Could this be a change of policy? may be the Collingwood plan (Jolly and Ball) that helped land them the 2010 flag develop the kids but buy experience to cover the glaring weaknesses.
The Hawks have done much the same and their there tomorrow.
We need an open mind there is more than one way to build a premiership team.

Absolutely.

You look at what Sydney have done the last few years and you can see that.

They pick good targets, don't overpay, and importantly in most cases get players that are in that middle age bracket, so it's not necessarily choosing now at the expense of the future.

I've got no problem with the club being more active at trade time than we have in the past, particularly now that we have the cap room, so long as we pick the right targets at the right prices.

Still think that if the right offer came along for one of the Rookies then we would deal them. For instance is Simpkin of interest to the Saints? , Has Burbury done enough to get attention that we can't match. Stringer has baggage but could be a real interest to some clubs.
If we have a choice , do we keep the 21 year old player? Do we keep the player with issues?...

Stringer is a tough call.

Courts will obviously decide it partially, and after that it will depend on the call the club makes re culture etc.

I tend to think the club's priority will be to keep and upgrade Walker, and that all of the other rookies will potentially be available for the right pick or pick upgrade.

Geelong Trade week prediction

Trade 1
Cats first round compo pick and Gillies to Gold Coast

for

GC end of first round compo pick and Caddy

Effectively GC will be a bottom 3 side next year so that pick will turn into a top 5 pick which is overs for Caddy so there compo pick which will end up being about 20 odd evens up the deal. Gillies will make it at AFL level but just not at Geelong.

Trade 2

Cats end of first round compo pick from above deal to North Melbourne

for

Hamish McIntosh

When fit he is in the top 5 ruckman in the AFL worth the punt, dominant ruckman are gold in finals worth the punt.

Trade 3

Free Agent Rivers

for

Free Agent Byrnes

A rising star winner who has played in the worst side for years, maybe a change will ignite his career.

Trade 4

Simpkin and 4th round pick to Saints

for

Saints 4th round pick

Give him a chance to play with his brother and get more senior action, cats jump up a couple of places in the 4th round.

Loved watching the Swans win the premiership but thought how easily it could have been the cats again, next year will be no different and add these three players to our team along with Varcoe and Menzel and who knows how good we could be.

Correct.

However the club also really rates culture, which makes the decision about Stringer's future a really difficult one.

The club also prides itself on educating people and giving them a second chance. Hearing Balme speak after the Rendell affair at the start of the year makes one believe that Stringer will be afforded the opportunity to mend his ways and have another crack at it.

If one more person says our compo is worth anything other than what it is really worth, I am going to lose it. The comp stays in line with WHERE WE FINISH!!! arrrrghghghghghgh

Pilkos
Not sure how many times we have to go thru this .... its our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position ,our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position ,our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position , our position ............

Now that the comps value is clear

Does that cook your deals?

The compo is tied to our finishing position.

They definitely won't give us an end of first round back.

I'd say the compo for Caddy straight up is right.

We are not trading a first round pick for a 28 yo ruckman with injuries. We offer our second rounder, and if they don't like it, we walk away.

At least with free agency starting tomorrow we should have some idea where Rivers and Byrnes are going by the end of next week.

Oh it will be so sweet to end some of the speculation! Although I do love this time of year

Its like the games away from the game, fascinating to watch the theories fall to pieces, others proven correct, but most of all, the bulls*&t stops and reality comes to the fore. Bring it on, at least to stop me mindlessly coming up with trade options depending on whether we get Caddy of dont. (For what it is worth, I marginally favour getting him over Carlton getting him, and us trading our compo to GC for pick 11 they would get from the Blues. Pick 11 and 15 wont deliver instant success, but I think we can draft a few ready mades, ala Gaff, Parker etc Pick 11 especially can get us one of those you would hope!)

Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

I was wondering if George Burbury would be upgraded to the full list in 2013.

He has spent 2 years on the rookie list and could in theory have a 3rd and final year on the rookie list.

However with a few retirements and his performance for the Cats in the VFL i was curious as to how his future is viewed at the Cats.

Also I hear from reliable sources that his is by far the best shot in regards to clay shooting and all other fire arms at the club! An upbringing on the farm in Tassie gives him that "rural edge" which hopefully counts for something when list management is discussed!!!!

It would be fair to say he was behind a few others on the rookie list to be upgraded prior to the VFL finals starting. But, a very good finals series has seen his stocks rise. Whether that is enough to see him upgraded is doubtful but he would almost certainly be retained for a 3rd year if he isn't traded to an interested team at the very least.

Thanks for the reply.

Hopefully he is in the hoops next season. A worst case scenario for a player who is delisted from a strong club like Geelong who is only 21, is there is a chance at another AFL club. Fingers croseed!!!!!!
