We had 45 players this season (39 Senior Listed, 6 Rookie Listed [Wilkie, Bell, Langlands, Mayo, Alabakis, Joyce]), with Joyce and Alabakis being Cat B rookies.

Based on comings and goings over trade period:
  • Lost 8 Seniors (Hind, Phillips, Parker, Brown, Abbott, Austin, Marsh, Savage)
  • Lost 3 Cat A Rookies (Bell, Langlands, Mayo)
  • 1 retired, 1 traded, 9 delisted
Gives us 31 Senior Listed and 3 Rookie Listed
  • Gained 3 Seniors (Crouch, Higgins, McKernan)
Gives us 34 Senior Listed and 3 Rookie Listed as it currently stands.

Expect that Wilkie will be rewarded with a senior list spot

Gives us 35 Senior Listed and 2 Rookie Listed (Cat B) if that happens.

If we do not delist anyone else, we can take a maximum of 3 draftees and together with the expected Rookie upgrade we could fill out our Senior List at 38 players. We will then still be able to c omplete our list with a maximum of 6 Rookies in total (Cat A+B)

I expect we take 3 draftees and 4 rookies giving us 38 senior listed, 4 rookie listed (Cat A), 2 rookie listed (Cat B)

Updated for Savage delisting

So there is still a chance that I could be put on the rookie list after I change my first name to Jack lol.

Wasn't Joyce picked up at end of 2016. So he would have done his 3 years as a rookie and be on the senior list now?

Wilkie can go another year on the rookie list though. Would help with the salary cap, yeah?

If Wilkie is being paid the full amount, can someone explain what the benefit for the club is in keeping him on the rookie list?
$80,0000 of his salary is not included in our salary cap, the other positive would be to manage out our rookie / primary list turnover so say that we don't have to sign 4 rookie players in one draft, which would likely result in poorer talented players (same can be said for primary draft, depending on where our picks land and how many spots we have to fill)

Also agree with previous comments - Joyce was definitely on our primary list.

I have done a similar exercise multiple times in other threads similar to what Kildonan has done and reviewed our list to reconfirm my calcs.

Flexibility. AFAIK, the rules as they currently stand, the AFL doesn't care what list you're on, you can play. So what it does is it gives our recruiters more options when it comes to draft time. If the player we decide we want is available at the pick which is currently 74, but we wouldn't be confident in him sliding through to our pick 14 in the rookie draft, leaving Wilkie on the Rookie list allows us to grab him. Or it allows us to pick up a DFA before the rookie draft starts.

Is there another DFA period? I was certain that I read somewhere that there was a second one day period after the second list lodgement and prior to the draft. 3rd or 4th December maybe?

Anyone got any idea's?

We had 45 players this season (40 Senior Listed, 5 Rookie Listed [Wilkie, Bell, Langlands, Mayo, Alabakis]), with Alabakis being a Cat B rookie.

Based on comings and goings over trade period:
  • Lost 10 Seniors (Hind, Phillips, Parker, Brown, Abbott, Austin, Marsh, Savage, Clavarino, Joyce)
  • Lost 3 Cat A Rookies (Bell, Langlands, Mayo)

  • Clavarino and Joyce have been made Cat A rookies
  • Gained 4 Seniors (Crouch, Higgins, McKernan, Frawley)
Gives us 34 Senior Listed, 3 Cat A Rookie Listed, 1 Cat B Rookie Listed as it currently stands (38 contracted players).

Tidbits!

  • The club have hinted that Callum Wilkie will remain on the rookie list (https://www.saints.com.au/news/838327/backline-pair-moved-to-rookie-list)
Draft

Give us 2-4 Senior Listed players, 1-3 Cat A Rookie Listed Players, and 1 Cat B Rookie Listed player for us to draft

I highly doubt we are drafting 4 senior listed players, and don't believe we will be upgrading Wilkie (however there are pro's to doing this).

I believe there may be a trend to maximizing rookie lists (6 players) in order to have more money saved outside of the TPP ($80k each = $480k saved), given the current fiscal environment created by Covid-19.

Given this, I believe we will:
  • Draft 2 Senior Listed Players (maybe 3 at a pinch if someone we like is still available)
  • Draft 3 Cat A Rookies (maybe 2 if we pinched another, as per above)

Is there another DFA period? I was certain that I read somewhere that there was a second one day period after the second list lodgement and prior to the draft. 3rd or 4th December maybe?

So the answer to my question is - yes there is and it starts today and closes tomorrow.

Not sure if we'll be involved but I hope Sav and Matty find spots somewhere.
