The initial discussion was ABAB asking who has said Laird was an A grader so I posted his post where he said he was.
He’s now trying to say he didn’t really mean that because you can’t grade someone when they are young, this is despite Laird being in his 7th afl season and age 25 when he made the call.
The milera bit was just a joke about ABAB saying he didn’t actually mean what he actually posted.
No, I did say that but you mistakenly read the post out of context or deliberately didn't this again like you did last time when you dug up my other old post 😂 And you didn't answer my question last time, do you think Laird is a C grader like your tweedle dum does?

Definitely not.
But I feel like you’re doing exactly what you’re crying about and taking ST out of context and repeating it ad nauseam.

No, Tweedle dum has admitted this is what he said and has "owned" it. I didn't take what he said out of context, he has admit it to multiple posters already.

My 11 yo son is going to take a while to recover from that one…30 mins in tears post match which is not great when our non-AFL cousins are here and don’t quite understand the situation!!
My son was 10 when we went to the 2017 grand final. He bawled from halfway through the third quarter til well after the final siren. Then the following year in the Showdown when we got the lead back only to have Motlop kick the winner for them with seconds to he threw himself on the floor sobbing. That was the day his youthful joy of football died....
Now he's 16 and as jaded as the rest of us on big footy. Came home from game pragmatically and said "It's ok mum, we're not winning the premiership. We need to finish lower and draft another top mid before we can win a flag"...

Here is some critique then:

Midfield still needs work (obviously). Dawson has had a rough couple of weeks. Laird is very good but he’s not good enough to carry the midfield. Hitout/clearance skew shows a real problem with personnel or setup or both. Worrying that Nicks went almost exclusively with old guard in the last q.

Really, we need to swallow some Ls to get more midfield minutes into younger promising players. Maybe give Laird a half at halfback every week? Stick to the plan of no Sloane in there, despite his form?

Can’t have a rebuild without some pain.

No 119, I wouldn’t. I consider myself as an inaugural member of this club who has been to 3 grand finals, numerous interstate trips and spent thousands on this club as anything but a fickle supporter.

And I take offence at some pip squeak who is sensitive to having a game reviewed which saw us blow a four goal lead at home and elements criticised, suggesting “fickle” supporters don’t deserve to go to a GF.
well the entitlement ! you aint the only one who has followed the club closely and been to the above events pumping out big $ for memberships and corporate hospitality? Out of interest - and not related to this current point - have you been to :

  • first trial game vs Dons 1991
  • first game for premiership points vs Horks 1991
  • all 3 MLB finals in 1993 . God the prelim was real heart break with our (again) bad goal kicking and also absolutely biased umpiring
  • the other big MLB finals (2002 prelim, 2001 elim vs Carlton, 2007 buddy elim, whatever year (early 2000's) 'hone' final vs Dees at the MCG ?

Just interested in how many other passionate supporters - which you certainly are - games they have been to over the years

well, by George, I am going to disagree with you here old mate re being a fickle supporter. You and a couple of the other fans 'takeover' this board with negativity with these sort of losses but are all beer and skittles if the difference was 2 points the other way (eg the Rachele overturned goal for touched which I am not convinced tv replays could overturn that decision). but you keep being you and i hope you are truly happy with life and hopefully your club makes you happy one day :)

Jones 2.2
Pedlar 2.2
Rankine 1.2
Rachele 0.4
Soligo 0.1

There's your game

Tex may have kicked 1.0 on the stats sheet, but to kick our third behind he also ignored a free Pedlar and Keays running past at full tilt, and Rachele and Rankine in a 2 on 1 and blazed away at goal from 80m out. A shot that was only ever going to get rushed or turned over as Quaynor was goalside of Rankine. Even dropping it on Rankine's head in a 1 on 1 would've been better as Rachele was next in line to crumb. He bottled that big time. This one doesn't end up looking as bad as he goals from the kick out.

But also 2 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter, 3.10.28 to 2.4.16, he takes a mark on the 50. He's got the journey from there, but this time he does the opposite. Doesn't even consider slowing the game down and icing the clock and instead kicks immediately to a Rachele v Moore 1 on 1. Ball pinballs back up the other end where a minute later they kick a goal.

