Couple of more things in relation to SPP
1) Setting aside his flaws for a moment, there can be no question he would bring a bit of campaigner to the side which we’ve sorely lacked
2) Schofield will have a strong working knowledge of SPP and we wouldn’t be entertaining the idea of trading for him without his blessing

It’s been painfully obvious for some time and a constant topic of discussion on this board that our midfield depth is threadbare to non-existent

We’ve a strong first 6 (when fit) of Shuey, Yeo, Kelly, Gaff, Redden and Sheed but with only a young crop still developing behind them - LEdwards, Trew, West and O’Neill. This is a problem when you factor in the age and/or durability issues around Shuey, Yeo and Redden.

Duggan, Brander and even Nelson at times were tried in the midfield with varying degrees of success. One of those players is leaving and the other two are better as defenders.

Even if we use our first 3 picks on mids it’ll take time for them to be able to have an impact so they’d be a longer term fix.

Adding the baked bean brothers provided we retain at least 2, and preferably all, of our first three picks is a fair short to medium term fix to our midfield depth whilst we use the draft for a longer term solution

If adding two experienced midfield coaches whilst looking to recruit youngish mids closing in on 100 games experience doesn’t indicate the club has not only recognised but is looking to rectify its biggest weakness then I don’t know what will

100% this

Brander’s manager might have messed this up. No interest elsewhere and comes crawling back for a 1 year contract on minimum wage. Will be on minimum wage by the looks of it anywhere.

Not against!

Geelong just love picking WA talent . Horrible to trade with to bring these home . I hate any picks they get just before our pick . I hope their in between pick they get for Clark is after ours. I think their draft strategy is to read our board .
Also on the point of West's development( you could add Edwards and Trew ) hindered by SPS , SPP Fruit tin brothers . West is depth , he is happy to play Wafl and be cover for injuries. Having spare midfielders, rucks , forwards and defenders is part of a team plan with not all your eggs in one basket .

It leaves them with a big, mean and ugly guy doing the heavy lifting and backing them up in close.

Also saw on the Port board SPP and misso are expecting a baby in April. That could be the best thing for him as he needed to mature.

I wouldn't mind him following Schofield. SPP is good at picking up the dirty ball and laying tackles. It is something the Eagles could use. It would have to be at the right price though.

People grow up, when was the most recent off field issue?

This season

He no showed a training session after partying the night before and was sent away from the club to work on his personal issues

SPP has way too many red flags for mine, not to mention the bad influences he has back here in WA that ATG alluded to

Yeah but we desperately need some flog about the club.

Someone who is going to down too many of Mrs Simpsons infamous Mohitos and get himself kicked out of the backyard BBQ for drunkenly challenging Sheed's defensive efforts...

SPP tackles Simmo's dog just before it wins the annual dog race on the beach....

Geelong a front runner in that race, again

In all seriousness I think it is time for teams to start throwing the baby out with the bathwater with Geelong.

They are going to have limited young talent to pick over in the coming years (not saying they won't have talent there, but with a lot of older players leaving I assume they will have cap space to pay market rates to retain them) - so around now is the last hurrah for a few years of any 'raiding' of their talent (I hate framing it that way, but it's the easiest to make this point).

If teams want an uncontracted Geelong player just walk them to the PSD. Unless it is impossible (i.e. Parfitt etc where they would get taken #1 by any club)

If Geelong want teams players make them pay up. A fair price, not a Higgins for pick 30 style trade.

Pick 8 for Clark is laughable, if not downright offensive. He's barely worth 27 - and the fact that Freo have offered that Geelong should take it and run (or if they want more maybe ask to swap future 3rd's).

Yeah but has he done anything wrong today?

There is a bit of risk/reward there at the right price though.

I may have said this last year also - but if the club went through all that it went through in 2008-2012 around cultural change and ensuring they have the structure and support in place to both work with players and also keep those players in-check then why do we continue to shy away from those with potential issues.

Obviously guys like Newman, Rioli and Ryan (I'm sure I'm missing some) have had some off-field issues in somewhat recent times - so clearly the club is set-up to work through those with players (and in the case of Liam Ryan he seems to have improved his professionalism etc).

Not an option for Freo with Clark as he’s contracted for next year.

Clark is contracted so Geelong can do what they want

Correct.

And Freo (or anyone else) have no obligation to pay the asking price.

The issue is the narrative becomes that the club chasing the player has let them and their management down. I see an easy fix - call it out in the media. 'Geelong requested pick 8 for Clark, who isn't B22 for them and has played 11 games in the past 2 years - after 18 in 2019'

27 to me still seems generous - I'm very glad we are not involved.

Simmo got flamed for it when he worded it poorly, but with the cuts in the soft cap we don't have the same support structure we have pre-COVID to deal with these problem cases.

At the right price SPP could be a bargain, but between his issues with alcohol and the negative infuences of his friends and family back in WA the juice might not be worth the squeeze here with our current support network.

I think Clark would be worth around pick 27 if he was uncontracted.
He's not being placed on the trade table unlike Brander either.
Not surprising Geelong are asking a little more, considering the price we paid for an uncontracted TK.
Wouldn't object to Freo paying for a bit more lol.

I have a love hate with this;

I hate that Geelong are being pricks as there is no way his price has gone up since being drafted, he was pick 14 and now they want 8 for him. Pick 27 is a very good pick for him, contract or not.

But I love they are doing it to Freo...

Yep understand that. Freo should just walk away from Clark to be honest. It's not their fault if they offer a fair and reasonable trade and Geelong act like children about it.

See what happened with Kelly and us (i.e. he was happy to request a trade the following year) - i.e. players know that the club chasing them has done all they can and it is the cats being unrealistic.

Here is out best 7 players who will be under 23 at the end of 2022.

I have assumed Cameron is gone - no idea when we will get clarity but not expecting him to play for us next year or to get us any draft picks in a trade.

By comparison, our 23 to 27 year old list is pretty full (17 players), but lacking in top end talent. KP stocks look fine but our midfield at that age bracket is horrible.

With our senior citizens, this is where our A graders are

I believe we need to fill our boots on this year's draft. We have so many gaps it is not funny.

So to fill our boots this draft with pretty strong WA draft pool, a decent draft hand, max out on Cat B whilst retaining all of 2022 picks could leave us with a much better list outlook. The listing below is indicative and not meant to be that we would only look at WA talent. There are more SA prospects that I feel OK with but my Vic knowledge is rather scant after the second round prospects.

Main takeaway from this for me

• Pre-season Training begins for 1-4 year players – Monday, November 22
• Pre-season Training begins for 5+ year players – Monday, December 6

Been a long time since we’ve had the playing group back training this early. Most important preseason since Simpson joined the club
