Imagine the stratospheric heights Mchenry's Free Kicks Against stat could reach if he was permanently on the ball around the umpire's eye.
I'd like to try a few CBA's with McHenry, Laird and Keays.
The oppo at least wouldn't waltz through our midfield like we just saw.

I've never seen our midfield and rucking so insipid. Ever!

It would result in Laird and Keays winning the ball cleanly and launching a quick attack, before the ball is returned because McHenry was reflexively holding the jumper of the player (or maybe the umpire) next to him for no reason.

Is it Nicksy making the decisions or is it the one constant that we’ve had at the club in the past few years since this “older guys over younger guys” selection/game strategy policy seems to have been the go to..

That one constant being Roo..

The bloke who, when providing special commenting on a game, when sloane/laird/keays are all in at the CB says “all the guns are in there for this one”..

This “lets play the most experienced regardless of form” policy at the club has been around longer than Nicksy…
Have been thinking exactly the same . 100%agree.
Some other fun facts about Roo.
Has been on the board since 2014 ....was never elected and never re-elected.
Was there when we got into baseball and e-sports. Given we have now got rid of both....massive mistake. Don't know the loss/profit.
Appointed Brett and Ben . Promoted Brett. Jobs for the boys.
Was there as Football Director...for the camp....wasn't going to mention that...oops just did. Knew about it before it happened...trusted Brett
Was behind the Phil Walsh (RIP) appointment. Maybe the only good thing he has done.

HOPEFULLY John Olsen is keeping a very close eye on him.

Some random thoughts...

- I thought the umpiring was OK to good - apart from no free paid when Gollant/Rachele (?) were held in the goalsquare. In fact, I thought we got the rub of the green - there were a few times I went "ooof" when we were paid what I thought was a soft/marginal free.

- Was lurking on the Port board - apparently they think Eleni is a Crows supporter and biased towards us. Interesting, seeing as how the general opinion on this board is the opposite! Supporter bias (on both sides) in action!

  • Cook must play next week.
  • Ditto Gollant.

- Frampton - I think he's been OK the last couple of weeks; maybe not our best option for the future but right now he's not "droppable" on his form alone, only if there's a better (in form) option - and is there, right now? I don't watch the SANFL.

- Overall effort and "never give up" attitude as evident, again. This is a great thing. I just hope the players get reward for it soon, or maybe they'll start to lose it.

- Our transition from defence to attack was much, much better. Kudos to both players and coaches, I guess. (Although yes, we shouldn't have been transitioning out of defence so often!).

- F50 entries also much improved. One standout for me was Dawson spotting up Tex from 40-odd metres; placed it to Tex's advantage beautifully.

- The one thing that continues to bug/frustrate me: Our oppo get spread and handball chains cleanly from stoppages, with a player on the end with time to select a kicking target - We have to fight it out (which at least we are managing, I guess) and the last player in the chain is still under pressure. As I've said before, I don't think our issue with "always handballing to a player under pressure" is skills or decision making, it's structural. Surely this is something that can be fixed.

Largely same Board, Same predictable coaching and average (at best) coaching personnel, same recruiting team that has created a list with zero elite players on it, same average team picked each week for short term results over development (not that it matters with the magnets we have on the board) - they will be lucky to win 2 games a year for the forseeable future if they don't finish the off field changes needed, then worry about actually rebuilding with some talent. No Good, Just bad and Ugly.

I thought Parish was definitely in the top 3 players on the ground, but didn't think he was a clear number one like the coaches have suggested. Shows you how undervalued any postion outside of midfielders are in any award these days, it aint just the Brownlow where it is an issue.

Hind very stiff.

He was close to best on IMO.

Isn't it funny? I really didn't notice Parish and Laird (but did notice Shiel and Keays). On the other hand, did notice all the others on the list: that's where the impact seemed to come from.

The opposition takeaways are partially structural. We usually have all our mids too close to the clearance, not 1 or 2 standing on outside who can burst away with separation). The other part is the lack of explosive pace of our largely one paced midfield.

That kick sums up Benny really..

Great effort, great endevour.

Poor skills..

The fact he’s considered to be our best midfielder at the moment is damning.

How often do we have to see the bloke delivering the ball so utterly shockingly into our forward line before some here realise that he’s not the future?.

He’s a stop gap.

