Wayne Bennett, one of the all time great rugby league coaches ( as recently confirmed by taking 14 debutants to a series win in the State of Origin this year against raging favourites) had this exact philosophy. A player is taken for his strengths, so he works to make those strengths stronger. Good tackler? He will make you a great tackler. Fast runner? Train to get faster (or dare I say it more swerveable) etc. That's not to say work cant be done to limit deficiencies but the overall idea is to work with a players strengths to make them stronger.

It works.
That is an emerging trend in personal development. Forget your weaknesses and focus on your strengths. Collaborate with others to cover for your weaknesses.

So in the case of Ainsworth do they forget about trying to improve his skills?

People can improve both strengths and weaknesses.
AS initially stated, it does not mean you dont work on deficiencies but you focus the bulk of your training on improving strengths.
If a player has woeful skills, he usually isnt picked up in the first place and as much as BF posters deride Ainsworth's skills, from what he has shown last year, he is an effective disposer of the ball, he just ain't pretty doing it. Everyone has this set in their mind that he cant kick which is simply not the case.

He is very slow getting ball to foot, doesn't have depth in his kicking and his kicking proficiency is best described as going to an area rather than to a player directly. He also tends to get under the ball and leans back leading to slow passes that are able to easily be picked off. At this stage he's also weak overhead, doesn't jump hard at the ball and isn't great one on one.

I don't think with his kicking action he should have been drafted at all. Priddis was a superior kick of the ball as is hutchings. If Ainsworth isn't going to be a 90 kg wrecking ball in tight or put on enough muscle and strength to be an effective tagger against quality opposition then he has no place on an AFL list. The likelihood is he has 1, at best 2 years to secure himself in one of these roles or he is gone.

Just because someone is on the eagles list doesn't mean they should be pandered to. He has major weaknesses and likely ones that can't be overcome in the next couple of seasons. For that reason alone i would have delisted him.

So it's known i would have delisted foley before him.

Witherden played only 6 games in 2020. Go watch the game he got 2 Browlow votes in on his return to the side.
Tom Swift got 3 Brownlow votes at one point...

My coach told me i need to leave the thoughtful analytics to Dylan and stick with what i do best.

How about we give this overused, unfunny joke a rest?
Its right up there with posting Gee on anything to do with Venables and putting Jack Watts as a poll option as embarrassing crap just clogging up threads.

Alec waterman playing purely as a half forward is fine by me, could play the Lecca role well I think, his kicking inside 50 is awesome

When we won the flag Simmo was all about players playing in their actual position instead of the whole "flexibility" things where everyone is a midfielder except for KPP's. It worked for us then and it's something we should stick to.
