Happy and sad day yesterday. It's a mighty tough job he's got ahead of him considering he'll be the 4th senior coach the players have had in 18 months.

They only just learnt a whole new game plan and approach under Walshy, can't afford to move too drastically away otherwise their brains will be fried I think.

2016 is going to be very interesting how the playing group responds. Haven't listened to the whole presser yet but so far everything is pleasing.

At the start of the presser youtube video, did seem like a small turnout? Not a whole lot of journos or staff there for arguably the highest position in SA sport being filled.

Should be an interesting ride with Pyke. Always interesting to keep an eye out on a coach who hasn't had much media attention before.
He seems like a calm operator. But we can't judge on the one press conference. Glad we got him in before the trade period. I'm sure he'll have a big say on who he wants to come to the club, he seems to have a good understanding on the playing list already and what he'd want changed.

Glad its been announced but I have to say that I am not as enthusiastic as I was when Walshy came on board. Somehow Walshy created a sense of confidence. He was very sure of what he wanted to do and that it would be success

Sense of confidence came from the fact he was poached from the PAFC really.

Like you, Don Pyke? meh.

Why else? You know it. Gave you all great satisfaction to steal a senior assistant from us.

Anyway, 10th coach in 26 seasons, "Total football" (how original) - good luck.
You really over rate things that are important to you.

Walsh persona had nothing to do with Port Adelaide, don't be so insulting

Yeah, because port are the originals... Oh hold on afc in the afl 1st in sa, 1st sa premiership...

Port, forever in the crows wake... ;)

Wow, what unearned arrogance. Get over yourself mate.

We liked Walshy because he brought a hard edge, tactical nous and a team focus. Something this club lacked previously.

Nothing to do with him actually being a Port Adelaide coach. He coached at plenty of other clubs too:rolleyes:.

The day that I had a photo with JJ and Sauce at the Advertiser building (before the semi final), I also saw Rucci walking through. You could see the pissed-off look on his face seeing a Crows function invading his workplace.

It was probably the realisation that not only does he have no idea what is going on at the Crows, but he also has no idea what is going on 10 feet from his own desk.

To be fair i was replying to a post about 'trying something new'

Id agree that a predetermined and pre outlined plan b is essential.

Understood. I'd never suggest we simply fly blind making changes, not at all. But we cannot have a single game plan, and nothing else. That is exactly what Neil Craig did, and when we were losing, his only instruction was to "work harder". Never about game plan or major positional changes.

I think youre being a bit harsh on NC there. Things werent going great in 2011 but we seemed to bounce back alright in 2012 with a team largely of his making.

I agree that his time was up but i wouldnt go so far as to say he ruined the club.

Without getting into too much detail on Craig in this Thread (other threads discuss Neil Craig in depth), but his first two years of coaching were revolutionary. Changed the game like nothing I've ever seen. After that, everything went downhill from there. And this was mainly because of stubbornness with game plan/tactics, and also because of absurd list management.

The bolded part no longer happens at clubs these days. Coaches have input into list management for obvious reasons but clubs need list managers to protect their long term interests from the influence of coaches trying to save their careers by chasing quick fix solutions.

Good point.

long term interests

The point just above - previously the Crows have had absolutely zero understanding (or willing to take on) this concept. I only hope and pray with Fagan at the helm and 'Roo in the mix - this attitude has changed, where they realise every year you take the field is not a Grand Final year. Need to rebuild.
