Given that after a belated entry into their Ashes side he was their best performed batsman, and then averaged 45 in their loss in the WI I don’t see why they’d not pick him again.

He’s hit 2 hundreds and a 50 in 5 tests since his recall

Yep. He surprised on his recall but doubt this will be sustained. Has not seen a red ball in months. I just do not see him as a viable long term proposition at 5.

I wouldn’t expect it to last either as his overall sample size suggests he’s a rung or two below test class as a specialist batsman but they can’t drop him especially given how most of their top order has played recently

Mukka has just taken the reins. I expect there will be further changes down the pipe.

I also truly thought Root (relieved of captaincy) would bat at 3. But nope it looks like Pope will be at 3.

I find it interesting that a team that hasn't won in their last last 7 Tests v NZ and has won 1 of their last 17 Tests overall are starting favourites with the bookies here. By a far bit too.

Both teams look short for runs but that is most Test teams in the current era I suppose. Williamson still looks cooked with his elbow from what I saw of the IPL. Boult being unlikely to play due to playing the IPL final says a lot about where cricket is at at the moment and where it is heading.

I've got Potts as being the 11th pace bowler England has picked in the last 12 months. Robinson, Wood, Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Overton, Mahmood, Curran, Stone, Fisher and now Potts. They've played 14 tests over that time and none of them played more than 9. You'll note that that doesn't include Jofra Archer or the pace bowling all-rounder in Stokes.

For comparison you need to go back 6 years to find Australia 11th last pace bowler picked (Joe Mennie). Or 11 years for NZ who admittedly play about half the Test of England.

This wouldnt happen under the Australian set up.

But i do notice white ball format is taking more of a priority under the English and NZ system.

Hate to say it now, but money dictates this sport. (none of the players will ever say that to media though)

Well yeah. Boult's annual salary from NZ once you take in to account match fees is approx. $500k. His IPL deal is $1.4mil/season. Whereas his Australian equivalent (Mitch Starc for example) would make $1.5mil from his Aus contract alone.

They say it to keep a nation happy.

But in a world of greed, and ever so amount of cash, the sky is really the limit as to how much one earns. You do get the feeling , that if you cant cut the mustard as a test match player outside the strong powerhouse nations (eg Australia/India) that there are now strong avenues to earn an income , traveling the world and building your business/player profile. Even in Australia players like: Ben Dunk, Tim David, Chris Lynn, James Faulkner, Chris Green, Sean Abbott can make a decent living just in the short format alone. I dont think they would lose any/much sleep if they dont get picked to play what is considered Australias more recognised format.

When T20 came into the scene, I did remember fans etc thought it was little more than a hit and giggle. With all of these pop up leagues now coming, its about maximising your time and earnings. Hence, we are saying the dilute of talent in the BBL, and with a new UAE T20 league scheduled to overlap with parts of the BBL early next year in 2023, maybe more will leave to chase the lucrative dollar.

Can't wait, should be an intriguing test series like most England v New Zealand test series are, McCullum coaching England adds some more spice to it.

Nice tribute to Warne at the start of the Sky coverage, he was a big part of it.

New Zealand (Playing XI): Tom Latham, Will Young, Kane Williamson(c), Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell(w), Colin de Grandhomme, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel, Trent Boult

Tubby on the Sky coverage talking about Warnie.

Normally I'd be pissed off about the Sky coverage talking about an Australian cricketer before an England v NZ test series but Warnie is an exception.

They've named a commentary box at Lord's after Warnie.
