Those peanuts on the bulldogs board still think they’ve got a shot at Barrass

Due to salary cap issues

FMD the guy’s signed on until 2027, by the end of next season Mcgovern will be off the books and by the end of the following year it’ll be a mission for us to just reach the minimum salary cap requirement looking at our list.

I was 50/50 on Phillipou vs Wardlaw before Wardlaw re did his hammy, but the injury pushed me fully onto the Phillipou train as well.
Until recently, I was in favour of Wardlaw without having seen him play. I guess my opinion was based on the media hype and reporting. I took the time to watch the u18 Academy team vs Collingwood VFL team.
After watching this game, I took away the following regarding Wardlaw -

1) He did some good stuff but he certainly didn’t dominate the game like I thought he might. I was somewhat underwhelmed. Nor did Ashcroft and Sheezel play all that well either for that matter. One game is just a sample.
2) I wonder whether his size is going to be an issue at AFL level for an inside midfielder. Chris Masten comes to mind, an inside midfielder as a junior, but his game didn’t translate to AFL level because of his size. Wardlaw is bigger than Masten but he is not a tank like Neale or Shuey. I am not sure how he would go against bigger bodies as an inside mid.

Couple these observations with the ongoing hamstring issue and I am not so bullish on him. I would be leaning more to Phillipou now although I haven’t seem much of him either. Certainly has the size advantage over Wardlaw. I wouldn’t even be so opposed to splitting the pick for a good deal as I was previously. Very difficult but important decision for O’Brien and co to make.

Trade our first next year and grab him and Phillipou
Not a bad idea provided we can get a premium for our 2023 R1 pick. Three issues to likely to drive a club to trade hence providing the right trade

1. It will need a club to view us as a basket case again in 2023, hence value it as a point end pick
2. It will need a club seeing greater value in 2023 than this year
3. It will need someone like the Suns desperate to get points in 2023

If I look at next year, I am assuming a top 3 pick. What would a suitable trade look like?

1. Suns pick 5 they get for Rankin plus picks 26 and 34 meaning we easily buy the Lions R1. That would leave us 2, 5, 14, 20, 26
2. Port wanting picks for Horn Francis but it would probably look like Georgiades and a second and I doubt that will fly
3. Giants will have multiple R1 with their own and for Hopper and Taranto - may want to carry forward a pick and I would think Bruhn and 3 this year gets it done. I again doubt it as they I see both Cadman and Busslinger as prospects they would want now

Gaff is another example. He is obviously carrying an injury and having a very poor impact on games. How can you look at Winder this week and tell him based off his WAFL performance that Gaff is keeping him out of the side.
The clique assures me that Simpson will not hesitate to drop senior players though

So negative!

Nah I agree. He seems like a good state level player to me. Doesn’t look likely to ever have a big impact in the AFL

Had a great run of form just after the bye. Has dropped off of late, possibly because he’s been carrying an injury.

Yeah, I saw your proposal the other day involving Gold Coast and I think it could be a realistic possibility considering the number of academy players they’ll be matching next year. I also think Cadman could be worth doing it for. The way he consistently walks away from games with a high number of possessions is a big tick for a big forward. Covers the ground well and has a thirst for the contest.

By the time JD hangs them up he would be cherry ripe and Oscar will still be in his prime.

And even still, kicked the most goals of anyone on the team on the weekend. Still playing his part as a third tall, having to work with limited inside 50s.

Ryan Daniels seemed to suggest yesterday he was unlikely to play this weekend with a knee. He wasn't at training on Monday so maybe Hagdorn is right that he has had surgery on his knee.

So seems reasonable to assume he's been carrying this knee issue for a number of weeks now.

No chance he would be priority one. Hence the campaign to get him into AA. He is going to be a major plank of our rebuild into this decade.

It’s just hard to see him becoming anything more than a support act. He’s one of those too good for state level, not quite good enough for afl types. Does have a knack of bobbing up for a goal or two though

Size isnt really a worry in this case. Most midfielders will be 180-184 cm because the tradeoff for height and size is less agility, less breakaway speed, less endurance and so on.
Wardlaw ≠ Masten. Masten had a massive tank just not a big heart for contested ball.
The best way to describe Wardlaw (and Clark even) is violent. They'll compete hard, tackle hard and in my eyes are locks to translate that to AFL. Compared to Phillipou who does all the right things but is more the type to give super quick handballs off the deck and have a bit of spacial awareness.

