So trading in HMac with our 2nd round pick that same draft and already having 2 ruckman already here didn't have anything to do with it??
Reality vs Fantasy ??
Yep let's draft 2 ruckman with our first 2 picks... yep that sounds legit.
Poor old GWS who needed a ruckman didn't bother taking him with their 5.
Had a great interview with them as well.
Couldn't wait to hit Bondi and Coogee apparently... lol
With the amount of trouble we had with our rucks over the last decade I’m not sure there wasn’t an argument that we needed to focus on the rucks since Pill left…but hey the club hasn’t focused to develop a ruck since Blake …so there was no hope for Grundy anyway I guess

It's widely know he was arrogant and petulant in interviews with other clubs. I'm sure he even insulted the demons during an interview. He wanted to go to collingwood and tried his best to put the other clubs off. Basically draft tampering.

Pretty much the same as Wingard who essentially told GWS to f-off and that he wouldn't be leaving SA to play football. So while they could draft him he had no interest in moving interstate and it would be a wasted selection

hes like Domsy was.

Mostly reliable in the air.. does some nice things defensively but lets himself down terribly with poor choices and or poor skill execution at bad times. And when you are a defender that misses what is considered the "Easy "things it usually comes costly the other way.

I really dont think he's as bad as he's made out to be - but he's also painted a target on himself by making the clangers he has.

A little more skill control/judgement and take the bottom 10% of howlers away.. the noise would be different IMO.

Agree in principle, that they are similar types of players. Both defensively minded, know their limitations to a certain degree.

The big difference, though, is that Lonergan took the opposition's biggest and best key forward. Kolo on the other hand isn't big enough to do this.

You get away with offering little with ball in hand if you are nullifying the oppositions best forward, Kolo doesn't do either particularly well.

Agree, but you need that base of top 10 picks to start with.

Melbourne is the perfect example of doing both. Oliver, Petracca, Salem, Viney, Brayshaw, Jackson and Pickett the top end draft talent. Brown, May and Lever the traded talent. They wouldn't be playing Saturday night without having done both.
So do you want us to tank and finish on the bottom? Thats the only way you can get that many draft picks! Melbourne must have 15+ first rounder in their team after years of finishing in the bottom few (and tanking). Not going to build a side from draft picks in the 20’s - 50s.

The more I read about Clark and Scarlo.. it seems to boil down to a few points that no one can seem to answer.

1 Is Clark being unmotivated and Lazy the issue.. and Scarlo called him on it and Clark pouted and here we are. Scarlo expects the most and the best and if you don’t bring it he’ll tell you’ll... and for a kid that has survived on and relied on his natural talent getting him thru at the lower levels it’s now hard to work and not just “ have it happen”

2 is Scarlo being a hard arsed dick and not giving Clark the extra support the needs being away from home.. covid etc and alienating him from himself and the group as a result? Not all kids are gonna take feedback well... GAJ needed a few lessons at his age too... but if more help is needed the head down bum up dance ain’t always the answer.

So I feel for S Hocking a bit.
A month ago we were top of ladder.. no real injuries.. cookie hanging around to do the stadium stage 5.. team was good and everything was firing.. double chance secured..

Now Cookie has gone.
We got flogged in another PF.
The list is older.
The kids are all wanting to play and are leaving to do it.. well the ones that can get offers are..the rest for no luv and are still here with the same issues that stopped then getting offers
The coaches box looks like Beirut.. well now you just need pick a Melbourne CBD street really thanks to all the big and strong thugs hiding like the shut stains they are in the tradie crowds..

It’s a fine time to take over the CEO role. Not saying it’s all in the dumpster.. and change can be good.. but a lot of change at once on the back is long term stability can be unsettling .

TL/dr

The way Steve hocking patrolled the back pocket, I reckon he's up for the task.
Love his no nonsense approach.
Hoping the clear out process stamps him as one of the clubs greats for renewal
It is needed desperately and I reckon it's right up his alley
He played in an era of tough yet attractive footy.
Hope he contributes to bringing our brand back

If Voss takes Lappin with him, then its pretty much a clean sweep. I guess they are grappling with do they make a 5 year commitment to rebuild with Chris Scott (perhaps why they have offered Lappin a 5 year deal to run development), or they make it a clean change all round. Looking like its Scott with a new team for next 5 years. Given the sticking with the wrong game plan has been longer than 5 years, you hope the reportedly tougher Hocking us asking the hard questions upfront around game plan etc prior to ticking off a 5 year deal with Chris Scott. If you are unclear in any way Chris, we are done with your plan and we dont believe you when you try to ''manage'' us, so thats your base point.

