There is a three pointers to eliminating Carltons whole game. Number one is eliminating Bryce Gibbs. He is the heart of that midfield when he isn't shining, Carlton will not win, simple as that. Solution - Scott Selwood should be the one to tag him out of the game.
Scooter to Gibbs, Joel to Murphy, Danger to Simpson, Duncan to Cunningham, Thurlow to Fisher, Guthrie to SPS to start with we will see how we go during the game.

Number two is elimintaing their run off half back. Docherty and Plowman love to drift in to help out their midfield. Putting a stop to this is essential, both have penetrating Kicks inside 50 and both can drift up the pitch creating problems for our HFF. Solution - Murdoch should be the one to tag Docherty out of the game, it's the simple things that Murds seems to understand best. If Docherty is down on confidence then Plowman will be too raw and not good enough to step up.

Number three is stopping their intercept players. When we kick the ball inside 50 it has to be either penetrated deep or to a lead. Carlton have Weitering and Marchbank both with very good hands, Jones is a crock of Shit. It is essential we don't ram the ball inside 50 like an amateur u12 side. Assess the options and kick to one on ones, Buzza, Hawk and Taylor will most likely win in those situations.

If we eliminate one maybe two of the pointers than we will slap the crap out of them. Eliminate all three and we will have a party out there. But if we let them off like it's Dennis Allens bail sentence, then we could very well be in danger of slipping to the Blues.

Another player to keep an eye on is Kade Simpson. Bloke is one of the most underrated players in the competition. Would like to see someone play a defensive forward role on him.

I know Steve Motlop has been frustrating and disappointing but thought during last week's game that he has to be injured. I can't remember the last time I saw him kick more than 30 metres and he has lost that explosive pace that he had. I wondered if that knee problem he had a few years ago has become chronic or if it is a groin injury.
I remember I was disappointed with Mitch Duncan last year and it turned out he carried a groin injury most of the year.

I feel we are one to tall down back if Harry is going to play his best position or will he line up as named at chf
The way that the team has been selected I'd say he's a certainty to play forward.

No Menzel, no Black, no Stanley and Buzza spending some time in the ruck. Yep, we'll need him forward and IMO if we're to go on and win a Premiership that's where we'll need him playing most of his footy from here on out.

Hawkins needs help and Taylor is our best chance at providing that IMO.

True, I did hear him say that.
But why does he mention that they want to manage him and get him right by the end of the season?
Sounds as if he has a lingering .. something.
I reckon depression. Obviously something is up and I don't think it's physical. You don't go from how he was 13-15 to how he's been the last two years without something wrong and it seems to have progressively got worse.

Reckon you're around the mark. So I'm certain all of the "THANK GOD HE'S FINALLY BEEN DROPPED" comments are welcome.

Whatever the issue is - and I've wondered too - I don't think Motlop will ever get back that burst of speed that he regularly showed circa 2013.
His inability to break away means he doesn't have the time and space to be as creative as he once was, either. His goal-kicking average is a bit down this year also.
I think he's a bit unfairly maligned in some regards; people hate his little stop-and-prop kicks, but I for one think he generally does well to find a target by foot in transition, it's a strength of his these days.

Overall his career form peaked in 2013, dropped off and has plateaued* at a pretty mediocre level for a player in his role. He's adequate and still best 22 for mine, but he will no doubt continue to frustrate the majority for the remainder of his time at Geelong.
I don't mind Motlop; I know a bloke that recorded him at his studio and speaks very highly of him, and he seems a likable guy. On field he will always have his deficiencies, some of which are the kind that a lot of footy fans can't abide; e.g. pulling out of contests. The defensive side of his game leaves a lot to be desired too; he'll chase, but he's not the type to lay a big tackle or box an opponent in by playing the angles cleverly.

I think he runs as hard (if not particularly fast) as most, is solid by foot, a good shot on goal and generally reasonably good in transition.
If he went at the end of the year I could easily live with it, because I don't think we'll see much improvement from him going forward. Unless maybe he went forward.

* it took me 4 attempts to correctly spell 'plateaued'.