We need 3 or 4 of our younger mids to overtake him. If not, we can look forward to the next 5-10 years in the wilderness.

People can be in complete and utter denial about it all they like.. but the results of the last two years and the start of this season speak for themselves..

Sloane/crouch/keays/laird arent gonna win us finals games let alone premierships. They are gonna keep us in the bottom 10.

Cue all the denialists in here to hysterically call me a “Keays hater”..
More like the bottom 4.

Murray has a long way to go as a defender as well. Saw him lose a few 1v1 battles in the Sanfl where he was a bit lost.

Has a good leap on him though.
Murray is a forward, he has poor one on one defensive skills. With his leap he's probably the best player we have on our list of crashing packs and bringing the ball to ground. I wouldn't mind seeing Murray, Gollant, Walker up forward with Rachele and the other smalls at their feet. It's at least worth a look.

Thilthorpe needs to be brought into the side as well along with Strachan. I wouldn't mind seeing Thilthorpe playing down back to further develop his game. He has good foot skills which we are crying out for in our back half which would help to decrease turnovers. He could interchange in the ruck when Strachan needs a rest. Throwing Thilthorpe up forward against the monster defenders at this stage in his development is throwing him to the wolves so trying him down back may help him to develop quicker and also help his forward craft.

Watched the replay and Crouch's offensive game was better than I remembered; 9 score involvements, 1 goal assist, 5 clearances and clean with his disposal. However, offering absolutely nothing defensively whatsoever. I remember in 2020 his defensive game completely fell away as well and was dropped for it; one of the first games he returns for against the Giants he has 14 tackles and was BOG. Keays and Laird can't be expected to do all the heavy lifting defensively, we need others stepping up. Given Berry's recent SANFL form where he has been good offensively and defensively that has to be rewarded, our midfield needs it.

Our ability to transition the ball from D50 to F50 has been good this year, but we can't expect to lose centre clearances that badly and be winning many games.

Not a midfielder... I only remember Max Gawn polling well in this award outside of the pure midfielders (and he plays like a mid anyway). Parish had less score involvements than Crouch, only 2 more tackles and 3 more clearances. Also went at a lower DE than Crouch. Basically, offered very little defensively and was ok offensively. I don't understand how both coaches rated him a clear BOG, but also shows why Crouch seems to be getting continually backed in by Nicks.

We only lost them by 1: 15-16! The stat where we were really bad was marks, especially inside 50.

Langford would be in our best 8-10 players.

AMT will be back shortly, has played the last two weeks in the VFL.

All up from our best 22 we were missing Merrett, Stringer, Langford, AMT, Jones and Stewart with Cox and Cutler borderline but both would have definitely played today if available.

Add Snelling getting subbed out at half time and that’s 5 of our top 10 from last seasons B&F missing, we were seriously undermanned.

Saying Seedsman out is as significant as Merrett out is surely a piss take?
Langford is borderline best 22. Stringer and Merrett were only your significant out compared to Seedsman who is one of if not the best wingman in the AFL so he is as a significant out as Merrett. Getting subbed out isn't missing and has a lesser impact due now due to the medical sub.

You did leave out Parish having 12 more touches than Crouch, almost half as many again.

Parish was probably the only 4 quarter stand out to be honest, not necessarily a 10 vote game by other games standards but given the low numbers spilt up between another 6 players, he was the clear stand out.

Nicks reacted a quarter too late putting Keays on him, still an excellent move by him after half time though.

Have a spell pal.

Langford has finished top 10 in our B&F the last two seasons, he’s quite comfortably in our best 10 players.

AMT not a significant out? Please.

Even if you want to cancel out Merrett for Seedsman, Stringer is just as important, that’s a massive out for us.

Stewart is our number 1 key defender.

We were massively undermanned, if you can’t admit that then I feel sorry for you.

Is Rachele the highest placed Rising Star eligible player in the AFLCA leaderboard?

On SM-A325F using BigFooty.com mobile app
Yes but looks like some fun and games in the Collingwood votes this round to get Daicos in the mix. In a West Coast win:

McGovern 5+5
Rioli 4+3
Daicos 0-4
Crisp 3-0
Barrass 1-1
Mihocek 2-0
Grundy 0-2

(the last 3 either of them could be 1-1, 2-0, 0-2)

So one of the coaches had Daicos second best on ground. The other didn't have as top 5.
