Yep this . Desire to chase and win the ground ball was key to us winning 2018 .
Saying that our game plan structure has us sagging a player/players off the defensive side of the stoppage meaning we are outnumbered at the fall of the ball
We do this in hope of getting the opposition to kick long over our defensive positioned mids to bring into play our intercept marking defenders .
This strategy falls apart in the wet or slippery conditions
We are also susceptible to teams who use run and carry through our defensive wall and don't kick long to a contest

Okay, let me get this clear - the game style is good except in wet or slippery conditions. Otherwise it's good - except with teams who run and carry. Otherwise it's good. Sorry but I don't like fifth spot. It might light the Cockburners' fire but it does nothing for me.

And I'm not automatically suggesting we try to out-Richmond Richmond, just saying our current style only gets us to fifth. We need to evolve.

As to Brander going to defence, seems the selectors have Rotham and Edwards ahead of him (just like Waterman and Allen are ahead in the forward line.) Nothing in particular against him, I just thinks he's surplus and we need to give something to get something.

In dry conditions the kick mark game is effective against Richmond pressure game .
You can't pressure the ball carrier if you are stuck on the mark.

We showed how effective it is in the dry vs Richmond in 2018 and the first half of our game against them in 2019 until the rain hit .

Collingwood also won the prelim against Richmond in 2018 in the dry by taking the pressure game away with marks .

We obviously have a plan B for wet conditions but it takes away our marking strength and our team is usually too tall across the ground .

Its no coincidence that in 2019 our game plan struggled when we were given many more night games instead of Sunday arvo which has been the norm .

Remember Simpson having to change things up because optus was very slippery at night in 2019 ?

Anyway I think the afl has done us a disservice this year giving us all night games in our 2nd hub when it's common knowledge it does impead our game style .

Hungry Mungry

Hungry Mungry sat at supper,
Took his knife and spoon and fork,
Ate a bowl of mushroom soup, ate a slice of roasted pork,
Ate a dozen stewed tomatoes, twenty-seven deviled eggs,
Fifteen shrimps, nine bakes potatoes,
Thirty-two fried chicken legs,
A shank of lamb, a boiled ham,
Two bowls of grits, some black-eye peas,
Four chocolate shakes, eight angel cakes,
Nine custard pies with Muenster cheese,
Ten pots of tea, and after he,
Had eaten all that he was able,
He poured some broth on the tablecloth
And ate the kitchen table. His parents said, "Oh Hungry Mungry, stop these silly jokes."
Mungry opened up his mouth, and "Gulp," he ate his folks.
And then he went and ate his house, all the bricks and wood,
And then he ate up all the people in the neighborhood.
Up came twenty angry policeman shouting, "Stop and cease."
Mungry opened his mouth and "Gulp," he ate the police.
Soldiers came with tanks and guns.
Said Mungry, "They can't harm me."
He just smiled and licked his lips and ate the U.S. Army.
The President sent all his bombers--Mungry still was calm,
Put his head back, gulped the planes, and gobbled up the bomb.
He ate his town and ate the city--ate and ate and--
And then he said, "I think I'll eat the whole United States."
And so he ate Chicago first and munched the Water Tower,
And then he chewed on Pittsburgh but he found it rather sour.
He ate New York and Tennessee, and all of Boston town,
Then drank the Mississippi River just to wash it down.
And when he'd eaten every state, each puppy, boy and girl
He wiped his mouth upon his sleeve and went to eat the world.
He ate the Egypt pyramids and every church in Rome,
And all the grass in Africa and all in ice in Nome.
He ate each hill in green Brazil and then to make things worse
He decided for dessert he'd eat the universe.
He started with the moon and stars and soon as he was done
He gulped the clouds, he sipped the wind and gobbled up the sun.
Then sitting there in the cold dark air,
He started to nibble his feet,
Then his legs, then his hips
Then his neck, then his lips
Till he sat there just gnashin' his teeth
'Cause nothin' was nothin' was
Nothin' was nothin' was
Nothin' was left to eat.
I can see a double court case here.

Hungry Jacks will be suing you for use of the term Hungry which has been synonymous with the Burger King franchise in Australia.
McDonalds will be suing for use of the capital M associated with over eating and sh1t food which they pioneered.

In terms of mids playing in the forward line, the one i like up their is Yeo. He's our best athlete and is our Martin/Danger. I reckon we should be transitioning him into a 70/30 midfield/forward split. He's 190, a bull, easily our most explosive athlete outside of Nic, he's overhead marking is Fyfe like. He would create match up problems in there.

Why not Kelly, who has actually played a fair bit up forward in the lead up to being drafted for South Freo and kicked some bags of goals?

Shuey and Kelly rotating on a flank for me.

Our end to the season showed how much we need Yeo in the guts though

Yea outside of Yeo would only be Kelly. I'm talking playing Yeo inside 50, not on the forward flank. Yeo with hes size and athleticism can be a match up problem.

He's not a great set shot for goal and doesn't have the same natural ball winning sense that danger or martin do tbh. He is however better than both athletically and tbh when he goes head to head with those sorts of guys is when he has his best games.

That's true but i'd like for him to get more run in there, which help prolong he's career. It's another dynamic we can add to our team, espeically with the talent we have in the middle. If we're on there, we can throw Yeo in the forward line.

TBH I just think if we're going to rest mids forward shuey and kelly are better options.

I think anyone tagging the Richmond game plan as "chaos ball" is underselling it.

Those handball releases out the front of the stoppage are amazing. The ability to have numbers running toward their goal and disrupt opposition possession is very effective.

They are playing the game differently to most but it is very structured.
Agreed, very consistrant well practiced patterns.

Jetta came back from the Covid break unfit. He didn't like hubbing and had a fall out with Sumo over that. His form like his attitude was not where it needed to be.

Clark is Jetta but with heart and guts He goes in hard.....too hard is how he injured his shoulder this season.

If you don't think Clark would instantly improve the balance of our best 22 and our attacking options off half back / wing well...............that's your view.

He has nowhere near the runs on the board that Jetta does. Crazy talk (he may get there one day, but is being rated well above his actual performance).

Also he reinjured his shoulder this year. Red flag much?

He averages all of 2 possessions more than Brander, and his games mostly came in the longer format (he has kicked a lot more goals though). If we want a mid/hbf to improve us get Pickett for free (upgrade on Ainsworth, goes hard, dodgy disposal).

Clark is a good player, just not worth giving Brander for him.

Our forwards structure and kick mark style are pretty good. We are effective and pretty efficient when going forward. Just need to get it forward more.

It’s our contested ball and overall pressure/team defence consistency that needs to pick up if we want to take the next step.

Also teams flood the stoppages against us and we end up getting dirty ball clearances even when we do win an around the ground stoppage. That’s my professional uneducated opinion.

Not that far away. Crazy year.

Here we go...

In other news, what's peoples thoughts on mangoes?
If Melon was Ryan Crowley then Mango is Nic Nat

If Melon was Ryan Crowley then Mango is Nic Nat
Ryan Crowley is actually a very nice guy.

Do we trade pick 1 for Adam Treloar despite the fact he's clearly following his missus to Queensland?

Discuss.