Can see where they're coming from though. Is sad and unfortunate for him but rolling him out each week wasn't doing him or especially the team any good. In fact everything for everyone was just getting progressively worse with media spotlight starting to really come on him.

I'm sad for Steve but happy for the team and his replacement.

They are but for better or worse is time to shake things up. Even if this year is beyond us we will be better for it.
Sitting second on the ladder I'm not sure it is that time. But time is certainly going to tell.

THAT frustrates me more than Motlop ever did. Not sure why he's not played in the forward line. He's a freakish kick with pretty reasonable goal sense. It's crazy we don't give him a run - especially with a lack of small forward options. He's only got 5cm on Lincoln McCarthy.

Agreed but why. 5 changes means this has disaster game written all over it. Stanley's now done for the yr. I would have backing him in for the next fortnight. Confidence is now shot. You can't bring him back in the last month and hope for a miracle. With Blitz done I just don't understand.

Menz is now getting rested each fortnight. His form is a mile off and I don't understand how when you have no small fwds that you have the luxury of resting two in one game

Asking Cocky to play a full game of senior AFL after not doing so for almost 12 weeks also smacks of desperation

Very excited about this game now
This is surely one of the quickest lineups we have put on the park this season
Love the reduction in talls and the better balance - expecting to see us take the game on which is how the game should be played
Go you good things

On Menz..He looked like he was playing sore last week (maybe an excuse for his poor game) but just before qtr time I noticed he was really struggling to move
He received a corkie in the hip. I'd say that's why he's not playing this week. Add that to the fact that we've got a 6 day break (our last for the season) heading into the Sydney game and I'd say that the MC saw this as a good opportunity to give him another rest before the run home against tougher opposition when we'll be needing him out there.

Because Menzel isn't a small forward. His knees don't allow him to act like a small forward. He can't turn. For mine, Dan is a tall forward. He plays that way by leaping at everything. Taylor forward as much as I hate it is because Menzel is out and Buzza will play part time ruck.

I think CS has made a massive mistake in underestimating Carlton and making 5 changes but I feel that most were needed/overdue.

These are really changes throwing caution to the wind. This is a pivotal point in the season.

Maybe although i doubt we will line up this way in a final.

Really buzza is just a placeholder unti blicavs is back near finals (we need any half decent option to do the donkey ruck work for when stanley needs a break). Its been pretty clear they rate cockatoo as best 22 and menzel will have to keep being managed to get through finals.

Motlop will be back i think given scott's comments today.

Parsons will probably hold his spot from here on out given i dont think mccarthy will play this year.

About the only thing this week really tells us is the coaches don't rate stanley a lot but i suspected this to be the case ever since we had taylor playing forward in the nab challenge and stanley in the vfl in the early part of the year.

The bigger issue than the personnel is defensive intent the weeks we have excelled it we look like we can beat anyone and when it slackens off we look very average. Need to see our best of it this week.

Good luck with that.
I think I know how they'll go and you won't be pleased. Me, well I don't share the same levels of fear as others over it.

Hope i am wrong on this. Doubt i will be.

But we will see.

I doubt he's underestimating Carlton per se, but with 5 games to go its time to settle the team. We've hopefully gotten over these nagging soft-tissue injuries to Parfitt, Cocky and S. Selwood, all of whom I believe are critical Best 22 players...yes, even Parfitt!
Bite the bullet now against a team we SHOULD beat with the talent we still have and get multiple games into the team we expect to have during September.

I wouldn't say that rewatch the end of the last years Prelims when he tried to score two goals from shitty positions which meant twice giving the ball back to the Hawks.

Stanley and Motlop HAD to go, form was awful, Blitz is injured, Menzel needs a break every few weeks plus form has been off and Guthrie tried hard but just needs time in the VFL to build himself up before becoming a regular in the team in 2-3 years time.

Nakia will immediately offer something massive for us in the forward 50 that we have been lacking lately, just hopefully he doesn't get injured. Buzza is harder at the ball in the games he has played this year than Stanley has been all season.

You'd think if he was injured they would come out and admit it, though, since he's been getting crucified in the media the past couple of weeks.
