Autopsy Freo outclassed by Brisbane

Couldn't sleep last night so I put on the first half of our game. I actually quite liked what I saw in the first qtr.

It sounds weird to say, but if I couldn't see the score and wasn't being reminded of the I50 count by the commentators, I actually would have said we were playing quite well. We were taking the game on with run and dare, and cracking in to the contest hard. Brisbane were just able to crack in that much harder being an older and more experienced side.

Neither of those things (the sudden change in ball movement and the intensity at the contest) scream to me of a coach who has lost the players. Of course, losing the players and actually being a quality coach or not are two different matters, but I digress.

It was interesting to hear the commentators swing from praising the handball at all costs game to declaring it a liability as the turnovers mounted. Suggests to me that the issue was more with execution than with the plan. And to be fair, we did go overboard sometimes, but who knows how much of that is coaching overcorrection and how much is a young team still too inexperienced to pick the right moments.

Maybe I just enjoyed it because I already knew the score, had read this thread, and was expecting much worse? That might be the perfect recipe for me to get enjoyment out of games this season.

We certainly WERE outclassed

Brisbane v Fremantle

10 Lachie Neale (BL)
7 Will Ashcroft (BL)
5 Oscar McInerney (BL)
3 Brandon Starcevich (BL)
3 Dayne Zorko (BL)
2 Josh Dunkley (BL)
Was Lachie actually that good? Swear I didn't really notice the bloke.

bloke got leather poisoning….how’d you miss him?

Getting a lot of possessions doesn't mean shit. How many times have you watched a game and the disposal count comes up and someone has had a lot of it and you haven't even noticed them?

h

he had 24 contested

Exactly what I meant in my original comment about maybe they noticed him more when reviewing the game and focusing on stoppages. I mainly saw only the first-half before I went to the WAFL and I didn't notice him that much.

You'd probably notice players less when all their posessions are contesed. I remember him killing us out of the stoppages every single time.

he really went to work in the stoppages in the second half

I wonder how umps can give votes based on what they observe, while at same time officiating. Guess that's why the outcome of Brownlow is not always aligned to votes from others

Think I was too focused on how easy they were getting the clearances rather than who

Having umpired at a well lower level then the AFL- you pretty much only give votes to the player whom is right under your nose getting possesions as you are really focusing on making correct decisions.

Hence why inside mids usually get votes

Well said. I’ve gone eco after the North game and with work I’ve been having to watch games on replay.

Screw the commentators. I like how we took the game on with the chain of handballs through the corridor and we didn’t regress back to our kick/mark boundary side of play. It didn’t always work and naturally got busted on the counter but give me a 50 point loss via playing “our way” over a 20 point loss being defensive and predictable.

Agreed. I put it on last night as well and didn’t mind a lot of what I saw. Definitely saw improvement and some positive signs. MJ is a gem and will be a great size. Got so lucky there.

I think LJ will work out well too. Not all doom and gloom. Kumbaya fellas.
