All the same person:

- Why would Bowes agree to it though? No sane person would accept the same amount of money over 4 years as they’re owed over 2 (unless they’re receiving an extra income outside the salary cap).

- So you’re saying Bowes would accept the equivalent of $200k per year over years 3 and 4 when he’d likely fetch hundreds of thousands more on the open market? Sorry but there’s no way he’d do that.

- No I don’t. But again, it doesn’t make sense for Bowes to agree to spreading his salary unless he’s receiving something extra outside the salary cap. Which is extremely fishy.

Faste
Drafts and trading board is a riot atm.

Two weeks ago we were the old age home that had sold its future for some magic beans by paying mercenaries massive money.
Now it is egregious that we're acquiring young talent with the cap space these old blokes leave behind.

Although pick 7 is terrific it’s not like it’s a top 3 pick. I’ve said this a few times but we have to be mindful of next year when a big swag of retirements come. Especially as it sounds like our 2nd round pick is gone as part of this Bowes deal.

It would be very nice replace list spots with picks in the 1st or 2nd round.

We could so easily just take 1 pick this year with trades and rookie upgrades and be just fine with the talent injected.

For me I’d push for this years 2nd for Bowes and 7.

Gold Coast want a future second. And I don't think haggling over the details like that is a good idea for this deal...

I agree with PO on Neale. I was at the Power game in Adelaide when he played. I am thinking he is a replacement for Blitz in a few years after helping bridge the ruck till Conway is full time no 1 ruck. Neale is an exciting player, and in a game Chris Scott quoted after the GF as a crucial one for the team and our system, Neale looked like he belonged and ran everywhere. Perhaps he could be our next hybrid ruck/ruck rover - very rare to get one anytime, and we have Blitz to teach him.
Key position. FF/Ruck.

Have people not paid attention at what happens when a socialist system is introduced.

The current system is stopping the lower teams from moving forward. North has been really good financially and haven't been reckless like the expansion clubs. They have had the capital but there are two many barriers to utilising their good management.

Maybe let a club pay two marquee players outside the cap whatever they want. $2mill no worries. If you can fund them you can have them. If you go insolvent you lose points.

Drop free agency to 5 or 6 years as well with no trading required.

There are just too many compromises in the draft and cap system. Needs to be a massive overhaul.

But let's wait a few years shall we.

The AFl has its issues..but is a capitalistic law of the jungle system better. I doubt living in a Premier League system would be better for most. Kt would not be tter for Geelong. Id think the power clubs would just dominate at the top but it would be a different group than it is atm. The intent is good but I feel some of the mechanisms have lost their edge.

Really a player out of contract should be a free agent. If you flood the market with FA's and then give bottom sides the ability to grab players with just dollars ..does it equalise? Clubs would try to keep players contracted , like now but even more so. I have mentioned the 5-6 years before as well..I can see that as the next change when they introduce longer contracts for draftee's

I guess id ask...is there any professional sport of any code that shuffles the teams year to year?

Wasn’t long ago we were the running joke in the AFL, “X player isn’t old enough for Geelong, wait til he’s 36 and then he’ll go there”, retirement village”

“Geelong can’t win finals under Scott, they’ll fail again and we’ll all laugh at them”

“They can’t win at the G, no hope for the flag”

We win the flag, young players want to come to us, we’re also now about to acquire pick 7 too, and it’s all “BS, this can’t happen, they’re cheating”

“AFL needs to step in and stop this from happening”

“Trade bans for Geelong”.

How it’s all changed in the space of 2 weeks, suck it up oppo fans, the tears taste wonderful!

With Higgins and Dahlhaus gone, we currently have no cap wastage. Everyone is either in the team and being paid appropriately or a rookie. Not many clubs can say that, look at Carlton, they have McGovern and Williams on huge deals. Richmond are paying Dustin Martin 1.2m and he is part time footballer at the moment (that may change).

There are terrible deals all over the league. We had one with Lukey D but it is now gone.

I think the AFL media need to think a little more.

One would think Carltons situation might come into play if they do not get Tom Dek to sign there..

Nice work
Now that we know the state of things, if I was gonna take a guess, based on the current AFL Indicative Draft Order, I'd say we end up doing this:

******************************

OUT: Future 1st and Pick 38
IN: Bruhn and GWS Future 2nd (tied to Collingwood)

OUT: GWS Future 2nd (tied to Collingwood)
IN: Bowes, Pick 7

OUT: Pick 18
IN: O. Henry

Overall:

OUT: Future 1st, Pick 18, Future 2nd (Collingwood), Pick 38
IN: Pick 7, Bowes, Bruhn, O. Henry

********************************

GWS send Pick 38 on to Melbourne for Bedford and we get our Future 2nd for GC, while they get their Future 1st. Everybody wins.
Nice work, do you think it’s possible to get a sweetener for the Henry trade (ie 3rd rounder or future 3rd rounder back)

I bet he does. Just as good an endurance athlete as Miers and he’s only 2 years removed from being named in the AA 40 man squad as a high half forward. If he’s 100% he’s a better and more versatile

I would have said yes before the finals but Miers went you another level in the finals. Surprised the crap out of me as did Kolo…

Man the Pies fans are delusional. Multiple posters saying Henry is one of the top 5 players from his draft so pick 18 is insulting. Also comments wondering why we're prioritising Bruhn when Henry is "clearly" the better player. I've got to remind myself Ash Johnson and Nathan Krueger were preferred to him in finals and that draft includes players like JUH, Tilthorpe, Perkins, Gulden, Macdonald, Holmes, DGB, Nik Cox, Chapman, Bowey, O'Driscoll, Bruhn, etc.

Don't get me wrong I think both Bruhn and Henry have talent and could be very good players. But they're both a fair way off at the moment and neither are worth a top 15 pick.

The Suns don't want this year pics, as they don't have the list spots

In a deal like this you just say yes. We're clearly coming out better off.

But I agree that picks next year would be preferable as we'll likely have more list spots to fill. Probably the only way you could do it is to then on trade pick 7 for someone's first rounder next year that will be around the same spot.

Jesus some of the posters in the trade thread really lack the basic critical thinking and maths skills needed in life

All this thrashing around and trying to say with a straight face that Bowes isn’t getting what he owes is so laughable

We are rumoured to be lying $2 mil over 4 years …he was owed $1.6 from the suns …am I the only one that is scratching their head over why some poster can’t grasp simple maths equations?

Wont happen as gc are only gonna take 1-2 picks like us this year they want future 2nd

I do agree next year we will have a few retirements and it would be nice to have at least 1 pick in 1st 2 rounds but we might trade a player or picks next year to get back in 2023 draft.
