The problem is with trading Brander is at this point, we might be too invested in him. Years on the list, shown some signs, but not really established himself.

You just know he would be one of those guys that if we let go, he would probably come good.

And realistically, what would we get for him at this point? A second round draft pick at best?

We need a plan for him. For me, that would be playing him permanently as the third tall defender and having him smash the gym in the off season; I swear it's a a worry that a lot of our kids barely seem to put on any muscle after years at the club, and Brander is one of those.

At any rate, I think trying to develop him as an onballer is a futile endeavour.

The West is saying Jetta is 50/50 dependent on list sizes.
I am struggling to see whether there would be any point in Jetta taking up a list space and running around in the seconds.
It seems to me he’s either b22 or not taking up valuable list space.
He seems very much out of favour, there may be the mentoring aspect but that could possibly be done in other ways.

The cuts to the softcap mean that everyone will be going in with less support off-field next year. So if the club feels really confident in the younger group of players, there's good reason to keep Jetta in the squad as a mentor or 'playing coach' even if he's not automatically best 22.

It could help the development of the younger guys already in the squad, whilst being hand depth for a side that'll expect to be contending.

If it's a choice between that and a speculative late rookie pick, or another year of Reid or Treacy, it doesn't sound the worst.

Word was we didn't have the coin free to satisfy his worth and hence a third year was added either to back end the contract or just add more security.

Contracts don't mean a hell of a lot. If we need to we trade him out in a year or two under contract.

When was the last time we traded a player out under contract matey?

Waterman can play wing fwd or half back flank . Cole Nelson and Duggan played a bit of wing . Waterman more adaptable than Brander it seems so just put Brander where he wants next year for the whole year and Waterman as a utility .
I like the idea of Will Brodie . Is still young and a genuine inside mid . Gold Coast have a plethora of quality young mids .

Sinclair perhaps? Rosa also a possibility

Kinda different. Sinclair nominated Sydney and was all aboard the trade idea because they offered him a bigger role leading their ruck brigade.

Bit different to what old mate is suggesting, that we can just turf some spud under contract if we aren't happy with their performance.

Rosa trade to Fold Coast was HIS idea. https://www.afl.com.au/news/111791/eagle-matt-rosa-flies-north-to-join-suns-

Honestly can't remember the last time we've done that, without the player also wanting/agreeing to it.

I heard a rumour that there was a clause in his contract that triggered another year if he played 8 (or 9?) games this season which would explain why the club kept him out of games. I'd take that rumour with a tablespoon of salt though.

That sounds all good in theory, but I feel like Jetta did himself a big disservice on that front when he came back from the COVID break looking a bit worse for wear.

Leadership is about setting the tone through standards and the way you go about things on and off the field.

Because list sizes are reducing and we need to regenerate our list.

Jetta is 31 and Petruccelle 21.
I know it's not a popular opinion around these parts, but I think Petch might end up being better than most think.
The footy brains at WC HQ aren't going to give him 3 years if they haven't seen something.

There are plenty WC players that I and/or others thought were crap early in their careers but went on to be roll, good or even great players...

It's happened and all depends on the player and the situation.

New list manager, new list numbers that may fall even lower at the end of 2021 and even 2022.
Players have to agree to trades. This isn't the US.
