if a player signs a 4 year deal for 2 million @500K per year.
and it's decided to frontload first 2 years @750k and last 2 @250k.
if player askes to be traded after 2 years does he have to give club back 500k?
No, hence why clubs / supporters get upset when players do such a thing. Believe Brad Hill may have done this at Freo. But that scenario is entertaining for us.

Yep - Gary Ablett also dogged the Suns big time with this when he emotionally blackmailed them into letting him go back to Geelong (after he'd done his front loaded contract years). I lost a lot of respect for him from his conduct on the Gold Coast (it was clear it was only about money and personal glory).

Anyone else quietly hoping that, for whatever reason, Brander ends up an Eagle again next year or am I the only one?
Feel exactly the same, Kennedy is on his last legs, Allen has already had his fair share of injuries and it looks as though JD is refusing to get vaccinated. Brander has improved every year, in fact at the start of the year multiple people were singing his praises across Australia.
Seems foolish to let him go.

The only problem is Brander is not a KPP
He’s a tall outside player at best

Nope you are not the only one, I am with you on that school of thought.

I am as also indifferent to the concept of us trading for SPS, if the price is right then OK we do a late pick trade for him, if however, it came down to this - that in order to get SPS we had to trade Brander, then keeping Brander would be my preference.

Nope, I really want to retain him. I thought he had a decent year.
I'd rather keep him and see what we can make of him, and if it's a bust so be it. But it's better than trading him for nothing now.

First preference for our first pick is MJ. If MJ had Erasmus' athleticism he'd be going top 2 in the draft.

We're looking at bulding the next generation. MJ could well be the cake itself, not some side dish, condiment or icing. Will be able to build our next generation midfield around him.

If we draft Mac Andrew I will be ****ing pissed. Sure on pure talent he's number 3-5 in the draft but he's 6 preseasons away from being able to take the mantle as number 1 ruck. So people know, thats 2027. Anyone here think Nic can handle another 5 years? Didn't think so.

I've said it before but I just feel Sinn is a West Coast type pick with run, carry and kicking from defence already being identified as needing to be fixed. I wouldn't draft him inside the top 25 but I know WCE have had at least 4 conversations with Sinn and his family.

As far as im concerned there isn't a tall in this draft worth taking in the top 20 picks outside of Darcy and TBH darcy has been kept quiet by some much smaller defenders.

If we ended up with a pick around 20 and he was available i'd take JVR as a tall. Otherwise looking more likely Bazzo at 29 or 35 and im very happy.

Players i specifically want us to avoid drafting.
1. Williams
2. Andrew
3. Gibcus
4. Draper
5. Rachele
6. Wanganeen-Milera
7. Sonsie

Felt the same at the time. But wasnt his child sick at the point? I can understand the need to be with family and with covid a few years later he made the right choice.

Freo had this twice with neale and hill .

Its why they fought so hard for good draft picks

Wouldn’t be annoyed if we manage to grab Rachele, seems like an explosive player who can also play as a mid. Rotate him off the HFF with Kelly/Shuey.

he is already in Victoria so doubt he wants to come back tbh.

Given that I suspect most, if not all, of our interstate guys may have gone back home to spend time with their families that in itself doesn’t concern me

But I do concede the likelihood of him having a change of heart is slim to none. Best chance is that no clubs show any/enough interest and he decides he’s better with us as his best option

If he is anything like Pendles, that finds time and picks the right option. Then hopefully MJ slides to our first, which is a good chance right?
Before the season started he was top 5-10 and I could only dream that we could pick him up .

Between us missing finals and Johnson being played in reserves and league out of his natural position he has slid under the radar .

He is exactly what we need .

If he is available and we pass i will be pissed

We'll see Thorne. You'd think he'd be part of their starting team in 2022 then.

This board also banged on about how much of a gun Ben Johnson was, which I always found odd. "Hurn replacement" he was called and yet Hurns outlived him

Biggest concern for us is our development of these young players. Our hit rate is getting worse and worse, then is fobbed off and blamed on our draft hand.

Xavier O'Neil and West apparently getting 2 years each seems kinda desperate. That's well and truly overkill enough time for O'Neil to have come good. Meanwhile West extension is fine, but what are they basing that on? They refuse to play him in the midfield at AFL level so there's zero sample size to see if he's good enough or not. A mid playing as a flanker or a negating role, isn't worth 2 years.

Who said Johnson was a gun or a Hurn replacement?

Sounds like the sooner you take over the entire show at the Eagles the better.

Felt the same at the time. But wasnt his child sick at the point? I can understand the need to be with family and with covid a few years later he made the right choice.

From what I read, his son has a rare health condition that means he might not live very long, really unbearable for a parent but he was born after he moved back if I'm not mistaken. Gary did work extremely hard at the Sun's, no doubt, but I'm pretty sure as the other poster said he took the front loaded contract and left.

Pass. How is this going to help us win contested footy?

He has shown he can win a contested ball and push into the midfield. A knock on him is finding easy outside ball.

Lets be honest though no one we draft early is going to come in and be the answer straight away next year which is why I don’t mind this pick though I think he will be gone by our pick anyway

Improved contested ball is going to come from a fit Yeo & Shuey plus a game plan that doesn’t let the opposition win the contested ball and then relies on them turning it over.

My issue with the trade was that he nominated Geelong only. No reason he couldn't have gone to any other Vic club to ensure they got trade value.

He so threatened to retire if they didn't trade him. There was nothing stopping him from doing that if he absolutely had to.

I'm also not impressed with how he conducted himself at Gold Coast. Was the Captain but showed very poor leadership (cutting corners in preseason etc and setting bad examples for the players.

I'm also terrified that we'll go for Mac Andrew.

That wasn't the reason for the move. He wanted to move due to his sisters deteriorating mental health. GC denied the trade request and forced him to stay. She committed suicide and died of a drug overdose at the end of the next season before he got his trade to the cats.

He will think every day about the what if's and if he had been there would his sister have ended up at that point. It was all reasonably quietly swept under the rug by the AFL and media and a big deal wasn't made. He then got to Geelong for 2018.

So whilst I ****ing hate Geelong with a burning passion Gary Ablett Jnr is not only the greatest player of his generation but did everything within his power on and off the field for the Suns and they ****ed him pure and simple and his sister died and his family suffered another loss. You hold someone to a contract when severe mental health issues are on the line and stop the only person in your family who really has their shit together from moving home and being there to provide support. All for the back end of a guy who was getting well past his peak and had carried the club on his back since the beginning.

The GC suns and AFL have blood on their hands on this. I wonder how what was signed and by whom to keep a lot of this quiet but anyone hanging shit on Ablett Jnr for either his performances for GC or for wanting to go home can literally go and get ****ed.

Oh and the fact that Geelong then let Kelly be held to ransom over being traded back to WA after he specifically told clubs about his family issues and moving away from WA. I find it ****ing sickening.