1) This is the 3rd game they lost that should absolutely been won.

2) The set shot kicking was atrocious yet again. It is unbelievable how often we pull behinds from spots that should be goals.
At this level 35-40 meters straight on should be made

3) I do not think we will make the 8. It is because we still do not have professional level goal kicking skills from far to many players
In the (literally) cold and hard light of day @ 0950 on Monday morning, I'm still in a state of horror/shock at last night's goalkicking and the painful, one-point loss.
1) It was the effects of the heat that got us (a week after GWS) vs. Richmond, but poor goalkicking has been a factor in all 3 losses, for sure.
2) It's mindset. Determination. Sheer force of will inside that makes a player kick those easy shots for goals, or miss.

3) yes, I doubt that we will, as well.
Next 4 games are Cats-in-the-hellhole-cattery/Saints (AO)/Bulldogs (away)/Lions(AO) and the only one I can see us winning is the Bulldogs game. Maybe. That'll put us at 5-6 with a diminished %. We'd have to win 8 out of the last 13 to be sure of 7th or 8th spot. I don't like looking too far ahead, but 6 out of the last 13 is a good chance.
8? Doubt it.
I posted this several pages ago:
"What Nicks needed to say to them at 3/4 time was:
" This mob have a reputation from coming back to win from behind. They will try to come back.
<<pause>>
DO NOT LET THEM.
<<pause>>
You're where you are because of how you've played so far.
Keep running. Keep backing up. Keep looking for a mate. Keep the ball moving our way.
Keep doing all the things you've been doing and the goals will come.
One-more-quarter. Dig deep, back each other up.
Make it happen, fellas
"."
Jones kicked us ahead by 22 points in the last. Nicks should have told them to keep going, attack, harass, tackle, scrag, make it 28, make it 34 etc.
Instead, Nicks shat the bed. He took off one our best to that time, Soligo :confusedv1:, for a useless Schoenberg. Later, he moved Dawson back (that message spreads subliminally to everybody --- RETREAT, GO DEFENSIVE) and he reverted to the Old Guard in the midfield.
Like a shark, Collingwood smelled blood in the water. Emboldened and confident from previous wins-from-behind they got a second wind and, well, you know :eekv1:.

What's hard to take is listening to the Collingwood come from behind story for yet another week. We basically handed them win. Nicks says its not a trend? 3 losses from 7 games off 3 bad goal kicking games. Ranked 18th in the league for goal to point ratio and apparently we don't have a problem?

To lead for all but 20 secs.

Our kicking for goals cost us but our midfield should equally take the blame. We were smashed in clearances and especially in that last qtr.

To be 4 goals up early in the last and lose is inexcusable. I don’t care we pushed a top team, if we miss the finals by one game that will have little consolation and if anyone is happy we got so close they accept mediocrity.
No one is happy we got close.

We should have had the maturity to hold on, so hopefully there are lessons being learnt.

Rachele is definitely slicing his kicks at the moment. Seemingly wide right has been his issue for a few weeks, both in set shots and long field kicks.

I'm sure he gets it back in touch soon, but might be good to bring him closer to goal for a game or 2 and get his confidence back.

If we fall in a heap now then no, of course not.

We had some great early wins in 2021 and 2022 also.
prepared to put some hard earned on this? I will offer odds 1.2 to 1 that we win more games than each of the last 2 seasons, hence showing improvement (esp as last year half the wins were against complete rabble being Weagles and Kangas)

Good:
We are building a brand of footy that is going to win finals.
Possibly, but not while your next comment remains true:
Ugly:
Mathew Nicks is a tactical failure.
Both the Crows and Nicks are learning together, but Nicks will need to be more astute, tougher, and bolder. He has no killer instinct and that rubs off on the Crows.
I think VB has to go, as well. The midfield (dis)organisation is dire.

Betts are off Good call on Daicos - we restricted him to 27 @ 56%. I scoffed at the idea but it was achieved and we nearly got over the line
Nick Daicos was inconsequential compared to normal form but he’s so good that he just lifted his pressure acts and defensive acts to compensate

The problem was his brother tore us apart in second half

Both absolute guns
