I love how we like to write people off - Grundy is cooked etc.

If Grundy was a Geelong player from day dot and we were discussing options for him moving forward, I'd bet we'd be looking at the bright side and would be committed to getting him right. Hell, consider Menzel and Cowan. Sure, it's bigger money but that is the type of work the club puts in to their players that they have belief in the future for.

Also, when considering above, keep in mind Geelong wouldn't have signed him to a $7m/7yr deal earlier either - he would have already flown the coup for more money, or like others, would have stuck around for the success like our culture usually encourages.

My god that's a poor team when he finishes 3rd in their BnF.

It does and their list is terrible but it also shows he has improved from last year. I wouldnt mind bringing him across.

Kolo is 27 and atkins will be 27 next month and i doubt sav is here past his current contract.

That said agree with the rest of your list.
It shows we need a key defender and a specialist small back (unless moc or zuthrie are that)
Also need inside mids a mid aged ruck (ie aged 25-27) and potentially another kpf (in case neale leaves or doesnt come on).

Given close miers and stengle are all young and performing and dempsey looks good at vfl level i dont think we really need small/med fwds.
What might be interesting is if McKenna can be recruited as a category B rookie (been out of footy for 2 years but not sure if having played before impacts that criteria). If so I can see the club wanting him in and give big Paul T the flick?

So if Grundy goes to Melbourne that would be 4 outrageously risky and cap clogging contracts on their books wouldn't it? Because didn't they just sign Oliver, Petracca and Bradshaw to 6 year million(ish) dollar contracts?

Presume collingwood would chip in for his contract, so it wouldn't be quite as bad.

But you're right, that's a lot of money tied up for a long period of time on 4 players.

Some parallels to GWS signing Kelly, Coniglio, Whitfield, Greene to long term deals on ~$1mil a year. That's not turning out so well for them now...

Sonsie looked good for tigers in the back half of the yr. Wanted him at our first pick. Whilst I rate conways chances of being a good player, I have just about zero confidence in knevitt. Looked below GFL standard all year. Hope I’m wrong with time on his side… but has been really disappointing this yr
Off one season? Hes underdeveloped (skinny as a stick) and played quite well in both the VFL and as a sub. Has the frame to be a beast. Also he played the wing to develop his two way running but he won’t be a wing at AFL level. We do it all the time in the VFL. Neale playing back, SDK playing fwd etc etc etc

I just don’t get ppl writing off players in their first 6 months at the club. I could literally name 3/4 of our list who ppl have said the same thing. Ppl wanted Chapman, Hawkins, Bartel absolutely run out of the state well past their first 6 months.

You may be right but I really struggle to see how that opinion is balanced. Kids in their first season that some how debut for Geelong whilst contending aren’t GFL standard and as a rule are showing flashes that will hold them in very good stead. For me that’s the best sign of how he went this year. We only need to go back one season to when ppl just couldn’t see it with Holmes. Now he has legit claims on being the best in his draft year.

Because he last played afl less than 3 years ago i dont think he can be cat b.

Can come as a CAT A rookie via SSP though.

Bailey Scott had his chance to come to Geelong via F/S and chose Norf.

He can stay there.

Hopper could have come across earlier aswell (not via F/S though) and we are hoping to welcome him with open arms.

I'd talk Scott on the cheap (even semi-cheap)... Can't see them just handing him to us after finishing 3rd in their BnF anyway.

There were no reports in the press before the B&F that Scott could finish in the top three. It demonstrates that he was doing exactly what the coaches wanted, and Clarkson wouldn’t want him to leave if that is the case.

Apologise if this has already been posted, but read this tonight regarding a few out of contract Cats & new deals

With at least one or two of theses re-signings, it may mean that those on the fringes find it tougher to stay, unless we see a few unexpected retirement or trade requests...

DAD SECURES NEW DEAL FOR CAT

Zach Guthrie’s season of rapid improvement will see him rewarded with the Cats in contract negotiations with his father Andrew, who manages his contract.

Guthrie, 24, had played only 33 games in his first five years at the Cattery but has played 18 games this year and held his spot in a side that couldn’t fit in Brandon Parfitt and Mark O’Connor.

He isn’t a high possession winner but is safe with the ball in hand (76 per cent kicking efficiency) and has locked away his opponent week after week.

The Cats will also secure Isaac Smith, Tom Hawkins, Zach Tuohy and Joel Selwood on one-year deals.

They are hopeful Jacob Hopper might find his way to Geelong but given Richmond is also sniffing around he is yet to choose his trade destination.

Hmmmmm Selwood 1 year extension.... I wonder how accurate that is...

He is just a kid. Maybe he thought a young team would amount to something and he could be part of that

He went there because he wanted the closest club to melbourne uni (geograohically).

Guessing we'll find out soon enough
I love him I really do.... his the best captain we have had, but I don't want him to play on next year, there are patches this year we're you can see him being that bit slower etc...
Plus another year I don't want to see him go into struggling town where his playing ok football atm...
But please I do love him, but I hope he can bow out as a premiership captain

This year is tough to be a fringe or developing player coming out of contract!

So for sure we have Higgins and Dal retiring and I would think most likely Selwood. Not sure we have anyone else retire

With Sav, Stephens and some of the younger “fringe players” all contracted for 2023 then really we are left with the following players who having played (much or at all) this year out of contract (Ignoring Paul T who is on rookie B so doesnt help free up list)

Francis Evans, Quinton Narkle, Sam Simpson, Nick Stevens, Zane Williams

Quinton gone for sure (?) so that is 4 spots. I reckon (imho) they will aim for at least 6 new spots for draft and trade (Unless they get someone to take Sav or Stephens in a trade?). I think Evans and Stevens probably most at risk to be delisted?

Must be on quite favourable deals. Not sure how we have the list spots to make many moves.
