Ratagolea plus 38 for Henry?

Nah pies will want a top 25 for henry and rightly so.
Plus sav will want gametime if he moves and not sure he would see it with frampton mcstay and kreuger as ins for pies.
I think if he goes its to a club that has a kpd spot for him like port.

I agree with PO on Neale. I was at the Power game in Adelaide when he played. I am thinking he is a replacement for Blitz in a few years after helping bridge the ruck till Conway is full time no 1 ruck. Neale is an exciting player, and in a game Chris Scott quoted after the GF as a crucial one for the team and our system, Neale looked like he belonged and ran everywhere. Perhaps he could be our next hybrid ruck/ruck rover - very rare to get one anytime, and we have Blitz to teach him.

Yeah i agree with all that guys his size who mark that well yet have really good mobility at ground level are rare..i know we will have guys itching for gametime..hopefully the club has made him understand hawk is 34 and with sav either going or kpd neale is hawks heir apparent. We need to do everything we can to sign him hes a priority signing for 2023.

I think it’s important to retain esava. I think he played well behind the ball and will be successful as a key defender to partner SDK.

His athleticism and reach to spoil balls and fly for intercept marks (think his round 1 v Essendon intercept this text).

Can see him flourishing at CHB with assured players around him

Yeah i can see the similarity in player type although georgi was more physically developed than gruz he was just injured a lot in WA. But yes gruz could bolt up the order the same way.

Bruhn is the same age as holmes but your analysis is good. I suppose it shows why we chased bowes coming into 25 as we have an age gap there. I agree its a gap we can and likely will address via FA-im not super worried as there will be good mid options to chase next year (hello parish).

Im more worried about our KPP spread..in 2023 hawk 34 stanley ceglar blicavs 32 cameron 30..kolo will be 28 next year too..yes sdk is a star and henry is very good but we need more KPP coming through. I like what ive seen from conway and neale but we will need more and they are harder to get in FA than mids.
We need to do everything we can to convince neale to re-sign next year.
I think we sign an experienced ruckman end of next season (maybe 27ish years old). Definitely need another key forward via the draft. Key defence I could see being topped up by trade/free agency in 2 or 3 years. Can generally find some decent prospects that way a by then Henry could well be playing the Taylor role at CHB anyway. But you're right it could still be on the agenda at future drafts.

I’ve been pretty harsh on Kolo over the course of the season and thought there’s a chance Ratugolea could take his spot (Kolo being undersized) when he got a opportunity and a bit more experience. But Kolo was pretty ****ing awesome in the finals and that now seems a tough ask for Ratugolea.

It’s gonna be hard to get game time to all these players if we sign them. Looking at the games played by players exiting in the middle:
  • Selwood (21)
  • Narkle (8)
And those on the bubble:
  • Parfitt (17 games)
  • C.Stephens (7 games)
I feel like we probably have space for Bowes (my pick) to be a regular but the other three (Parfitt, Stephens, Bruhn) might be in a bit of a dog fight splitting 30 odd games between them, many as sub. Maybe a few more if injuries strike.

Up forward the exits were:
  • Dahlhaus (10)
  • Higgins (5)
  • Evans (5)
On the bubble:
  • Menegola (7)
  • Rohan (13)
  • Miers (22)
  • Dempsey (2)
If I had to crystal ball it I’d say Menegola squeezes out Miers as a high half forward and Rohan retains his 3rd tall spot. That probably puts Miers/Henry on ten-ish games each with Dempsey out in the cold.

A year or two down the track though it’ll be a lot easier to squeeze everybody in. I could see this as Rohan and Smith’s last year and Danger going in two.

I think menegola might get back in but i think it would be more likely to be at rohans expense not miers. But we shall see.
Dempsey is going to be a super player but he is still very raw another year in the vfl wont hurt him.
The fringe guys who are at the stage of their career where they need to be playing are sav, stephens, parfitt (though hes better than fringe), miers (see parfitt), moc and sav. They are the ones i can see other clubs poaching next year of they arent regulars.
The 19-21yos are probably happy to wait a year or two until the older guys retire.
I reckon next year is the last for rohan, smith, (ceglar) and maybe hawk or tuohy which would make me sad. Probably stanley too if conway is ready by 2024. Menegola at his age could go retirement or FA next year too.

Danger blitz and duncan can probably squeeze out another couple years after 2023 particularly if they dont play every game.

I bet he does. Just as good an endurance athlete as Miers and he’s only 2 years removed from being named in the AA 40 man squad as a high half forward. If he’s 100% he’s a better and more versatile player.

I don't mind Menegola, but if you're looking at his career I wouldn't be one to keep referencing 2020.

He's a solid enough player, but the 2020 season is the outlier in his career, not the mean.

Former Collingwood recruiter Matt Rendell has urged the Magpies to prioritise the signing of Cat Esava Ratugolea, who is considered a big chance to depart Kardinia Park in the coming week.