Waterman is the type of guy who will absolutely thrive if he's here for our next flag push. In a gun team, he will be an aerobic third tall that gets a spud defender on him. He can then use his running to link play - getting lots of uncontested possessions in space/kicking goals out the back. The team will make him look a lot better than he is (eg Josh Jenkins).

I'd like to keep him around, but if he goes it's no big loss.

This just means instead of staggering the exit of all these seniors, you're losing all that experience at once at the end of 2023?

Only when that time comes, alarm bells will go off and they'll give someone an extra year longer than they should to avoid it.

The list turnover needs to start now and be a gradual process IMO.

Shuey isn't needed. Clark, West, XON, Culley, Midfielder draftee can all step straight into that position from next year. We lose little.

You totally ignored the point raised.

We have enough players not up to standard to cut before we start cutting out our captain and Hurn who is still playing well. If you cut those and retain players not up to AFL standard how do we improve standards? They get worse.

And we also dont know which players may be traded. / ask to be traded.

So a bit to play out before anyone can say anything with any confidence.

Waterman hinted in an interview recently that he wasn't too pleased with being thrown around too. Said his best position was full forward from memory

His Great-aunt says he wants to move east where he can drown in clunge with his brother.

Assuming we pick a midfielder with pick 2 for a minute (we better!)

I am quite happy for Shuey/Redden etc to stay on if:
1) They are made clear that said drafted midfielder gets precedence in the middle and onball for development purposes, and they themselves will be having to be played out of position on either the wing or the half forward flank
2) They are aware that they may be required to spend some time in the WAFL in order to get games into kids, in their proper positions

But I cannot for the life of me see Simpson doing that. You just know the 2023 starting midfield will be the same tired group of senior players as it has always been.

Which means by keeping these guys on, we are delaying the development of our young midfielders by at least a year, if not years

I am not saying that our older guys should be cut, but its Simpsons way to play them in the seniors no matter what, and to me that equates to some short term joy for some longer term pain

Bingo.

Some on here are desperate to draft our midfield savior with pick 2 because that is what we desperately need. Drafts dont work like that.

That player doesnt look like they exist in this draft, which is something we need to deal with best we can. Another reason not to trade our future 1st because this draft doesnt look like having a JHF super mid who is playing well against men.

This draft does have some solid options to help the rebuild so we just need to make the right choices. If we use pick 2/3 Phillipou looks to be the obvious choice at this stage.

don't understand the obsession with getting rid of everyone over 30. especially when there are calls to have the youth that would replace them delisted as well lmao. who is replacing shuey pick 2 who doesn't even exist yet? chesser who is yet to get on the park? who is hurn keeping out? witho? pick 20/26? some rookie prospect? someone like redden has been very consistent and durable. could probably go another 2 years at this rate. same with hurn.

unless we find a diamond in the draft anyone we pick up this year is most likely going to be a few years away from being a major contributor. pick the best side with any 50:50 calls falling the way of youth. you would want to hope a bunch of 18-22 year olds would be frothing at the mouth to force out broken down oldies a decade+ their senior into role player positions and then to the twos. gifting games to youth because of their age is as bad as gifting games because of credits in the bank. i want cutthroat competition for spots. learn from the best and beat them on the track.

if simmo is smart he'll be able to get the best out of both groups this way.

Good listen.

Kids very honest and I did love the sound of "The Eagles " that came out of his mouth.
I knew his day played for them, but I wasn't aware that his grandfather Peter also played over 200 games for them.

Also liked that he gave a shout out to Phoenix Foster, who is one of my favourites for a latter pick, our third rounder would be about where he comes into play, IMO , in the draft.

Port supporter but said, would be happy to go anywhere to pursue his dreams and isn't phased by going inter state.

I will be tracking his progression and development in the last part of the season for Woodville West Torrens.

He speaks well and there is an inner strength and confidence that comes through. :thumbsu:
Agree good listen and seems incredibly mature for someone turning 18 in December. All this and he has a basketball background!!!

His selection in the BB draft gives insights into how and what he watches for in games. I like his selections and what he values on the court.

So no different to Kennedy or Darling?

Hyper competitiveness in the pursuit of victory is what he appears to value the most, which is a great sign. Also B A S K E T B A L L B A C K G R O U N D.
