News Dr Bridie O'Donnell elected to the board

Totally different situation. Coaches and players change clubs alll the time, and they get handsomely paid for it. It’s their career. They are publicly scrutinised and live or die by their performance. The same with the everyday Joe on the street. This smacks to me of a smart move by this lady to lift her career and public profile. With the way the Collingwood board operates, how will we ever know if she’s a non-performer or not?

We may not know how she performs, but at least give her a chance.

Coaches and staff of course get paid, board members don’t. But does that matter in terms of a prior affiliation? Do you think she might somehow undermine the board? I just don’t get the angst.

As for wanting to boost her career and profile - why not? She wouldn’t be the first board member, of any club, to want that.

Freo seems to cope with having our former club champion and much loved James Clement on their board. He has even been suggested on here as a possible Pies president. I know he had a previous Freo connection, and he has shifted back to his first love, without the world coming to an end.

There are all kinds of examples. It’s not that big a deal and could even finally be the start of better things at the Pies, a more balanced new direction. At least Bridie doesn’t have an Eddie connection (I hope).

Um ...

... we’ve had the most horrific run of injuries over the last decade, and now we finally have a medical doctor back on the board, our first since Dr Jack left circa 2015 ...

... and we’re a sporting club, and yet this is one of two people on the current board who have participated in professional sport at the highest level ...

... and this is the only board member we have with links into government, historically an important source of funding ...

... and yet people get their knickers in a twist about this person’s gender? Seriously WTF?!?!

Would there be any fuss if it’d been a man with these credentials? No. (Apart from the team allegiance thing)
The allegiance thing is a big one, as is the speculation that she has publicly shamed our club. I agree with the sentiment that she is well credentialed, but if she is as good as purported why isn’t she on the bulldogs board? Organisations are clambering to get gender balance.

I couldn’t give two hoots about a persons gender, race, or anything. I judge people on merit. 5-10 years ago if they appointed her I wouldn’t have even blinked, I would have known that the right decision was made and for the betterment of the club. Diversity in teams really does give you the best outcome.

In today’s age when a woman or somebody from a minority group is appointed I am sceptical, and rightly so. Today positions are gifted to people that are not necessarily best fit. Sizer fits that category too. They may be great, and the best possible candidates only time will tell. At the moment for me they are the best of the women who make up about 10% of people in the leadership pool. Sizer even less so.

I would much rather we select the best from 100% of the available pool. We already have Christine Holgate committed and very capable.

Whately on SEN at the moment 😂😂👍
Asked Korda how long ago she became a member "uhhhhh"
Was it Waislitz or another member of McGuire's ticket that the membership criteria (minimum days held) had to be stretched for?

Would you be making the same fuss if the Board stated they STRONGLY wanted a male for the role that Neil Wilson filled?
The world over would be making a fuss if the Board stated they strongly wanted a male for the role. Where have you been living this past decade?!

Can you please point out where Clement has a history of being Anti-Fremantle, and publicly hoping for them to fail? Labelling them the "dark side"? If not, then the comparison is completely irrelevant.

Do you also support the board wanting to choose members based on gender?

This. Give her a chance. She’s an elite performer and super smart. If she sits there and listens she might help make sense of some of the strange decision making that has hampered our amazing football club.

The captain gets paid handsomely to play. I’m not against Bridie, and she seems to be qualified for the job. I do find it odd that she’s not a Collingwood supporter, even a Collingwood hater although many would argue that’s one and the same thing. I do wonder at her motivation to join our board.

Like I said, there’s a lot of angst over some old tweets.

I’ve read ten times worse from supposed Pies fans on our own game day threads.

As a mod I deleted posts from Pies fans on this board which threatened violence against our players.

People post some dumb stuff on social media.

We had an ex Bulldogs coach come straight to the club. I reckon during his coaching career he might have been a just a little bit happy about beating the Pies. Maybe not on social media, but a high five in the coaches box?

Don’t recall the same level of fuss at Eade’s appointment.

Some serious overreacting going on here.

‘Purge’ the board because of this appointment? Go ahead and purge the board of the non-performers. But at least give this woman a chance to non-perform before you call for her head.
It’s not the same though, Vicky. Coaches and players are paid professionals, this is a voluntary board position and it is odd that she’s a documented Collingwood hater yet joining our board for... reasons?

I’ve commented on this above. I of course see the difference between paid football staff and voluntary board members. But I just don’t see it as such a big issue.

Not particularly thrilled that we now have a board member who as little as 5 years ago described a Collingwood win as a travesty. But if its the best appointment for the club then I can live with it. My question is when did she become a member and why?

Hopefully she's not an intellectual-yet-moron.

Reeling off your Degrees to some nuffy on twitter isn't a good start.

Seems odd but if she being appointed in a ‘business sense’ to help rectify issues and capable of the position then I’m all for it.
Weren’t there reports of Leppo being offered a board position at the Blues as well as an assistant coaching roles?
I‘d rather have a non Collingwood member on the board doing a fantastic job that a trueblood diehard Pies supporter doing a crap one that’s for sure.

I don't get the angst either. I have been aware of O'Donnell for many years through her writing then commentating about cycling. I have invariably been impressed by her. Good appointment I reckon.

Our last medico director was a bloke who barracked for Carlton for the whole of his life until his wife converted him to the Pies. That is more questionable than some ex-Queenslander kicking out a couple of random tweets!

Neil Mitchell's interview of Bridie this morning was a disgrace. He tried to catch her out but just embarrassed himself in the process. She will give no quarter!

Right... except none of those pies fans on this board are being elected to the board and becoming custodians of our club, no?

Her public profile is fine. On top of the resume she also is or at least was a semi-regular guest on The Project as either a panelist or an expert consultant on specific stories.

Bridie seems eminently well qualified to sit on a sporting club board. Not sure Christine Holgate barracked for the Pies before she was drafted to the Board. Was Sally Capp? Nobody questioned these appointments. And that's what these were; appointments. Mark Korda was quoted in The Age this morning from a Neil Mitchell interview. The quote was “…...we have got a fully elected board by the members." What should we make of that quote? A man under serious pressure? It seems so. His other statement in the same interview, suggesting Bridie O'Donnell was a Collingwood supporter seems disingenuous. There is enough evidence to suggest she has never supported the Pies.
It seems Mark Robinson's article yesterday, urging Korda to get out and talk to members has had immediate impact. We need our President to communicate and that doesn't mean taking us for mugs.

Cut Neil some slack, he was just trying to piggyback on the sort of outrage we've seen in this thread, so he was inevitably going to look a bit dim.

More concerning is your patronage of his program. I don't know why I expected better of you, Swipe, I guess it's because I'm a hopeless dreamer.

She will truly struggle to get her head around our obsession with medium one paced 80-88 cm plodders with poor disposal skills, interspersed with the occasional midget. But what I am truly hoping will mystify and activate her is our perseverance with Buckley for 10 years, along with the lesser lights who have survived due to his perceived coaching brilliance.

What, short people are shorter?

Correct. None of the fans on this board or any of the other 6 billion humans on this planet have been or are being elected to the (current) Collingwood board.

Yeah, but I doubt those you talk about have been appointed to the CFC board.

I only listened to him because someone sent me a message about the interview. Mitchell ranks ahead of Robbo on the Sideswipe Ladder of Media People to Despise.

That someone posited to me that bridie didn't know who we were playing this week and that she wanted AFL re-named to AFLM. On listening, that impression was patently wrong, but clearly the message worked for his rusted-on audience.

That alone should have immediately disqualified her from being considered, on the grounds that she displays appalling judgement.
