Review Good/Bad v Hawthorn, Round 2

When Fox, K-Rock and Triple M Melbourne calls are all blasting the umpires' treatment of Adelaide then it must've been a rort.

FANTASTIC coaching to shift momentum, again.

A satisfying win. Just one those "f*ck you" wins. Will now enjoy the replay on 7.

5aa divided, rowie not happy, one of the others thinking it was fair...

Good

We finally beat the Hawks.
Pyke seeing Clarko play a different formation and adjusting in play. Had he waited till quarter time the game would have been over.
DMac's last quarter
Sauce all game. If he does not get three Brownlow votes for that game he never will.
Charlie, he is becoming the complete player
I appreciated M Crouch's game. He is still quite young, but now our engine room. At every pack and takes the knocks but keeps going.
Team contested marking
Lynch getting back into form, I would have dropped him last week. I was wrong.
Eddie's goal
Hampton starting to gain confidence and using that sidestep. He will blow a game apart soon.

Bad
Kelly, sorry but he is out his depth
Missing set shots, it is a Crow thing, we need to fix it.

Ugly
Jenkins
THAT holding the ball decision.

Once Pykey reset after seeing their high formation I was confident we would win. It was a defensive ploy by Clarko that although allowed for some free flowing goals, was actually a negating tactic to stop us. Once Pyke got our guys on the defensive goal side closer to their forwards I felt the game would eventually be won. The game was played on our terms after that.

To be fair to Clarko a lot of coaches would not have reset that mid quarter and it would have worked for them.

Well done on today's win Adelaide. Your team is on the verge of something special in 2017.

The Crows style of play is fun to watch and they tore us to shreds after quarter time.

The Crows have the right mix of talent to go all the way and win the 2017 Premiership and I reckon they will win it.

Good luck for the rest of the season. I hope Jenkins is okay.

Came back well after a typically insipid Crows on the road start.

Hawks on the wane. Better teams won't allow us the luxury of working our way back into the game.

Absolutely crucial the coaches don't ignore the first quarter. It sums up exactly why we have been unsuccessful for such a long period. Need to heed the warning signs this time.

Yes. We were outcoached in the first. However, the main thing that annoyed me was our habit of handballing short to each other in ever-decreasing circles until we got caught: it was pathetic. Thankfully, that reappeared only once for the rest of the game.

Some extra stats

Sloane with 42 pressure acts. Crouch with 32, Cameron with 31 and Hampton with 30.

Talia with 14 of his 20 possessions as intercept possessions. Hartigan and Sloane next best on 7.

Walker with 12 score involvements, Gov with 10 and Betts, Jacobs and Lynch with 8.

Sloane led with 507 metres gained. Smith had 447, Cameron had 413, Mackay 385 and Lynch 362.

Astonishing: David Mackay. Work mates got me a number 14 jumper when i was changing jobs last year as a parting, ironic, gift...i am genuinely going to start wearing it. Clutch performance, clutch goals, gut running...honestly could our new structures/selection surrounding him with more running players be freeing his game? Similar to how having only one KPP up forward means they are easily targeted, but throw up a second key forward and both play better?

Great:
  • Arrogance and finishing of Atkins
  • Talia taking intercept marks
  • McGovern's marking
  • Betts, Laird, Sloane as usual.
  • Cameron's manic pressure and blistering pace.
Good:
  • Ottens played exceptionally well, strong marking and good decision making.
  • Jacobs looked back to his best against good opposition.
  • lynch found plenty of the ball.
Bad:
  • Jenkins injury, hopefully not too bad and quick recovery.
Horrendous:
  • That holding the ball decision, i thought it was freekickhawthorn all over again...notice how that decision manifestly impacted the momentum (the crows had a run on, and then Hawthorn got the last 5mins of the quarter for momentum). People won't make a big deal of it because crows won, but honestly the worst decision i can ever remember seeing - the tackle was front on...how could it possibly be in the back? Paul Roos was very critical, and he seemed pretty understated for the rest of the match.
Please, please, please don't ever bring S Thompson back. Our midfield looks so slick, we are slicing oppositions up like we used to get sliced up when concrete boots Thompson was creaking around the field last year.

We're close but can't coast on the bits we dominated after quarter/half time.

Pykey did see the warning signs and the team formation adjusted mid quarter. We won the second half of that quarter and had the game on our terms from then on.

We were in danger of being ten goals down early had nothing changed. I think that is a genuine learning from the Swans Final to not wait till quarter time to make a formation change.

Sloaney and Jacobs with absolutely MASSIVE games. Lynch finally into some very good form, too.

Mackay being clutch is an absolute ****ing breath of fresh air

Betts, Tex, Otten, Laird all good

Charlie electric once again, still think he'll end up as an AA at sometime in his career

Mrouch with some good work inside

Hampton building, 10 tackles!!!

Douglas and Kelly both disappointing

Hope JJ injury isn't too bad

Sloaneys clutch moments in the last quarter and his 15 tackles

Jacobs marking around the ground haven't seen that since bout round 15 last year he's back

Lynchys 14 marks and link up play

Charlie's pure speed and hardness with polish now too

Eddie

Tex second half

Knight and Atkins they both can be great players for us

Probably the most impressive aspect of the Crows win, was that they came from behind around 4 goals to beat the Hawks who won their previous 7 against us.

Lets be honest, we have seen the writing on the wall for years. Credit to this team for turning around a dire situation at one stage.

Crows on the road?

We started nearly as badly vs GWS at home.

Hampton seems to get caught alot. I am liking him tho. His agility looks good. I think he just needs minutes.

Agree.

The more time he plays the more he will understand how much time he has to dispose of the ball. Definitely has the speed.

Irrelevant.

When the game started our players showed once again they weren't up to it.

Great that we recovered and won but there should be some alarm bells.

The last two finals debacles we got jumped at the start exactly like today and a number of our players were either invisible or deers in the headlights.

We've historically ignored these warning signs only for them to come back to haunt us in September. Cannot make that mistake again.

One thing i've noticed in both games is we are fit as hell. I hate to say this but there running power reminds me of port in 2013-2014. I think were going to over run a fair few teams this year.
