I always kind of find these conversations to be a bit weird. If you had the flexibility around contracts that AFL players have, you would probably take advantage of it; ergo, why are people getting annoyed with another person making a decision they themselves in the same situation might also make?

I think AFL salaries and the life playing a sport we love make people see green sometimes.
Interesting you think there is flexibility around AFL contracts, i would think the opposite would be true.

How so?

When I say flexibility, I'm not talking about the legalities; Aust. contract law is pretty strong. But the AFL is a separate thing in a pretty big way, and you cannot compel service. AFL players, essentially, can make their contracts hold as much or as little water as they choose. I don't have to go through the entire rigamarole of naming the players who've left their clubs despite a contract being in place; both the player and the club have chosen to move players on or to leave when it suits them.

I think there's more than a few on here who'd love to play AFL, and this sort of shit brings out a bit of envy.

True, but family members and siblings have accidents and die from tragic illnesses every day. Any professional footballer would have to factor this into the equation. Blaming the missus...which is what he is doing is weak. Every footballer could cite Covid for wanting to return to their home State.
blaming the missus...........it's like a construction site toolbox meeting here most days..........

Adam Cerra is returning home to Victoria because he and his partner have not seen their parents and extended families in nigh on 2 years.

Do you honestly think it's fair on some players to be deprived from seeing their folks for such a long time (for example) ?

They are human beings first and foremost, and it's been well documented the last 2 seasons have taken a massive psychological and emotional toll on many players and coaches from all clubs.

Some fans and people (not talking about you btw) seem to think that clubs own players...

I think some common sense empathy and understanding is required, instead of the usual and imo lazy blame the wives/partners scapegoating.

Lachie and Julie Neale have been struggling with this decision for 6 weeks apparently, and maybe they should have told the Lions, but I can understand why they didn't.

The pressure and public scrutiny is enormous and does take a toll.

But on a side note as a Director of a domestic building company. The most difficult part was to bring many of our trades particularly some of older in in line with the concept of equality and race free work place. The younger ones coming though are more socially aware now, but they have their own problems in regards to Punctuality, Drug culture and work ethic. Tool box meetings have different themes now.

Am I wrong/heartless for thinking that if the Dees make the Grand Final, under no circumstances should they play Nathan Jones (not even as medical sub)

Look I know he is a heart and soul champion of that footy club, but is clearly cooked (and has been for more than 18 months now)

For a team that has not won a premiership in almost 60 years, they simply cannot afford to let their heart and sentiment overrule their common sense judgment and not play their best available 22, especially against likely a fast and explosive team like Port Adelaide, who would exploit Jones' slowness.

A certain amount of pragmatic thinking is required by Goodwin and the Dees MC if hopefully they can beat the Handbags and go through to the Granny.

do you realise your posts often read like letters to the editor in those old style "women's magazines"?

Dear Abby: I know boys will be boys, but my ‘boy’ is seventy-three and he’s still chasing women. Any suggestions?
Response: Don’t worry. My dog has been chasing cars for years, but if he ever caught one, he wouldn’t know what to do with it.

This doesn't make sense to me on a number of levels.

Firstly, who factors freak accidents and dying from rare tragic illnesses into their short/medium-term life plans? Unless such things are already somewhat known?

Secondly, where is he blaming "the missus"? He's saying it's a decision they made together for the good of their family. It sounds to me like your interpretation of that is blaming the missus.

Thirdly, players are human beings so yes quite a few would be more than justified in wanting to come back to their home states because of Covid. But the reality is a brownlow medalist is going to have more power to actually make that a reality than most. Additionally, starting a family in the coming months and weighing up where to raise them in an unexpected climate is not a position "every" footballer is in - not even close.

I think you are wrong. Give them a reason to want to win, to do it for him and themselves. He was a warrior for them when they had no-one else to fight, and (in my opinion) you don't leave people behind.

They will have years after to play on without him to be pragmatic. You cannot turn your back on those who made you who you are today.

Also helps when you have been paid 70% of your contract in the first two years, but let's not go there.

Why do some ppeople and posters assume players are stoic, emotion less zombies who can rise above personal/family tragedies?

Jordan Bannister had to retire from an imo extremely promising field umpiring career to look after his brother who suffered a tragic paraplegic accident that required 24/7 care and also Aaron Francis was (from what I have ascertained from many sources over the years) really crushed by the tragic death of his brother, which contributed to him having some real serious MH issues in the first few years of his career (as much as I hate Essingtin, I am pleased Francis is starting to become a decent player for *)

I know very well a couple of Josh Schache's family members personally. He is a good kid who really appreciated and was grateful for his time in Brisbane, but he honestly had decent and very valid family bases reasons for wanting to go home to Victoria.

End of the day, despite the huge amount of money involved, footy is only a relatively small part of a players life (in professional terms, 15 years seems tops these days) but family and family needs are for life.

Understand what you are saying. All we are saying is that players demand 5 year contracts, their managers convince clubs who probably reluctantly agree and then after 2 or 3 years they want to go home. Nobody is saying you have to stay interstate for the rest of your life. Just honour your contract, especially when you have been paid 70% of the contract in your first two years.

Well it looks like Neale is staying put at Brisbane (for the time being), but by the same.token, if player is still contracted, and does have a legitimate, heartfelt reason for going home (like Josh Schache), I think most clubs should be decent enough to respect their player's wishes.

Regardless of the player's conduct in requesting a trade (in this case Lachie Neale, nothing justifies the abuse of a player or his spouse via social media whatsoever

Bit sad for Nathan Jones to miss the gf. Absolutely commend him putting family first (NFI if he was a genuine selection possibility), but he was there through all Melbourne's sh*t. He deserves to be there on the day.
- "It's a tough choice, should I play in the GF or go see my kids birth?"

- "You're not playing"

- "I'll just go then"

- "Ok"
