i'm not saying individuals should not be held accountable. maybe even mm was too soft on those players.... yet it netted you a flag.

but hey, if you want to turn your club into a pow stalag, go right ahead.

You know you're last comment is not the case, your just being another Caro because you want it to be true.
North Melbourne won two flags and two years after the last, Carey gets done for darting his mate's missus. Was Pagan's acceptance of their party boy lifestyle and indiscretions responsible for the flags and for the downfall?

collingwood never treat their outbound well, even if they've given stellar service.

mick
daisy
swann
etc

by contrast, carlton largely wished russell and betts all the best.

i know it's easy to just say "culture", but it really seems appropriate here.
I wonder if Eddie Betts will be booed the next time we play Adelaide in Melbourne.

I won't be but some might.

We have an extremely young list you nuffie. What the **** is wrong with some.of you people? Are you actually ******ed? We had 10 players playing most the year under 21.
lol so does every other team in the comp, eddie personalty ringing up riewoldt & beg for him to jump ship only confirms this

But "most others" (a couple of posters), don't need to show any proof?
I'm happy for anyone to show proof as I'm not involved in your club, so I don't know the ins and outs of what goes on there. I'm relying on what others said but qualified that with "If that's true then..."

Some have showed some quotes from the media since then that indicate that Shaw & Thomas did not attend of their own volition, not because they were told to stay away. Therefore that changes things for me. I'd call that a pretty piss poor way to treat a club that has been good to you for most of your football career. Even if they're not leaving on the best of terms with some people, you can guarantee others will be feeling a bit let down by their absence.

Of course he will but that shouldn't diminish the respect for the years of service he provided the club.

Whilst not quite the same, I remember when Barry Hall left Sydney I wished Bazza well after all he was our premiership captain but the moment he pulled on a bulldogs jumper and played against Swans he was definitely enemy number 1 and I booed him relentlessly, but saying that once the match was over I also still enjoyed watching him play against every other team and the same will be for Mumford next year.

I think its time all supporters realised that with free agency what we are seeing with player movement now is very much going to become the normal rather then the exception that it was only 5-6 years ago when Judd left the Eagles for Carlton.

I wouldn't be rating your culture too highly. Your own captain was getting Bronx cheers by his own supporter base when the Bulldogs flogged Carlton recently.

Betts & Thomas isn't really a great analogy.
maybe the tippett saga has skewed your perspective.

it's not just betts and thomas. look at the bigger picture.

Don't think there was much wrong with the original plan. In fact it was an extremely good plan.

What was plainly stupid was following through on the implementation when the side was smack bang in the middle of a premiership window.

Things change. You cant plan everything two years out. Malthouse had them in real contention and wanted to stay on. It should have been delayed for the good of the club.

You mean after Buckley had turned down a role at the Roos due to the implementation of the plan? That would be a shocking way to **** over a club legend. Give him the guarantee of a role, let him turn down other roles because of it and then just tell him bad luck.

No way.

Not really.

There are a range of contrasting factors in the Betts & Thomas situations.

I doubt there would be the same level of respect shown between Betts & the Carlton supporters if a Marc Murphy or Gibbs went to an Essendon in the FA period and how they would be received. You know so it's not really advisable to argue further.

It's not about Buckley, it's about the club. Changing coaches then was not a good move, and it's shown plainly.

Eddie, Mick and Bucks are all big boys. I'm sure they could have sat down and worked it out.

that's why i told you to look at the bigger picture.

i wouldn't begrudge any player wanting to finish their career with a significantly bigger contract than carlton could offer.

betts was a favorite of mine and it's hard to see a club champ walk, but that the game of afl and you have to stay classy.

i believe we have done that.

Fair enough thanks for the clarity, I guess the point is that if Bucks was considered the right man and that MM was never going to buy in (it was evident from day 1) to the succession plan then they should have just made the tough decision then and there.

Yeah well thats a big issue. In hindsight what was the best way to go. In the 4 seasons since implementation we have a 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8th spot. If anyone had offered that in 2009 we would have grabbed it. I think MM thought he could buy in in 2009. He said as much. The success that came after changed the situation.

MM said that events leading up to his departure changed his view of humanity and he will never settle things with Eddie. We really don't know what he is alluding to but Mick beleves he was very badly treated by Collingwood it seems. Would love to know what its about. Eddie says he doesn't know what Mick is talking about.

let me fill you in. eddie sacked mick.

yes, it's really that simple.

cue... "but but but, he signed a contract".

Don't really agree. It's convenient to assume if MM was there Collingwood would have won another flag but that doesn't stand much analysis. Collingwood is following a similar path to other recent flag winners. Bar Geelong very few teams have had repeated trips to the GF year after yewar after year. Hawks, Swans and even Geelong have slipped to the lower part of the 8 or out during their time of contention. Collingwood have a good list and can bounce back. If we dont bounce back then I am happy to concede MM should have stayed but we need another season at least to judge.

I thought Buckley coached well in 2012 under difficult circumstances with injuries and the controversies between Eddie and Mick a distraction. 2013 wasn't great. Mick Malthouse had down years as a coach. They all do.

The truth is that Eddie saved Mick from the sack in 2009. Bucks had strong supporters with influence in Pert and Kelly. The board was ready to sack Mick. Without Eddie standing by his side Mick was out of a job in 2009. That's not convenient to the truth you want to believe but that's what happened. In 2009 Eddie was Micks biggest ally at Collingwood. That changed over the next few years and I would love to know all the details.
