Serious question here... do people think Jyhe Clark will get to pick 8 ( as Ashcroft will get bid against )

Its possible but i reckon unlikely.
That said if north get p1 and 2 it changes the likely phantom draft order so he might get to 7 (8).

Depth is great for our younger players.
Especially someone like Neale.

Will be good to see our VFL side competitive again

I dont think things have changed too much for him ...its the young mids. 5 out of 6 players drafted last year were mids..

No KPP ... and we get 7 this year and according to most , will add another mid. Its like a mini version of being at Gold Coast or GWS. ..They will just have to standout to push thru.

In a way its just like what Selwood did...and Prismall didn't

I know it’s early to discuss the draft.
But can someone give me a Key position defender (196+) to look at for pick 7?

I’d prefer 2.

Years back I had lever well ahead of Goddard (still think Goddard wasn’t developed correctly)

But I think that’s where we should be looking at.

Busslinger would be the one although 7 is early because he finished the season early injured he might get to 10-14. Lewis hayes (sam hayes brother) i quite like and also josh weddle but they are both late r1/early r2 chances no way you take either at 7 (and 7 might be our only pick due to list spots). I still maintain northam could be moulded into a good kpd too but hes more a rookie chance.

With so many mids coming in now I agree we should probably look at key position but I think this may not be the draft for defenders. Could very easily end up with a McAsey

We definitely need a kpd if sav goes but i think more likely one of our 3 rookie list spots goes on that. Theres some decent kpds in this pool but most of them are 2nd round prospects and we wont have any picks in that range.

I think using history as a guide, you can get decent KPD with later picks without having to burn an early pick on one.

SDK was obviously reasonably high, but still late first round. Personally I would hate to use a single figure pick on a key defender. Very risky IMO when you can get good value with a later pick.

Key forwards on the other hand...I'd be happy be use an early pick on one but likely Cadman won't be available.

One of Clark or Mackenzie as a gun mid would be ideal.

I hope you're right, and I certainly don't think Jack Bowes making strides in 2023 is outlandish by any means.

At the risk of getting my mate Pure_Ownage off side, I've always had reservations in relation to Menegola - not saying he hasn't played some good footy with us (and his strong 2020 GF nearly tipped me over into finally becoming and advocate/believer), but the tenability of Menegola's position on the list isn't something that really gives me much pause.... if anything I'm wondering where the acquisition of Bowes leaves Cooper Stephens ...

It's funny, ''inside mid'' is often roughly equatable with a certain hard-nosed ruggedness, and I don't exactly see Bowes like that (like I've mentioned to you Turbo; I usually saw Bowes played as a defender when at the Suns) - but then again, I'm not sure those types of uncompromising adjectives spring to mind when talking about Cam Guthrie (who I find an admirable exponent).

I'm more than willing to give Jack Bowes the benefit of the doubt and time to grow into his preferred role.

#7 at the ND is a very exciting outcome and captures the imagination, but Bowes ('steak knives' as one poster would have it) could well ultimately outperform whoever we draft @ #7.

Great outcome today, worst case scenario Bowes is '''just'' handy depth and we fluff the #7 selection - but we've potentially gone some way to further rejuvenating the list in the exact way that trade week should.

Hocking has certainly had an affect .. directly or indirectly. I love it but the flow has all been one way so far but that will change.

There will be fall out. As I said. If I were Ess Id come at us hard. Sal Cap... and a couple of players that would step in and make them better immediately. The message from BScott about conditioning seems to say that he questions that about them. Parfitt , Stephens , Menegola id be giving them all a call . Whats the worst that can happen Geelong say no but it puts a number in their memory for 12 months time

Riley collier dawkins was also a bont type. I feel the best players are a nobody type and their own type.

From memory joel selwood was an outside mid like shane Crawford who was slow with poor disposal.

The comparisons get quite silly and are often way off the mark in reality and some of the next wayne careys dont and even end up playing a game of footy
I see your point
I should clarify by Bont type I mean big mid with skills who can go forward and kick goals
Petracca, Cripps.. the modern prototype

Yeah, mid surely

The last thing Essendon need is an undersized mid to go with McGrath, Shiel, Parish and Merrett.

That's why I doubt they would select Jhye Clark.

Different player to them. McGrath is not even a mid. but I very happy for them to look elsewhere.

Clark.. No I do not see them selecting Clark either.

I liked this comment on Ess board

Do you go to the Cats, who, as good as they've been to snag a flag, aren't really tipped to go at it for too long. A lot of pending retirements/drop-offs there. A team that's given away a lot of their draft picks in recent years and have relied on, albeit successfully, luring A grade players that have happened to be from Geelong or thereabouts...

Or,

You can look at Essendon, a team starting anew, high class facilities, retained their players despite low form, rejuvenated the careers of former teammates, a fresh Scott at the helm, having blooded a myriad of first round draft picks into the side and holding pick #4 to boot...
Stephen Dank for next CEO

Like a bit of Phillipou’s game but the kicking is extremely suspect, he’s like a tall Matt Crouch.

So now we basically have a Best 30 (if we play our Top 10 pick and we keep it, and get McKenna) - instead of most clubs with a best 22-25 or so...absolutely insane.

B: Bews, SDK, J. Henry
HB: Stewart, Kolo, Duncan
C: Holmes, Guth, Bowes
FO: Stanley, Danger, Atkins
HF: Rohan, Jez, Close
F: Stengle, Hawk, Miers
INT: Blics, Tuohy, Zuthrie, I. Smith
Next up: O'Connor, Menegola, Parfitt, Bruhn, O. Henry, Sav, Jhye Clark?, McKenna?

Nah 18 will be henry and fr1 bruhn
Bowes will be our f2 (so long as afl gives approval) plus 38 and 48 that we wont use (yes i know gc wont use them either but they can be traded somewhere else for a future 2nd etc for gc.

Man, it has not been a good few weeks for them

Missed finals
Racism allegations
Cats win premiership
Persona non grata wins norm
Getting Bruhn
Not getting Bruhn
Cats getting Bruhn
Getting Bowes and pick 7
Racism enquiry launched
Not getting Bowes or 7
Getting Jhye Clark
.....
..
.
?

Jeez when you map it out like that...that's rough as. I almost feel bad for them...

Its probably good example of why traditionally you had to have multiple drafts to get it done. Just not the right players every year.

Where do you see that bronski beat kid going . Seems a nice size that could play back and forward. probably in the 20's.

Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
Key defender/forward
August ranking: 27

Every player needs at least one weapon to be picked by an AFL club, and then to make it at the level. Gruzewski's is his marking, which has been on show throughout this year despite an injury absence mid-season. He showed it last week for Vic Metro, too, when the versatile key-position player flew high and took a massive hanger in the front half and slotted the goal. Gruzewski can read the play well, be used at both ends and grabs it when it comes his way.

My son and I (non surfers) went to Urbnsurf. Exhausted wading back into the current and waves, but it is an experience.
Yeah it looks kind of cool despite its surrounds, just taking the piss because I grew up near Essendon and hate them with every fibre of my being.

Philosophically i agree with you re kpd (not re kpf you still need to pick them very early) but our tactics will be interesting.
Bowes and bruhn sort out our mids for a while whereas we have a lot of kpp over 30 plus sav and neale both out of contract next year so we are going to need to bring in some talls soon (as they take time to develop).

So that would be another reason to split 7 (not saying we should but its possible) so we could take one mid and one tall in r1.

I suppose we could focus on the FA market for good talls but they are harder to get as there are less of them.
Will be fascinating to see how we manage the list.