Despite being contracted for 2023, there is plenty of interest in 24-year-old Ratugolea according to Geelong list manager Andrew Mackie, with Port Adelaide considered among the frontrunners.

Ratugolea has primarily been used as a key forward in his 59 games at Geelong but was thrown behind the ball at times in his four appearances in 2022 given the Cats are well stocked up forward.

But Rendell believes the 198cm Cat has to go, declaring he’s unlikely to find a spot in Geelong’s best 22.

“It’ll be interesting to see if they can keep hold of players like Ratugolea,” Rendell began on AFL Trade Radio.

Geelong also blooded Shannon Neale and Oliver Dempsey as key forwards in 2022.

---

Turning Ratugolea into O. Henry sounds an interesting prospect; but I have to question if Rendell is aware of who Ollie Dempsey is, or is Dempsey the modern key forward at 185cm?

Ollie Dempsey key forward? Someone didn't check their notes

Future 1st and 18 is plenty for henry and bruhn when both are ooc.
The jury is still out on both of them after two seasons in the system. Both have potential... but then again, so does Sav.

Bruhn's progress seemed to stall this year and he only played one game of real note... however encouragingly, that was when he was given a midfield role. Getting cleaned up by essentially running straight into Cordy's shoulder in round 22 was an odd incident. Not sure if it was a spatial awareness sort of thing but he was totally oblivious to Cordy's presence.

Ollie Henry showed a bit in a couple of games and snagged a few goals but at this stage is still very green and inconsistent in his output. Very much a confidence player at the moment and can fluff absolute sodas in front of goal or go missing for the entire match if he starts poorly.

Happy to get both on board but clearly their trade value has diminished since being recruited and being OOC reduces it even further. Late first round is generous for either of them. Early second is probably what other clubs would offer in a similar situation but the Cats like to get these sort of deals done.

Getting Neale to re sign is close to our no1 priority IMO. Has potential, and is literally it when comes to our future KPF depth.

I’d say the reverse. 2022 was the outlier and he was remarkably consistent the others years. 2018 being his best year when he kicked 20+.

Exactly. They're the ones that gave the green light for it to go ahead - and GC have privately and publicly given their reasoning for it to go ahead. Every reporter has reported on it, without any exceptions. It's crazy, but it's a way for GC to reset once and for all, and go big in attracting a free agent in the next two years.

I think hes a gun but miers is in really good form and plays a role that im not sure sam can play.
I think its more likely menegola would play as a marking half forward (rather than a high hff) option who can push up to midfield when needed which would squeeze out rohan as the 3rd marking target..but im guessing.

Esava played ok in games where we were well in control. Even in the VFL before he was recalled he had 5 possessions. Not that possessions are a solid guide but his positioning was awful. He was just running around the D50 like a lost lamb.

I know he was put there late and I hope a pre-season back there improves him but I just don't see it.

Stephens, Nevitt, Willis, Kreuger, Whyte, Bowes, Bruhn, J.Clarke.
Our VFL team will have a good midfield. Toss in O.Dempsey, O.Henry up forward and McKenna down back, Ceglar and Conway in the ruck. Don't forget Esava in a key position. This team could match it with some AFL teams.

Vfl team needs an extra key defender or two (especially if sav is traded) but our midfield and forward line will be much better than this year-hopefully will be more competitive.

Watching Jyhe Clark tape it’s kind of crazy how similar to Bruhn he is, Oliver Hollands kept grabbing my attention in the Vic Country stuff.

2020 was his best year, IMO - narrowly missed out on AA in a GF side. With that said, I'd argue that our new gameplan just doesn't suit him. He has an elite tank, but he's not overly quick, doesn't have quick reaction times, and while he plays the wing role really well, he also seems to be crumble under pressure a lot of the time - which is not ideal for a guy who basically needs to cover both sides of the ground at all times.

Our old kick/mark game plan suited him, but given what I saw this year, I think our new play on/risky kick/high pressure game plan is seeing him phased out. Could be wrong and he could bounce back, but I definitely think he's no guarantee and it's gonna be an uphill battle for him to squeeze back into the 22 with all the added talent we're bringing in.

Already discussing how to handicap Geelong from being attractive to players. Wow.

It's quite ridiculous isn't it - it wasn't that long ago that no one was interested in coming to Geelong.

It's just whinging from other clubs, plain and simple (but mainly journalists and ex-players it seems) surrounding Geelong's ability to attract talent - they want to penalize us for having a strong club culture?

Players aren't coming for money, the club has simply implemented a workplace culture that is an attractive proposition to prospective employees (= footballers).

The club's location is definitely a bonus as we are the only semi-rural club in the country; short of forcing the club to relocate these moaners are just going to have to suck it up.

We've got no COLA, no extra league assistance propping us up - it's been clever management and a somewhat unorthodox approach (i.e. less contact hours) that attracts players to the club - then good coaching and more good management to capitalize on our ability to get people through the door.
