Stewart absolutely deserves his impending suspension, make no question about that. However, it's frustrating to know that coverage of that story will almost certainly equal or possibly even dwarf the coverage of the game itself. This match was easily game of the year. That should be the focus. The whole reason we follow this sport is for games like today. Atmospheres as pulsating as today's only occur a few times a year, so you'd think that would merit more attention than anything else. Unfortunately though, you know it won't, since the media prefers negative stories and scandals to anything else. They'll put more energy in to discussing a negative story about a poor action by an individual - a story that's not actually that interesting really, since everyone already agrees the action was extremely poor and deserving of a decent-length ban, so the only debate is how long to ban him for - rather than devoting time to analysing literally the best game of the calendar year.

Bit of a tangent, but on a (just-barely) related note: I do think one of the biggest failures of sports media in general is that disproportionate attention is given to stories that aren't related to the playing of the sport itself. It's actually the biggest reason (among many other reasons) I'm against a mid-season trade period. If you put it in place you'd end up with an Australian version of the January transfer window in European soccer, wherein fans spend more time talking about transfers than they do talking about the actual games. Soccer websites have analytics that tell them that the stories that get the most clicks by far are the ones related to transfers. But having fan attention directed that way isn't a good thing and it's not what I want for our the AFL!!! As soon as the season starts, the media talking points should be overwhelmingly about the games themselves.

Writing the same article for three months about a player leaving a club is easier than writing about the modern sterile atmosphere at the ground, for one thing you'd actually have to turn up, no need to separate yourselves from a 14 year old running a rumour mill twitter account, as you're a professional modern day sports journalist.

Easier to write about a players off-field indiscretions than to piss-off the sponsors by writing out the sports incestuous relationship of the competition with the gambling industry, I wonder how many cases of domestic violence occurred due to Henry's last minute goal.

Any moron can yell out Oh boy Wow Wee and Menengola or criticise every umpiring decision, rage counts as engagement right, I'm sure it doesn't filter down to the kid umpiring the local matches.

Providing a proper tactical breakdown to tactically illiterate population or actual analysis of player performance takes time, resources and actual knowledge of the game and of course the ability to actually write or present.

If you create a fence around the data and footage
Then you have no competition and can put out absolute garbage, the fans will consume any slop you throw their way

Kolo or O’Connor go out you reckon? Both struggled. Can see arguments for either.

I missed the 4Q. Had to make an hour drive and back with the trouble and strife. For some miraculous reason I managed to get the AFL radio thingy to work so I listened in heavy traffic. Now English is my wife's third language. She kept getting startled by the radio call, "Why are they so excited?" "Why is that guy screaming?" You get one guess which station. :grinv1:

Anyway amazing finish, can't wait to watch the quarter replay.

Now I read about what an incredible mark that was by Henry. Good yes, but he's been doing that since day one, really. What I found massively impressive was his slotting that pressure filled kick. That close and on a slight angle. Too easy to muff it, and he didn't. That was great.

Just got home from the game... took my 6 year old son to his 1st Cats game... And what a game ❤
I gave it to this lady next to me... each time Richmond got a goal she carried on like it was the final siren... I was so cool and calm during the whole game...
Enter Geelong last 10 minutes... ead you Richmond scum

Stewart will get 3.. Head high bumps happen every month and usually get 1-2 weeks.. Because Prestia won't play next week then impact will come into it. Marlon Pickett has been rubbed out for doing worse (jumping elbow out) - he's only lucky because he is weak the impact wasn't as big as Stewarts.

Is Prestia a bit soft? I'm not saying Stewart missed him but jebus he went down like a bag of s**t.
it looked like point of shoulder to point of chin, otherwise known as the button in boxing circles
you could tell by DP's body language he was short-circuited on the way down

don't know about longer term effects, he did walk off the field so hopefully will be okay soon
