Review Good/Bad v Essendon, Round 4

The issue is our young kids are a downhill skiers at this point in their careers.
Menzel, Hampton, Milera, Atkins really need to go work harder when the other team puts the pressure on.
They need to gain a harder edge to their play like Sloane, Crouch and Knight (Knight may have been a bit quiet in parts but you can never knock his hardness at the ball.)

Hard to be disappointed after a 10 goals win, but also good that we don't think we played great throughout.

Plenty for the coaches to work with. Plenty of upside.

Kelly's injury is bad - starting to get thin down back.
Need CC to be ok for next week.

We need to persist with Hampton. Brings something unique and is building. Give him Thommo's golden ticket from 2016 and let him develop. Will be elite IMO.
He would want to get a hurry on. He is 24 years of age and played over 50 games.
He isn't the player Knight is yet and he's only played a dozen games and is 2 years younger.

Happy that we won but third quarter was discraceful. Team looked tired in the second half. Walker, Sloane, Betts, Laird, Smith, Jacobs, Lynch all good. Mackay, Milera, Atkins, Menzel all poor. Milera not up to it currently, no confidence and does not work hard enough. Big improvement is needed against the better teams.

Well we played well enough to turn what would be considered a danger game to crow sides of old into a ten goal win.
Midfield a bit shaky when we're not getting first hands to the ball but B Crouch to come back in next week you'd think, and we'll be the better side for it.

Smith hot and cold?? Hot only for mine. From that ripper contested mark he took at the beginning, he was sublime.

Had a few howlers, including kicking to an Essendon player from the kickout and kicking into the man on the mark - also from the kickout. Embarrassing few moments but I'm satisfied with his game otherwise.

Good to get a win after the showdown. Was worried about more injuries, in particular hammys, and it looks like Charlie picked up one.

I dont think Essendon are a bad team. They have some poor players like Stanton but they have some very very good ones in Merrett and Heppell. I thought they way they bring the ball through the middle and their forward entries are up there with any team in the AFL. All comments point to us being poor, but credit goes to the bombers.

I thought Hampton showed plenty again. I just think he is running out of time to convert a nearly good game into an excellent game.

I also dont subscribe to picking out Mackay for this game and somehow his possessions were padded and everyone elses were just normal. Once again, he wasn't good, but he wasnt bad. I don't agree that our next lot of outside players would do much better. Same goes for Milera today. He wasn't good, wasn't bad. I do agree with those that commented that we can't carry both. But as to who comes in as the next outside player, I am far less convinced of Beech. My feeling is that he will be worse than Mackay and Milera. I would prefer we play Greenwood in place of one of these two as an extra contested player. This would free up one of the outside players as they rotate inside. Otherwise, if our structures demand the extra outside player I would prefer to overlook Beech and throw Gallucci in the deep end and see how he swims.

But if CC is out next week, then for me Greenwood is next up.

I wonder if the problem with Mackay is that the club sets his standards too low. His good was pretty good, breaking the lines, hitting forwards with fast movement, but he just goes missing too often. In my opinion it doesn't stand out as much this year because of the outside run we have, but we all look for him because we all know him. I want to think that Brouch will have another stand out match tomorrow and he will come in for Mackay, but in reality it'll be one of the younger mids who is dropped instead.

I'm not sure if it was obvious on the TV, but the only non-entitys out there wete Milera and Dmac. Dmac failed to convert easy junk time possesions and milera was missing in the 2nd and 3rd. Finally in the 4th he started kicking it (and well mind you).

Defense was poor but i believe it was just an off night. Laird and Smith the only stand outs.

Menzel was a good target up forward and put on enough defensive pressure to warrant another game or 2. Hampton's work rate off the ball was great as per usual, just didnt quite make as many tackles stick as usual. Must be one of the fittest blokes in the squad.

The only players that were questionable defensively were Milera, Dougy and Dmac.

Once again thankfully Milera seemed to be almost forced by a certain passage of play early in the last to kick, which saw him gain confidence and start utilising his weapon when he got it.

Charlie played well until he went off and couldnt run at full pace afterward.

Lynch didn't have a great game but he still kicked 2 goals. Gets a pass mark for me.

I thought he was good. But what shits me about him is that he doesnt put in defensive pressure effort. At times I thought he was injured with how slow he was when closing down their defenders. But then when he needs to get on the end of the ball for a shot on goal he runs with his full speed.

I though forward defensive pressure tonight was one of our worst I have seen for some time.
