Review Gather Round 2024 vs Essendon

Regardless of whether Hinkley is going to be there, having Rozee, Butters and JHF all 25 and under has you guys in a great place for the next generation. There wasn't an Essendon midfielder anywhere near their level tonight, even Merrett.
Darcy Parish would have to be the worst contract in the game right now

Not sure who Dean Bilton is but he should add Willem Drew into that mid field mix. The improvement by Butters, Rozee , Drew and now Horne- Francis over the past two seasons has been an eye opener.

Last night's performance from Horne-Francis marked his arrival as a force in the AFL. JHF displayed physical strength as well as brilliance. If he can replicate last night's performance JHF will be a super star. With the likes of Powell- Pepper and Wines also on the list we are well served in the midfield.

When SPP comes back he will hardly get a look in, so a permanent half forward position is his best and only optoin.

Finally, surely McEntee must be omitted when SPP becomes available next week.

It is funny to see some judging our KPF's generally as sub-premiership level after 4 games. All had interrupted/limited preseasons and, barring injury, should only improve as the season progresses. Fitness might be a worry but in the happy position of being able to rotate the 4 of them. 5 when Lord returns. If Hinkley is smart - LOL what am I saying.

probably need to tighten up the bottom 6 with 6 x Josh Mahoney-Bill Bellichek do you role/dependable/without setting the world on fire type players

We need more than 3 midfielders. He is good enough to win the Brownlow . Case closed
Yep I think Wines needs to be in our midfield. But play him like Collingwood play the their Brownlow Medalist Mitchell. Get him to do the grunt work for 2-3 quarters then bring a runner on eg: Sinn/Burgoyne. Also Dixon needs a rest next week.

The kind of game that makes me worried that this list can easily carry Ken through another half a dozen years. It all clicked tonight. Well except Dixon, he was noticeably awful, but it seemed he still assisted in the structure, four KPFs and a resting ruck and at no point did any of it looks too tall or slow.

It wasn't perfect, like Dixon there were other individuals down on output, but the entire team seemed to work through that pretty smoothly, led by the ridiculous midfield efforts of Rozee and JHF.

Essendon are just a nothing club, good enough to beat the bottom 4 and snag a few wins against teams around them on the ladder (8-12) but they're going nowhere fast.

I can't see Dixon seeing out the whole season. His body looks brittle and fragile.

Why the hell do we let someone who thought rozee wasn't gonna make it as a midfielder be mod
I believe he also once said he wouldn't straight swap Xavier Duursma for JHF.

That's the type of win I wish we could see almost 15 times a season every year.

69 isn't a massive margin but strangling the opposition into only giving 6 goals is a fantastic defensive effort and exactly what we need with all the KPDs we got in.

The GOOD -
  • Rozee an early AA captain contender
  • JHF with his first 30+ disposal game
  • Tall forwards all bounced back after a weak game last week, especially Finlayson, kudos to him.
  • Houston was wearing his opponent the whole night and always played in front.
  • Georgie is back!
  • 8 in a row against this mob. If we were going to have a bunny team I would have other preferences but against this mob isn't the worst deal.

The BAD -
  • Just the usual. Lachie Jones still has the worst marking ability on our entire list but at least he isn't a turnover guru to the extent of Bonner or Pittard.
  • Another average Mac & Cheese game but I thought h at least did 1 or 2 nice things I guess
  • Never let Charlie Dixon kick for goal again. Take the big marks and hand it off to the better set shots from now on please

The UGLY-
- Only our opposition. Generally thought it was going to be a close shootout. My god they are such a defensively hopeless club. Not sure what Xavier saw in them. Just an even more depressing version of modern Port. As least we've won a final and don't flex our 16 flags in dead rubber games against Carlton.

On a side note, did anyone else notice Adrian Dodoro walking around Rundle mall yesterday? I had to hold the urge not to talk sh!t so bad XD

Absolutely pummelled them, really enjoyable. Took a little while for a football game to break out but we dragged it out kicking and screaming in the end.

Rozee, O captain my captain. At half time I was wondering if one player could get all 6 Brownlow votes. But then Butters remembered he is Zak Butters and JHF decided to remind Port supporters of the magic in #18 and that he wants to be Russell Ebert. Just a phenomenal midfield performance. Drew the perfect straight man to these superfreaks.

Soldo is a machine, rucked most of the game, demolished Goldstein and Draper, hitouts to advantage, who knew how good they could be. Goes to war at ground level and that balk and goal, lol.

All 3 tall defenders worked together with precision, Esava keeps improving, BZT does a job every week. I was sad to see Duursma leave, but really liking what BZT has added.

Was surprised to see X had 26 touches, hardly noticed him. Essendon overpossess the ball something chronic and go nowhere.

DBJ has become ahandy forward, pretty reliable kick for goal too.

Mitch, welcome back, didn't realise how much we missed you. Didn't miss a beat, covered plenty of ground, some nice leads and marks and a couple of goals. Really solid game back, put a smile on everyone's faces.

Finlayson best game for the year. For a guy who just feared the goals in the first quarter, he slowly came to face his demons and 3 goals was a good return. Found plenty of the ball too. Shoutout to Coobk001 :thumbsu:

Free kicks 9-20, only one team in Adelaide gets perpetual wristies from the umps. Then again, a good ride in this game would have been a waste.

Good analysis. A couple of my thoughts.

Bergman's kicking continues to frustrate, seems to be getting worse.

A great front and centre by Burgoyne, shame it wasn't a goal. Love to see more of it.

Quieter game from Farrell in terms of incisive kicking.

Rioli - imagine if he could bring that to the G against the Magpies.

The alternative is a whole bunch of people who can't see the subtle brilliance that Jed McEntee brings to the team so can't win either way really.

Stringer (you know The Package™) playing on out of bounds then looking shocked was funny.

As an aside, watched the mini-league or whatever they call it these days at half time. The girl's game was closest to me and whoever represented Essendon had two girls who absolutely dominated. One in ruck, one at full forward. They marked, ran with the ball bouncing it, and brushed aside opposition players as if they were bugs.

Dixon gets unfairly clobbered here. Yeah he had a bad case of cement hands a few times, but did clunk some huge contested grabs around the ground. And he draws tall defenders like a magnet, giving Georgie and Finny more space to work in (Marshall too but I didn't really notice him much this week).

Could easily have had a couple of goals but looked gassed on both shots because of some hard two way running.

That was Rozee and JHF.
