Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

I have no idea how we achieve it, but goodness me if we got Oliver AND Smith that absolutely changes the game

*pending both players firing and fit of course
If we managed to get both and they were fit and playing well the CFL memes would be shouted so much louder it would be awesome

Don't stress.
The powers that be will either say yay or nay based on many components.
That are both known and also the unknown.
If it's a yay then we know they(The Club) have weighed it all up and are happy to pull the trigger.
If that's the case we should all be happy, as they've done the checks and balances.
But Boy 0 Boy i'd be pissing myself with jubilation if that pick 5 is involved... lol

If we're taking on the real bulk of his contract, I'd want picks coming along with Oliver - not sure we get a repeat of the Bowes deal

If it's more like the split when Grundy moved from Collingwood to Melbourne, then a 2nd round pick from us is more in the suitable type deal

IF the powers to be a the club decide he is a suitable recruitment option, I fully expect Mackie will negotiate hard on the terms of the deal and that ultimately opposition fans will look at us at the bad folk again which means we've walked away in a pretty good position

We are now having meetings with Oliver… I’m pretty sure I maintained strongly over the last few months we are deep into Oliver. I kept saying it and a lot of people on here weren’t having it. Nothing about this is surprising to me. I just hope we can now convince him and his management in these meetings and get him across.

IIRC you said a while back, despite our ongoing interest, Oliver didn't want to leave Dee's?

What do you think has changed? Trac / further internal issues arising at the club?

We need to replenish our Big/tall man stocks i reckon.

Jury out on whether they make it but we have invested a lot in talls at the draft. SDK, Neale, Conway, COS, Edwards. Rubber starting to hit the road for a few of them, see how they go next year.

Well done. Fingers crossed we get him on a deal/with a deal that suits us to a T.
Pick Number 5 can do a many a wonderful thing for us this year is all i am gonna say.

Rucks we should be good on same with tall backs depending on health and development but i would like at least 1 tall forward to develop as backup/depth

Wow. We're serious about this. YOTC on the money here.

I don't think we can bring in both he and Smith.

I have a feeling Smith is off to the Pies if they get that P12.

Yes we can Clayton is a late pick at best on that albatross contract.
Something like Smith for a first and 2nd and Clayton for a future 3rd or something is absolutely doable.

I don't know everything about Oliver's recent years at Melbourne and just how far his troubles go but I've posted before about him.

He wasn't a prick of a kid. He has the potential to go rogue if he doesn't respect what's happening but he will listen and follow strong leaders. Under Selwood I'd have zero issue taking Oliver, he is the type that would've readily followed Selwood. I'm surprised Gawn hasn't completely succeeded in this space but I get the impression even Gawn is let down by those running the club.

I think the challenge for Geelong is our leadership going forward, Danger is a professional but not quite the all round leader Selwood was (and he obviously only has a short time left). Stewart has the presence of someone you'd fall in behind but again, no Selwood.

Who's going to lead a Clayton Oliver type in a few years time?

I'd do the trade because whilst Cameron and Stewart are still on the list, we could very much be in the window. Under the right structure Oliver will be okay, but with our leaders (including Hawk) slowly moving on, our leadership culture and structure is quite as rock solid as it once was.
Some good thoughts and considerations here. I guess the club has a pretty good idea internally of our next generation emerging leaders and whether they can support and lead an Oliver type.

Us getting him will be very dependant on how he presents and where he is currently at.

Ideally we would have a young key forward but with the picks we are going to have left there is no point drafting another Phoenix Foster. Use this years picks on small & medium backs / forwards. Might have a chance of jagging a player that way at 50+ in the draft. Tall forwards you would have none.

Those Pick/s. That could be the KEY.
Especially if it covers a certain Bailey Smith's/Dogs demands in one way... or another.

Didn't someone here say that Oliver had told the GFC in the first instance that he wanted to play for them??

Holmes and Zuthrie for example scream leaders

Perryman apparently getting 900k for 6 years at the Pies... hahaha what an overpay

People whinge and say "No Salary Cap at Geelong?" whenever we are linked with someone..... The reason we don't have issues is because we don't give long term deals like that to average players

You can still find good Key forwards late in a draft e.g Mitchell Lewis pick 76

Reports have suggested the Perryman contract is larger than the Battle to Hawthorn contract

Be interesting to see the FA compensation the AFL tries handing out for both

Usually I would say a player would never take a pay cut on their contract for a trade but I'm not sure it's fully out of the question for Oliver.

Clarry signed his contract in '22 and ticked the box to say index for cap increases. He signed it maybe 20 months on from salary cap cuts and the AFL mortgaging against marvel to get through covid.

You wouldn't ask him to walk away from money he agreed to play for, but if he's desperate to get out would he agree to the terms of his original contract without the indexing?

Solid player but considering it’s not to much less than Oliver is on
I know who I’d take even if he does have issues.

Which I don’t believe to be the case, hasn’t stuffed up since pre season

Very logical. If we pick up the entire contract, and we can afford it, I'm still not sure how Melbourne sells that trade to its members and stakeholders.

They're already in the spotlight, moving Oliver on for a junk pick won't go down well with their members and could very well see a drop in membership / revenue.

I think privately Dee's would be very open to doing what you have suggested. They'll want him, his problems and that contract gone. But how do they sell it to their people

CSM in charge of all three of Bailey Smith, Patrick Dangerfield, and Clayton Oliver is a pleasant coincidence

He should take a big pay cut "on the books" to keep our cap under control and we can pay him under the table from some third-party sponsor, via cash in a brown paper bag or possibly set him up with some nice land.

Win/win for everyone.

P.S. Don't let the Doggies fans know we roll this way.

Interesting thought but i can't really see anyone willing to give up millions over 6 years(that is what the indexing would = most likely)
