Walters was named in our best only 3 weeks ago vs Adelaide.
4th best on ground according to the coaches votes (21 disposals).
Last season he was our 2nd best goal kicker (behind Amiss).

The cliff comes quickly when you get older. Him being good last year is completely irrelevant to his performance this year.

The Adelaide game was clearly an anomaly. Hasn't looked even close to that level in any other game this season.

It's infuriating. And then when the game is already out of reach we decide that we actually can go forward and we kick a few quick ones. Like where tf was that earlier on when there was still a chance.

I have an issue with our whole forward line. I literally singled out Jackson, Banfield, and Walters in my post too. Not my problem you want to take it personally that I gave Sturt (also s**t) the same treatment.

Banfield shouldn’t be there.
He has his spot first 4 games and had to cover for Fredrick. Would love him to go back to doing what he did in the first 4 weeks. More freedom and power on the wing

If there was any doubt that Freddy and Switta are COMFORTABLY in our top 4 forwards, tonight put that to bed. Our best 7 forwards are marginally an AFL forwardline and it drops off extremely fast with any injuries or players missing. It's absurd particularly how bad it looks the minute Amiss isnt out there - think back to that Port preseason match

The concern with Switta is he isn't kicking many goals. What he does around the ground and with pressure is important though.

Hoping to see Simpson up there and at this point even developing Delean would be better than JOM or Walter running around.

Yeah I heard that and him talk about us not getting reward for effort. What effort? I must have had the other game on the whole time. Our skill levels were atrocious and decision making slower than usual with the ball. We looked like short people losing every matchup and trailing all night.

I don't think Banfield should be dropped. Like ffs, he kicks these shots that he would usually make and he has 4 goals today. Every single one of them was gettable.

to be honest. i've been saying for years that this is our most talented list ever. but without a forward line or dynamism in the midfield. i don't think it is.

i would do anything to have 1 gun dynamic midfielder or another good forward.

No point bemoaning certain players, the team collectively wasn’t there as we had expected.

Banfield clearly gets overwhelmed playing half forward. He excelled at wing. Let him run.

Sturt and Fredrick can play half forward. They’re better options

It seemed like we wasted a lot of energy early on in the game fighting to win the first contest and losing our head (and our skills) when West Coast put a fight for the next contest. We were pumped up for showing them our bravado, maybe thinking they would be intimidated, but they weren't.

Start of the 2nd quarter was a disgrace after going 4 goals down at the end of the 1st quarter. Just a lot of no contests, especially the long kicks in the air, along with a series of poor free kicks given away handing them easy inside 50s to build up a blowout lead.

Also don't think the coach had a clear plan of how to restructure the forward line after losing Amiss early.

Poor old Fyfey tried so hard tonight, but he hasn't played in a winning derby since Round 3, 2015.

Fyfe hasn't won a Derby since round 3 in 2015? Crazy stat if true.

I remember when Freo ended that 11 game derby streak in late 2021.

Walters , Fyfe, Mundy and taberner were still on the list. All 4 played in round 3 in 2015. That late 2021 win, only tabs and Mundy played. Walters and Fyfe didn't play due to injury

I generally like your posts but seriously why hold out on past stats. Just watch the game. This sport is too ruthless to not be viewed more dynamically and in the moment when it matters.

Walters career has been towing the line for a couple of seasons now, can't be at a detriment keeping him to do nothing just to hopefully see him have his 1 in 5 good games where he has like 3 score involvements.

He is looking much more visibly slower in 2024. When he's not playing for frees (not the ball) and flat out losing the contest, he can't even get to them to begin with.

There is no way - on effort - we should have been down 25-3 at quarter time.

We dominated the clearances and forward half play which is our game plan and couldn't put it on the scoreboard then leaked goals like a sieve going the other way. I think the lack of forward pressure without Switkowski and Frederick was pretty evident.

I imagine that's the part JL is talking about.

I think the club needs to realise that our timeline for actually contending begins next year. Even if we make finals this year.

And for us to be serious contenders next year we need development into the likes of Simpson, Delean, Stanley, Sturt, Knobel, Erasmus.

And we need to begin to imbed an alternative game plan.
