When I say that subjective comments on players speeds are meaningless I don't mean with exceptions/when I use it/whatever. I mean it's a worthless topic used as a crutch to cover a lack of actual thought or analysis.
I will give you an assessment. He can't kick, can't mark and he pulled out of a contest in the last quarter in our forward line that turned the tide and set the doggies going.

Yep tried hard ..like against Port. ..but has to work on his setshot and a few other things. Terrific ? Not for mine.. few were. Of course he is a 1st year player.. mistake are expected... not his fault we played like that.

That is the bit that hurts
No effort
It almost felt like we had a bet against ourselves winning tonight
I cannot stomach players not working their butts off when we are down. Not the players we need in there
I'd give a few lessons next week. Particularly Guthrie, Miers and Ablett rested
We need to bring Buzza in if Ratagolea is not fit. He has earned a game
Bring in Constable and Parfitt also
Stop tolerating mediocrity from any players. We have the depth to cover it

They had +18% more inside 50s and tackles, plus they had a heap more free kicks suggesting they went for the ball first. I give them the nod today.
Agree it wasn't the best footy to watch, but most games have become like this as player fitness has increased to levels where its just congested footy most of the time. Bring back footy of the 1980s I say, lol.
The free kick count isn't an indication of who got to the ball first - when we got our hands on it first it would be a free kick for holding the ball or some other crap like a throw, Dogs get to it first & unless the umpires had no choice there was minimal frees against the Dogs for holding the ball or throws.

It seemed that every time there was a 50/50 call or even when there didn't need to be a call made, that it was too the advantage of the Dogs

There are no excuses for an effort like that...missed targets by hand and foot consistently all night...and a number of passengers...

Put a line through it and look to next week...

But the club needs to focus on the passengers...... They simply can't be afforded

2 losses from the past 3 games post-bye has seen the clouds gathering over distant blue-sky optimism; we are far from the form team in the comp right now.

The Bulldogs clearly match up well with us; their midfield light years ahead of ours when they're on song; deeper and more talented. Bontempelli, McCrae and Lachie Hunter are as holy a trinity as any going in the comp. They have plenty of support.

Aaron Naughton is an unlikely looking key forward, but perhaps more apt for the modern game than first meets the eye.
He's played some eye-catching footy at times this year and was a dynamic focal point for them tonight - Taylor, Henry and co. might have dragged down their share of intercept and contested marks, but the fact is none of our highly-rated defenders were able to lock down on Naughton; he went from a nuisance to a major problem.

I thought we looked a bit directionless at times; like a clockwork team that knows its game plan too well - thank god for Jordan Clark's flights of fancy to break things up on occasion... we positioned well to intercept errant kicks, chipped the ball around, ran to make good position, but there was little synchronicity or creativity.

Does Chris Scott throw the baby out with the bath water?
Does he ever?

2 losses from 3 games gives supporters cause to look at things a little less rosily.
Luke Dalhaus is hard as nails and gets in low, but when was the last time he kicked a goal? Or kicked a football further than 34 meters?

Tom Atkins works his arse off, but as a forward has only added two goals in 14 games - as a mid/forward he's averaging around 11 disposals a game post-bye.
It's a tough role, that's why Gryan Miers joy this year has surprised me so much. Speaking of whom, you could tell he was going to have an off night as soon as he was shown to be in two minds with a clear shot on goal in the first quarter.

Gary Rohan: his arc this season is heading for the kind of September denouement only a skilled horror fictionalist could devise.

I've been a reasonably big advocate of Mark O'Connor's but he was terrible tonight, carelessly turning it over by foot twice in a quarter.

Rhys Stanley was imposing at times late in the game, but he took far too long to realise his clear physical advantage over the raw-but-promising English. Stanley was good, but he could have been the match-winner, particularly if he'd committed more earlier.

This team ultimately lives or dies by the contributions of its big core performers though; Patrick Dangerfield, Tim Kelly, Tom Stewart and then, usually, Mitch Duncan and Tom Hawkins. All had typical patches of influence, but none could sustain a high level of performance except for maybe Stewart, who's only real blemishes were a couple of stilted forays into the forward 50.

Dangerfield's marking early on was a treat to watch, but he faded from the game. Kelly's game was similar, his 1st half had moments of brilliance but in the 2nd half he looked rushed and hurried at all times. Duncan's game was all over the place; he had a good block of form there for a while, but he is one who has definitely reverted to the mean in recent weeks.

We need more consistently midfield support for Dangerfield and Kelly. Mitch Duncan is only ever a partial answer here.
Cam Guthrie has certainly shown a willingness to take the hits and wear tackles, but his game has narrowed too much to be particularly influential, especially at stoppages. Ultimately his best footy is probably way further 'outside' than the role he is being asked to play.

We do have some depth players who we can turn to in order to freshen things up, and it may be overdue.

They say bad kicking is bad football. Cats could have demoralised them in the first 10 minutes. But no, missing what would normally be certs let them think they were in the game, and from there they just worked harder.
Some generous HTB decisions tonight, which shifted the momentum a bit.
Kelly on fire early, then vanished.
Cats reading their own press again?

Maybe i can borrow your rose coloured glasses ;)

I'll back you up, Grimoz. To me it looked like Gary's hands were separated and he lofted the ball slightly and then hit it with the same hand. I can understand fans getting annoyed because it was called at a bad time and we got the worse end of the stick with decisions for most of the game but that call was one I could defend, from the ump's POV. Now the free against Stanley in the Dogs' F50 or the HTB against Sel against the boundary - THEY were genuinely appalling decisions.

There's nothing wrong strategically with having a bias towards going around the boundary. It's served us well this year.

However, we took it to absurd levels tonight. The predictability was mind-numbing. Must have been 95% of our attacks!

Constable has not played the last two VFL games

Thought that v Port but little bit more to this, 2 losses in 3. Midfield getting absolutely smashed. Side is out of balance at the moment, need some more ball winners in side. It is being left to too few in midfield.

Menegola, Parfitt and one of Scott Selwood or Constable for Fog, Atkins and O’Connor, things looks a bit better.

If i see Scott Selwood come in we are stuffed. He's a liability in modern footy with a capital L. If O'Conner goes before Bews we have also learnt nothing. I novel idea might be to keep the same structure that was winning us games. 2 Actual Key fwds, Selwood on a wing, Blitz as the anchor, Danger on the ball. Parfitt and Menegola as HHF's. I didn't think Atkins was the issue tonight. He did a good job keeping Wood occupied and JJ at times.

Because we played s**t.

We look tired.

I honestly have a suspicion we are going through a large training load at present. It would explain the fading off and the lack of intensity

We looked tired as we were busy chasing tail all night as the Dogs spread better than what we did.

Fact is that if we can't work out a way to win our fair share of centre clearances and clearances in general then we are rooted come finals time. We were smashed in contested footy for most of the night, particularly in the second half. We just don't seem to have over the last 7 years worked out a method to win contested footy.

You’re being ridiculous to think you have greater insight.

Do not dare blame the forwards. We never bothered to move the ball quickly to them. Defenders kept stat padding and chip kicking it to each other and then eventually bombed it to a pack on the wing. Gave them no chance. It was pathetic the way the defense used the ball tonight.
44 inside 50's tonight. 20 shots. 44 inside 50's v Port 16 shots.

Not exactly the issue. Sometimes it is as easy a 1+1=2

Midfield need to lift massively
