We haven't improved, we're a godawful mess of a team, and I think the only way forward is to persist with Himmelberg as the key forward and Crouch, Sloane and Keays as the centre bounce mids.

Come at me.
Lots of players regressed

Not Rowe Cook Keays or Butts

Rachele and Dawson from outside are much better than our own developed for sure

General summary of points, not good - bad - ugly:

  • Schoenberg going backwards in a horrendous way sums up the start to this year. Was one of our shining lights last year so not sure whats happened?
  • Murray a liability with the ball quite often, reminding me of Hartigan a little too much.
  • Pedlar gets to play, dont think he got a single minute in the midfield. If we are going to lose badly like today at least expose him to a spot he's intended to play for the long term so there's some level of benefit from it.
  • Cook looked pretty decent.
  • Rachele looks quality even in a bad performance.
  • Umpires were awful, I do my best to not include them but hard when they stifle the few bits of momentum we got by gifting goals to the opponent.
  • Keays was solid & works hard.
  • Himmerlberg has been given enough chances now, time to move on from him unless we cant play Tilthorpe for injury reasons.
  • Gollant not really sure what to make of his match
  • Smith & Dawson probably our 2 best today.
  • Fogarty meh, too many bad free kicks given away, poor performance.

Not a lot of good stuff unfortunately, could be a long year ahead.

I'm hoping Tex & Laird back soon can at least offer a bit, in particular Tex with forward structure and ensuring no more Himmelberg.

Jones and McHenry is it them or is it poor development from the club?
Jones just irks me. He is someone who was an elite junior mid having been named on the ball with Sam Walsh in the 2018 U18 AA team, so it was clear he had ability. Since playing AFL, he just completely lacks confidence and composure. He struggles to keep his feet, he rushes his kicks and he looked so clueless in the midfield, the club repositioned him to HB which is the easiest position to play on the ground. Despite some ok performances there last season, he has gone backwards again to start this season.

He's getting closer and closer to being a flop, and it seems to be between the ears rather than lack of talent.

By putting Jones at half back we gave up putting in the hard yards to develop him into an elite mid and have settled for him being an okay player in the easiest position on the ground

The Good
  • Keys excepted, this forward line looks like it's set. Gollant very much has it. McHenry can do a role. Rowe's fine. Pedlar, especially with a tank, is fine. Rachele's a beaut
  • Q4 in the middle for Rachele and he looked (for a year one player) a treat. Hopefully the above dudes nail it so he can spend more time there. Him and Pedlar going 50/50 each would be a real bonus
  • Dawson is a ripper. Nice having blokes who can kick
  • Hinge looks like he'll do a role for awhile. Good get for free.
  • Butts keeps developing, a few nice moments
  • Cook will be a real point of difference for us

The Bad
  • Everything else
  • Himmelberg is awful. Maybe needs a last chance saloon in defence?
  • You can't call TT back up after one non game on the pine, which makes it even worse
  • Fogarty can be such a liability. Limited to begin with, but that's fine. When it's not working, no pressure, immediate turnovers. Not bringing it to ground. Yuck
  • Just a general lack of composure from nearly everyone
  • ROB is not good. Loses the tap every week, triple grabbing and fumbling. What's he offering?

The Ugly
  • The midfield group is so outdated. Nearly all are slow, average ball users, undersized and lack composure and just win cheap, harmless ball.
  • The kids we've drafted to be in our midfield fit the above mold. Hardworking limited battlers. Berry, Soligo, Jones, Hately all in the same mold.
  • Who the **** is in charge of our list management strategy? Who saw the way the game was going and decided for years to invest in these outdated battlers who play one position. Could have had Zac Bailey instead of Fog, Butters or Caldwell instead of Jones, Warner instead of Worrell, Serong or Young instead of Fish, Powell instead of Pedlar (I like Pedlar, but Powell would have been unreal)
  • Sloane probably needs to retire to the forward line
  • We're really no better with Crouch in there either, are we? Zero hurt factor or defensive intent

Good:
Dawson, Hinge, Doedee, Keays, Cook.

Rachele in the middle in the last looked great.

Occasional good patches from Smith, Crouch, Butts, Gollant, Sholl.

Bad:
Mostly everything else.

Umpiring. Absolutely expected the square up from last week but yikes.

Ugly:
Himmelberg. Enough said.

Our ability to develop players has stopped. The next 5 years are going to be very painful I think.

Where to begin

- Midfield absolute hot garbage. Nothing about our midfield is good. Personnel, structures, skills, you name it. All absolutely horrific and not AFL standard

- Selecting Himmelberg was an all-time howler that a lot of unpaid, amateur football observers correctly identified before the game

- Playing high draft picks out of position. Pedlar up forward for the entire match, he's a burst midfielder! We are ruining his game by playing him there. Cook for large chunks in defense too. Mind numbing rubbish

- Our skills are deplorable and we haven't put any time into these at all over the off-season. We miss 5m handballs under no pressure.

- Forward structure is diabolical. The midfield cannot kick it to our forward's advantage

- Did I mention our midfield? We aren't making any genuine steps to improve it. We will never, ever improve by playing Sloane, Keays, Crouch and Laird (when he returns) in there over Schoenberg, Pedlar, Berry and whoever else for the majority of the match

- O'Brien is a bad player when he is ineffective around the ground (which has been for every minute he has played in 2022)
Agree 100% yet leaders and decision makers and even supporteres god help us, don't The only positive is the state of the game (ridiculous rules that most of you accept as people do our system of govt) is worse than AFC. How I miss the beautiful and tough free flowing game of 1870-2006

I’d actually give Straughan a go next week

ROB out

We'd almost be doing Thilthorpe a disservice playing him in this environment. He'll get the best defender, have one or two other key forwards in there clogging space, blocking leading areas, playing hero ball and taking their opponents straight to his space and offering no value. He'd have two on him with another defender zoning off.

Meanwhile, the mids would bomb it on his head, he'd get clobbered in packs and never be able to use his skills to lead to advantage. We're just not capable. The midfield have zero ability to move the ball forward dynamically.

How many times did C'wood get the ball through the corridor at pace today and allow themselves a targeted entrance inside 50? With forwards having space. We hold the ball up so badly and look backwards each time we get the ball in the middle that this simply isn't a reality. Only a Naughton type could survive in that forward line. Embarrassing.

Things I got from this game:

1. Adelaide has the worst midfield in the AFL by a country mile. 3 plus years to fix that. Spoon this year.

2. Fog is nothing more than a massive MAN CHILD

3. H Berg is the weakest forward to ever play for the Crows....and we already have Man child Fog !!!!

4. Nathan Buckley on commentary? Top bad if your not a Collingwood supporter watching that....typical Vic bias.

5. Umpires. Just imagine the outcry if a bunch of South Australian umpires officiated a Crows game and gave that many one sided frees...that lead to 7-8 goals.
The VFL is a complete and disgusting JOKE !!!!....Victorian umpires officiating a SA v Vic game with COMPLETE bias....and NOTHING to see here.

As I say....if the shoe was on the other foot ?????