Jesus, people have short memories here.

With a real ruck we'd probably have at least one if not two more flags right now. Ruck has been a priority for a decade and if a half decent one in the right age bracket is available we should make it happen. You can get midfielders too, it's not one or the other.

Amen i dont know why more people dont get this.

Lets not go down the Grundy rabbit hole in this thread... there are 1000s of posts about it in other places.. go add to them there. '

This is 2021 Drafting and Trading.

Move on.

I merely raised it in the context of the ludicrous suggestion that getting a ruck is not a priority.

Not tank and finish bottom, but the line has to be drawn that this particular list needs a major rebuild and not a couple of minor rejigs. It depends on what your ultimate goal is. Do you want to participate in finals every year or do you want to take a step or 2 back for a few years and come back with a new group.

Club needs to decide either now or at the latest next year.

I for one would be happy to miss finals for 3 or 4 years in an attempt to rebuild the list and have another go.

I understand this comes with the risk we could miss finals for a decade but it's a gamble I'd be happy to take.

no I think Clark is better suited to the Laird/Tuohy/Lloyd role, accumulating possesions and running off the HBF
Oh I agree in respects of Wojo especially ... but we haven't had a Wojo type in years. This current set of players it is Stewart who does the floating through/attacking from HBF. Tuohy was up the ground more (GWS final when he was sweeping he was excellent ... but that was by virtue of Stewart not playing).

Added to that there is a huge discrepancy in the first round. Picks under 10 are worth twice as much. Maybe more. Try trading for one now.

Pretty much all of those guys where drafted, bid on, traded for using premium single digit draft picks. Then throw in the blue chips bust over 10 years like Toumpas, Tyson, Cook, Scully, Gysberts, Trengrove.

The Bulldogs aren’t too dissimilar. The cream of thier team Bont, MacRea, Naughton, Etc etc

William Guerts from Dromana would be an interesting late pick, also played games with Pies reserves. plays mobile ruck
As someone who follows and played in that league, he might be just too short to ruck but he is really good at ground level and can play anywhere, I would take him to play backline or forwardline and he would impress. Could easily be backup ruck too. Might be just too short to be a 1st ruck.

That’s right. Players have different pathways. Some will make an immediate impact. Some will be slow burners. But it would be hard to argue against that if you give a kid a sustained opportunity and give him confidence by playing him in his appropriate position it will result in a better outcome than if you leave them to languish in the VFL and only give them a game here or there (I realise covid has made the task more difficult of course).
To be fair to Henry, the knock on him was always his match awareness, so often he got the ball on HB, went for a run at a crucial time and was run down from behind giving up a goal scoring opportunity.

His role now as an intercept defender is spot on, if he and Stewart can coordinate like Lever and May do our backline will be in very good shape.

GUN?? Now thats putting a little bit too much mayo on it.
Became a very dependable backman and a great clubman.
Good bloke to boot!
He became a gun lockdown defender, he was a questionable forward, but rewatch the 2011 GF where Cloke looks like he might bust the game open, had 3 goals upto the half way point of the 6 and then Lonners goes onto him and completely shuts him out. Heaps of other times where he shut down Buddy or Roughy as well, he rarely got beaten.

right.. and then the pebble rolls downhill and we have the same arguments from 2012 thru to now.

Your reference was fine but it started more of the same again.... as always happens and this is not the place for it.

Its stopped ... carry on.

Domsy was an unbelievably dependable defender. That is the difference
Kolo chokes when the pressure is on.
Has cost us in finals

0 Brownlow votes. total plodder based of that evidence.

I do wonder if the club is now regretting giving Selwood that extra year, lets be honest he looked absolutely cooked in the finals.

Personally I don't. We aren't winning the flag next year so for him to be gifted (worst case scenario) a season to break 350 games and the captaincy record is justified for his career to this point.

Going to be very disappointed when the change of assistant coaches is that they are replaced by people already at the club.

Surely a budding senior coach would think it's a great club to come to with the winds of change blowing and the senior coach with a year to run on his contract. If I was Kingsley or Yze I'd be getting down the highway.
