Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

Brent Stanton Anyone? he's out of contract with Essendon and a Quality mid.... isn't that what we're looking for?
The problem with Stanton is he is not that damaging with his foot and I think we want a quality mid that will be delivering it well to our forward line instead of just kicking it into the forward 50 which is what I think happens far to often for us currently.

That is why we have been looking at players such as Griffen, Hurn etc who have a really good kick and would be very damaging to the opposition once we feed the ball into their hands.

Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

You are against getting Hurn, but want to target the heavily injury prone Drummond? That doesn't make sense at all.

And Drummond is also older, more injury prone and has less upside.

Hurn is a VERY VERY good player who still has some real development ahead of him.

Agree that Hurn in my opinion is a better option. Finished 2nd in West Coasts B&F in 2009 and had another good year this season. Is a South Australian, captained SA under 18's. Played in two SANFL premierships with Centrals, I think one of them with Brad Symes.

GO AND GET HIM!

Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

Love the way that Hurn plays. He'd be a terriific addition if we could get him, but I can't see that happening. Hope I'm wrong.

Jacobs is a must IMO. SA boy who's a fair way back in the line for Carlton given that he'll be behind Kreuzer, Warnock and maybe even Hampson. He showed against Sydney that he has ability and would strengthen us in ruck, and god knows we need it.

Unlike some, I'm with the club on Andrew Walker. He would add further depth to our mid-field and has reasonably good pace.

I've always liked Shane Edwards from Richmond. He's got blistering pace and would be a star mid-fielder if his kicking matched his pace. he'd be handy though.

I'm sure that there are others that the club is talking too or will talk to.

I support the theory that we don't need draft picks - we need players.

We've lost Bock and almost certainly Griffin, so that's 2 of our best 22 gone. If Knights goes as well, we'll be 3 players down.

Has to be players.
At some point in time we need to stop recruting players who are average kicks and star looking for those that are elite in that category.

Our passing to a leading player is deplorable. Walker wouldn't fix anything with his disposal but would be a handy player. Same goes for Edwards.

Players like Griffen and Hurn would be excellent for what we need. Griffen is obviously off the table so its time to throw everything at Bunga Hurn. He should be our #1 target now. The kid is an elite kick of the footy and can hit a player on the chest from 60 meters out.

Its nice to have pace and the grunt but you also need finishers. If we continue to recruit players who are not elite kicks, we will never be an efficient side.

Walker and Edwards, those guys would be nice but neither of them would address the real need that we have. A running midfielder with a great kick.

I too like Walker and believe a fresh challenge and new environment is exactly what he needs

my concern though, because of his shoulders he doesnt lay too many tackles and with Craigy's zone game plan which focuses at closing down the ball carrier, will Walker be able to execute this physical type of game plan

worth a punt at the right price

Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

But who have we had outside of Roo and Macca have we had that is as good as Pav and had to pay over the odds to keep them?

Macca and Roo were loyal, but outside of those 2, who have we had of Pav's calibre and have to pay over the odds to keep them?

Don't say D.Jarman, as he was always finishing here :thumbsu:

Well we havent really been in that position and thankfully the club has been rewarded with loyality from past champions to play on one year deals rather than seek out a better deal elsewhere and then hold the club to ransom.

It pretty is well known though that most seasons we sit far closer to the minimum cap amount than the maximum and that we have a reputation for being ultra conservative with contract offers. Carey, Tippett, Dangerfield and Hudson were offered better value deals than we offered, thankfully for us we were lucky on four of those occasions and only Hudson left us. We unfortunately will not have that sort of luck though when players will be able to freely and easily negotiate and transfer to rival clubs.

I think Hurn is really a no brainer at this stage. Great leadership skills, elite kick and someone that is versatile enough to play defence, midfield or forward.

I would love to see Bunga take the kick out and spot Knights in the centre square, who marks, plays on, steadies and bangs one from 60 meters out. Two kicks and its a goal....can't get more efficient than that :p

Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

He is also really really close mates with Bernie, VB etc etc, that group of players around his age who aren't bad looking guys. I can't see him leaving, he loves it to death here in Adelaide, and has his best mates here.
Just the fact that he is still going anywhere with his friends is a good sign, if he was planning on going back to Melbourne you'd think he would be avoiding them and all the possible awkward conversations.

If memory serves me right Burgoyne wouldn’t even answer his phone when his team mates were calling prior to his move to Hawthorn.

I totally agree with you Stiffy, but we can't get what's not there.

Griffen was the pea, but sadly no joy there.

Walker and Edwards would still be plusses to the team IMO by virtue of being quick outside players, although nowhere near being a Griffen.

We should be praying that Ablett stays with Geelong for an exorbitant figure, placing great pressure on their salary cap. If that happens we should hunt Travis Varcoe with all our might, because he ticks all the boxes as that lightning quick ouside mid with silky skills and great disposal.

Good call. I hadn't noticed how low his tackle count has been. Just 1.4 this year (not that Hurn is exactly a specialist in that area). Still very keen, I think you guys are underrating his skills.

And yes I'm a big fan of Stanton, who is apparently struggling to get $425k a year at Essedon. Not many agree with me though.

I reckon Varcoe goes missing a fair bit, although the last few weeks he's been OK. I do agree with you on the situation at Geelong though - I'd be looking Djerrkura.

Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

Good calls on Maric, Gamble and Veszpremi. I'm also not quite as against Tambling as most people but I'd like the first two 'b-grade' targets to be Walker and Sherman.

Can't tell you how happy I was when I heard Pav signed.

Just to get back on A-Grade targets for a sec, is Col Sylvia an option to throw money at? I'm not sure about his contract situation but I freakin love that bloke.
.

Sherman and Sylvia would be great. Sylvia reminds me a little of Roo without the durability.

Re: CROWS-RELATED TRADE RUMOURS - ALL trade rumours go here! (Part 2)

and that's why we will continue to lose players to the overtures of other clubs and will struggle to attract players to our club especially with free agency coming in.

If our mentality towards contracts doesnt make a drastic change between now and when free agency is upon us we will lose far more players than we will be able to attract.

I can think of Hudson, but not really anyone else that has left the club in recent times over a dispute about the length of their contract. I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Anyway, out of that list of 20, Walker and Jacobs are the two for me. We have desperate need of both sorts of players, assuming that Walker is coming to us fit, and with Walker wanting out of his club and Jacobs looking for more opportunity, we shouldn't have to pay too exorbitant a price for them.

I wasnt specifically referring to length though, I just used it as an example to highlight that whether it's dollar value or contract length that the club usually is very conservative with the contracts that it offers to players.

We just dont seem to offer that extra 10% (ie an extra year or more money) just to get the deal of the line that's what I was referring to. The fact that other clubs do this IMO is why their player retention is better than ours, we just seem way too clinical with our contracts. Free agency is going to change the landscape more than many people realise and we are going to have to learn to swim or we are going to sink badly.

I'm far from convinced that our player retention is that bad, though. Bock was an exceptional circumstance, no way we could match it with Gold Coast. An extra 10% wouldn't have made the difference, we needed an extra 50% there, simply not feasible. Before that, there's Hudson and Welsh, sure, but nobody else of consequence has asked to leave since Stenglein.

Remains to be seen what Knights does, mind you.

Hudson did not re-sign due to the fact that the Crows didn't offer him a long enough contract. The fact is that Craigy hated Hudson and Hudson hated Craig... Throw in the fact that Huddo wanted to be home he was always going to leave.

I agree with this version of events as well, but even so, it's the only time I can remember someone leaving us with a longer contract elsewhere given as a reason.

"Adelaide and Port are still sweating on decisions on the playing futures of Chris Knights and Steven Salopek, respectively.

Both are contemplating returning to Melbourne and could be offered to Carlton as trades for Jacobs."

Seems like this is gaining more and more momentum the closer we get to trade week.

Looks like Knights would be a viable trade option according to this article, as much as most on here think that is paying over the odds.

Of course it's over the odds...throw in Walker and we'll see if two 6/10 standard players equal 1 8/10 player.

Usually that trading philosophy is flawed unless the club receiving the lesser players (Adelaide) is filling a niche or believe there is much higher ceiling to be reached with development. Maybe that's the case with Jacobs but its not with Walker.

You guys would be getting an excellent player without losing much at all from your squad in terms of your list management...be a clever trade for the Blues, less so for Adelaide imo. Having said that, Jacobs would likely overtake Maric in the pecking order pretty quickly.

Hopefully we keep Knights.

I dunno, I can't see how it could have been any easier for Tippett to return to the GC, if that were his desire. Even with free agency, this was his best chance, he chose to sign with us even though the GC could offer a shit load more than we could.

You also accuse the club of being conservative regarding contracts and not going the extra 10%. But this is exactly what we did to secure Tippett, the club came out openly and said they payed a lot more for Tippett than they thought was fair value. I believe you'll find similar with Bock, unfortunately though it just wasn't enough, Bock was at the stage of his career, similar to Welsh and Hudson, where had to seriously start thinking about life after footy.

I think this belief that we're consdervative regarding contracts is a bit of a fallacy. Sure we've been reluctant to pay our stars the megabucks, but then clearly we haven't needed too. Ricciuto and McLeod never went anywhere, I'm sure if they'd requested more we would have offered. Surely its good business management, especially with a salary cap, to only pay your players as much as you have to.

The only bloke who we'd probably regret losing over this would be Hudson, but then we offered him a higher salary per year than the Bulldogs, the issue was it was a 2+1 contract, as opposed to the Bulldogs guarenteed 3 years. I really don't believe though that contract and money was Hudson's biggest issue, he didn't particularly want to be at Adelaide, the Bulldogs just provided him a means to leave.

Nope, nothing new there, the 2 or 3 quotes Capel has used in that article are quotes from about 2 weeks ago which have been trotted out a hundred times already. The rest is just fluff and speculation, with no team in the finals, the Advertiser journalists have very little to write about.

Quite frankly, I don't think we've got any idea who the club are actually targeting and we likely won't until trade week actually starts. As has been shown with Griffen and Pavlich, rumours this far out from tradeweek are player managers merely trying to sweeten the deals their players get from their respective clubs, or its the clubs throwing curved balls to distract from who they're really going after. Generally as supporters we have sfa idea what actually happens behind the scenes during trade week.

I still maintain that we may make a serious play at Jarred Brennan, although thanks to Fev dropping his pants and likely to be thrown out thus freeing up space in the Lion's Cap, this is far less likely:eek:

It could be an interesting trade week ahead, although on past performances, it wouldn't surprise if its as boring as bat shit again.
