Geelong are no longer a threat.

West Coast finished 4th last year with 17 wins. The addition of GWS means you will need 18 at the very least to finish top 4. Geelong having lost 4 already would have to win 14 from 14. This will not happen, they will not finish top 4 and therefore will not win the premiership this year.

It is still possible to win from outside the top 4 you know.

The dynasty is over, Geelong no longer have experienced players in virtually every position and are being forced to play kids who will inevitably turn it over at under pressure at critical times in big games.

They're still a very classy, well-rounded side but I can't see them making the top 4 and they simply aren't good enough to win it from 5-8 because frankly in a year this even I don't think any side is.
There's every chance they will trouble some teams in September but with such an old squad its very, very hard to see them winning the 4 games in a row (all against very good teams) necessary to walk away with the flag.

They had a great run at the top but this year its finally come to an end.

Totally disagree with you , its round 8 , long long way to go.

Precisely. This year they've looked very ordinary even in most of the games they've won.

They looked ordinary this time last year.

They were 8-0 but had 3 or 4 lucky as shit close wins despite not really playing well, then they picked it up in the second half of the year.

This year the lucky close wins became losses and they end up at 4-4.

I don't think they will win enough games to make top 4 or win the flag but you certainly can't write them off.

Maybe, but Geelong's aura of invincibility is gone and that's a fact.

Historically ~14 wins is enough to make the top 4. Not 18.
This year will be no different, being an even year with no real stand out sides.

18 wins will most likely be enough to take top position this year.

Exactly we beat the pies by 3 points, Carlton by 2 points & the saints by 1 point.
This season we lost to freo by 3 points and 2 kicks to the pies and roos.

Unfortunately things haven't fallen our side of the ledger this year. Anyone who says they'd love to play Geelong in the finals is a ****ing idiot.

But why cant they ? if they run into some good form come september and are 5th or 6th and injury free etc ? They still get a home final here in the first week, then dependant on ladder positions and who gets where, they may end up playing another melbourne team in the 2nd week etc.

I think so far if theres going to be a year a team wins the flag from outside the top 4 this could be it due to the eveness of the comp .

very few teams have an 'aura of invincibility'...

it isnt needed to win a flag. on that basis, no team this year can win it. i struggle to see what relevance not being perceived as invincible has.

they arent the dominant force they once were, but they are playing a lot of kids, they are down on form, and who knows where the year will go?

if geelong dont make the finals, so what?

they have to miss them eventually.

i get the feeling you have had this thread typed and saved on your desktop for a couple of years now...

We beat your team

Just.

The reality is, you haven't had a convincing/solid win against quality opposition all year.

Tonight's match was nothing but a glorified cripple fight amongst two no-longer-a-threat sides.

Of course, that won't be obvious until the entire season plays out because both sides, particularly Collingwood, are still being judged on last year's form.

Truth hurts.

Gosh you win a few games and all of a sudden lippy essendon supporters are coming out of the woodwork. Essendon are never a threat would be a more accurate thread title.

remember when tim lane said that when they were getting beaten by the dogs in the first quarter of a match in 2010? they went on to win by 101.

essendon must be p bad if they couldn't beat no-longer-a-threat collingwood.

same with premiership favorites hawthorn v no-longer-a-threat geelong.

My post had nothing to do with Essendon. Where have I brought Essendon into the discussion or called them a threat?

Red Herring

Definition:
An observation that draws attention away from the central issue in an argument or discussion; an informal logical fallacy.

Example:
"A red herring is a detail or remark inserted into a discussion, either intentionally or unintentionally, that sidetracks the discussion. The red herring is invariably irrelevant and is often emotionally charged. The participants in the discussion go after the red herring and forget what they were initially talking about; in fact, they may never get back to their original topic."
(Robert J. Gula, Nonsense: Red Herrings, Straw Men and Sacred Cows: How We Abuse Logic in Our Everyday Language. Axios, 2007)

More of a hopeful startement than a determined one. Geelong are dangerous. They have lost some awesome players and have gone years without a good draft pick yet their youngsters are far from bottom of the barrel. These kids are learning footy from the best in the business and the team as a whole is still a premiership threat. Geelong have been too good for too long to suddenly drop from first to tenth or whatever. If they make the eight (and they will) they will give other teams an almighty headache because there simply isn't another team in the league with their ability and hunger. Discredit them at your peril.... They still have what it takes.

Hawks fans wish....the one team Hawthrown would hate to play in a prelim- Geelong!

This. I'm man enough to admit that Geelong will continue to worry me until we either a) beat them or b) they are mathematically unable to make the 8. They are the one team I am worried about come finals. Neither West Coast nor Sydney at their respective home grounds worry me anywhere near the same amount.

HA turn it up! I'm not burying the lead. Every time there's a thread bashing Geelong you're always onboard. You are an Essendon supporter this whether you like it or not makes it about Essendon.

Essendon supporters want to think that getting Mark Thompson will guarantee them a flag. And that any achievements garnered by Geelong during or after this this time were a direct result of his influence. And by extension this will mean Essendon has to win a flag. You had a small victory in that you tapped our coach up whilst he was leading us in a finals campaign. Perhaps you are suffering from the Melbourne, Richmond syndrome. Like to think you are relevant but until this translates to firm influence on the comp you will remain relatively insecure striking out at smaller clubs that have had recent success you can only dream of.

Sure you've won 16 flags but to quote one of the great world philosophers.

Premature call Bosk.

Geelong are definitely still a threat, they aren't playing at their best and were missing a few players but still went close to beating Collingwood and probably should have won it. They also beat Hawthorn.

Geelong will still be a major threat in finals if they make it, even if they aren't top 4.

We honestly seemed to be missing just a little bit tonight - the intensity, the contest and the hunger were all there, but the polish and the class was just a little bit down. Enough that a dominant second half saw very few goals kicked and lots of behinds and turnovers, but not enough to write our season off. If we can rediscover that polish, we can still be a threat. Maybe not a serious, bona fide contender, but a threat.

Bosk has been posting the same threads on Bay 13 every week and he's been waiting for a safe time to try it on the MB clearly.

We have to lift but a game we could have and should have won just went begging. And yet I fail to see how a loss like that makes us no longer a threat when Hawthorn, the premiership favourites, have been losing games in a similar manner.

Stephenson, Bartel & Stokes were fantastic ins and if we can get Scarlett back next week and Varcoe and Wojcinski not long after we can improve that little bit we need to turn a bunch of close losses into close wins.
