Culley's improvement gives me strong Clayton Oliver vibes (in as much as any player can be compared to another - and also comparing in-season improvement and opportunity to off-season improvement creating opportunity).

From what I understand he was playing 2021 out of position as a not-that-fast mid/small forward. 11-12 possessions and a goal a game. OK, but not draftable.

Worked on his speed and pace-off-the-mark over the offseason, and through better conditioning forced his way into his preferred position in the midfield (Olivers opportunity was due to players being at the carnival).

Not saying he will be that good, but that improvement trajectory just has to set off alarm bells with recruiters and hopefully ours are at least listening.

That is what I think of Jai Culley, he's a late bloomer and everything I've seen of him is he's on a linear growth trajectory.
He came late onto the scene for Dandenong Stingrays too, was plucked from club footy late to play for them.
So was never going to get midfield time last year, over mids that had been there a long time.
Covid then hit and he had to wait until this season. I'd have no quarms taking him pick 1 in MSD and he turned out to be a dud. I just think the upside could be massive.

More than 12 months from being drafted.

The only acceptable reason to delist O'Neil was his attitude. Maybehe needed a kick up the backside to get serious?

Shuey was a high draft pick though. Compared to a rookie pick (I know he was AA x2 U18, but still every other club passed multiple times).

Gov might be a better comparison, as he showed a bit but lacked professionalism.

I just think we would have inevitably have cut O'Neill so doing it earlier has probably benefited both parties.

You can only trade picks in the upcoming draft for a MSD pick.

Its a new concept and it will be interesting to see what clubs who wont use a pick be willing to trade for it. Lions may accept a 4th rounder for the points. Giants have a top 10 pick in the MSD.

And we need to open another spot. And have pick 37 no 4th.

We wont be trading 37. Unless we were confident players would also be traded out to regain picks. Too many variables.

If we are that keen open another spot and see who is left.

At the moment all our jumpers still seem to be being made by Burley Sekem and just re-badged as castore

Don’t know him from a bar of soap but Culley surely suits our required age profile (18 to 22yo) better than Florenca.

Take Florenca with our second pick by all means. But an overlooked 19 year old Vic kid who missed exposure to recruiters due to Covid seems the far more preferable option as several posters have noted.

Agree re Florenca (take him with our 2nd).

Culley wasn't good enough last year, not due to Covid as much as being mid-team on talent, so being played out of position as a forward.

Worked on his main weaknesses over summer to get midfield time, and has shown how much better he can play I his preferred position (not sure if we have heard that sort of thing before at West Coast...)

Culley is exactly the type of pick you make in the MSD. Rate of development, skills and can kick a bomb. Still young, might cost a first rounder in this draft.
