielder, of late, due to the fact that we haven't had a top 10 pick for years.
Well we have one now and given the midfield talent that will be available in that range, I would be pissed if we took a tall with pick # 10.

As others have said if MJ is on the board at #10 and we pass him up for a tall, then that would be nothing short of being, derelict of duty by our recruiters.

Its Erasmus or MJ with our first, 12ish. Freo wont take both. Purples should take Amiss and one of Erasmus or MJ.

I would be happy for either one who is left.

I was under the impression Erasmus was a bit of a mid/fwd utility? Could be wrong.

You are not wrong CC, he certainly played that role last season, although his role has apparently changed some what this year.

He has been used more as an inside mid this year, trouble is that very few have seen him play this role as its been mostly done at PSA level.

So the jury is out as too IF he can play that role at a higher standard.

The upside is that "IF" he can play that role at AFL, then he will be a very elite player - IMO in the Jackson Macrae quality.

This is going to be an unpopular comment, however I am really struggling to see why the eagles would pick a midfielder in this draft with there first pick.

current list of mids: yeo, gaff, Kelly, Redden, Shuey, Sheed, Nic nat, Willie for occasionally bursts.

To me the only way we take a mid at 10 is if they have a point of difference that the above do not have we need classy line breakers with speed. Which might not be available or are available later in the draft between the picks 20-40.

I feel like there is every chance we take Andrew or Amiss with 10. I personally want Erasmus however I feel a major part of this will be the status of Kennedy. And if he decides to play on
We wouldn't be drafting a midfielder for next year, we'd be drafting them for the future.
Gaff, Shuey, Redden only have a few seasons left, Gaff likely 3. So that's half of the players you listed.

We need a midfielder bad, there is no key position player in this draft we should take ahead of Johnson, Ward, Goater or Draper.

Any one have any idea how long Amiss will miss with his PCL? Going to impact where he’s taken in the draft?

With the lack of exposure for Vic kids there haven’t been many KPF spoken about. Gibcus the big Vic key position name assumed to go early but he’s a defender. All the other Vic kids identified as early picks in the open draft are mids (Sinn, Callaghan, Goater et al).

Amiss, Jack Williams and Van Rooyen (more a swingman back or fwd) all local key position prospects Freo will be into. Hopefully they take a KPF as expected and leave one of the elite mids (WA or best available) for us at our first.

JVR or Andrew, the 🇸🇩 lad, I could accept at 12.

Cockburn will get both Johnson and Amiss I reckon, which is disappointing as MJ is probably my favourite for that selection.

Interesting to see who everyone's preferred mid alternatives are if both Erasmus and Johnson are off the board at 11?

Goater I don't mind, but Vic Metro boy.

Not against the idea of trading down the draft order if we miss out on both and getting an extra pick in he 20's instead. Could maybe get Van Rooyen + a mid.
Id go erasmus.we lack outside run and our current mids dont score many goals(probably game plan?)
Johnson isnt the inside bull we need anyway
I'd be happy with either tho

Amiss worries me cause he seems more like a third tall than a genuine KPF they way he plays. That said JK as forward didn't become a complete all round forward with 2014/15 in his late 20's (however, Jk's other parts of his game was still decent at that stage).

We are drafting for the future and not now. 2 of those guys mentioned are over 30 and one will be 30 next years. The youngest of the lot will be 27. We need to draft now so we have guys in 2-4 years able to play a vital role in there when Sheed/Yeo/Kelly are on the other side of 30.

This is what scares me about our midfield. Dee's oldest mid is 27 and the Dogs oldest is 29 but a core of them are around 24-27

Except they still think they can win it next year mids develop quicker talls take years

Agree with this, Amiss IMO projects as a Jack Gunston type third tall.

The more concerning stat is the last top 10 pick we used was Gaff in 2010.

How is that concerning? Many years we didn't finish low enough to earn a top 10 pick. We won't get one this year either.

Concerning from a list build perspective but I’d rather have had the past 11 seasons we’ve had than continually finishing in the bottom third of the ladder and getting top 5 draft picks.

I would have thought macrae would be much more comparable to MJ . Tall inside mid who isn't a burst out of stoppage player . More the rolls Royce who purrs along all day picking up possessions at will and using it well

MJ would need to work on his tank to be anywhere near matching Macraes relentless all day running, even in his draft year Macrae was already a running machine., thats not what MJ is noted for.

I see MJ's playing style more similar to that of Pendelbury, as both set up plays, whereas Macrae is the running outside carry link up player.

Edited footnote: As wonderful and elite players both- The Bont and Macrae are they, owe a huge debt of gratitude to Tom Liberatore who helps makes them both look so slick and silky.

Player comparison/style from limited footage I've seen. (Players we might have a shot at drafting)
*Basically who they remind me of..Some probably miles off ;)

MJ - Mundy (esq)
JVR - Naughton (esq)
Sheldrick - Prestia (esq)
Erasmus - Fyfe (esq) (Moves like him, kicks like him. Hard to find a lot of footage)
Draper - Butters (esq)
Goater - Yeo (esq) - Not a lot of footage to work with here.

On the flip side we have elite talents at either end under 30 ( darling and gov) and 2 younger players who project as elite (Allen, Barass). Then a handful of others who are AFL standard.

Outside of rucks we are well set for talls and some of those players are young.

If we get some young a grade mid talent the rebound could happen quickly
