It’s more of quality players in the Dawson age bracket that’s the gap for us . We don’t need more 32 year olds
I'd regard Dawson as a senior player

The problem is they're very expensive in terms of trade capital and salary. It's rare players who are worth the cost would want to come to a basketcase when they're entering their prime.

So we'll need to start with some freebies ie older guys which allows us to keep our picks

I think we could very much use an experienced leadership player in defense. There's plenty of spots back there.

I also think we could fit one on the half forward flank where really none of our kids should be playing

Berry Best.
Murray much better when put onto Lewis.
Thilthopre better today but my god he does some frustrating things.
Butts a day to forget.
Hately sloppy.
Milera, I’ll get slammed for this again but whatever, just not good enough. 9 disposals with no hurt factor.
Nicks, sack.

In the first half we couldn’t kick, couldn’t handball, couldn’t mark, looked slow and tackles weren’t sticking.
Second half was better but we couldn’t make the most of our opportunities and we do stupid stuff to kill our momentum. Then in the end, like always, the oppo runs away with an easy win.

The problem is that they’d drop one of the kids to bring that player in rather than ditch the likes of smith and crouch to make way.

So we get nothing? Not even compo? If we get nothing they may as well keep him for another year. If he gets offered 2-3 years they should let him go.

I don't think there is much interest in Tex. Just his management throwing around rumours to help negotiations. He is still good for maybe another year but carries an enormous amount of baggage that makes him not worth the risk.

Not sure I’ve ever felt so despondent about the team. Anyone got any positives to give hope??
 ... about the team ... um .... ... er ...... how about ...? ... ...

:(

Nope, got nothin. :disappointed:

P.S. ... and I said ... what about ... Jordan Dawson ...?
and he said ... I think ... I remember the player.

and he said ... I think ... we both kinda like him
and I said ... well, that's ... one thing we got. ... oh, and Berry.

Walker rightly cracked the shits with Berry for not atleast putting the ball to his advantage.

When was the last time a kick from Laird, Keays, Smith or Berry went to the advantage side of one of our forwards?

I’m not talking about scenarios with Smith’s lace out to a free forward, I’m talking about where our mids needed to kick the ball to a contest - when was the last time they kicked it to the advantage side of our forward in that contest?
Smith did it to Thilthorpe today, when Thilthorpe drew the free kick.

Dawson might be the first player to ask for a trade back.

Sat with my NINE Hawthorn mates today. Jeff Kennett right next to us. They had a great day out. Laughed a lot about how crap we are. Special laughs reserved for McHenry who was just embarrassingly not up to it. I feel terrible to say that because no doubt he’s a great kid.
I don’t even know where to start, which is a good indication you start at the top.
This snap was sometime in the first when I knew it was all over. The first! They were below us on the ladder!! We are just a rabble.

Phil Davis not likely to get offered another contract at GWS apparently. Wonder if he'd consider coming back.

I'll just go with the good and a couple few stand out bads.

Good:

Hamill's best game imo. I really like this guy and if his head is okay, he's gonna be a real player. Has tidied up his disposal a bit too.

Berry not too bad. Starting to break away and has confidence. Really needs to work on his delivery, but as he is he's still gonna be a pretty handy inside mid.

TT a bit more involved.

Parnell is the type we're craving. Speed, footskills and IQ. Had an almost game today.

Bad:

Entire midfield with special mention to Crouch and Hately.

McHenry.

I think any pretense the club has about being on the right track or of progress being made would be shattered by now.

Yes we're a young team & list but you want to see improvement and there hasn't been any. Regression in a lot of cases.

The problem we have is that the senior players we have kept aren't good enough to carry us through a rebuild and out the other side. They aren't good enough to keep us competitive, to bring younger players into the game and to set standards in term of performance.

Tex and to a degree Laird aside.

With no quality leadership the young players flounder and don't develop. It's not a positive growth environment. We're just copping a hammering and occasionally are all frantic enough at the same time to grind out a win.

We can't just wait until guys have 50 or 100 games because they won't develop into the players we need in this environment.

Given that we've backed the wrong senior players, or overestimated their quality in some instances (ROB, Smith, Brown, Crouch), we need to add 3 or 4 good senior guys before we worry about whether Cook or Rachele or Thilthorpe or whoever are going to become A Graders.

Previously we've spoken about guys like Shannon Hurn and Shane Edwards on this board as targets. They're both too old now but I'd be seeking out a couple of others.

Tex is really our only senior player and that's not enough.

The club would surely now realise we're staring down the decade rebuild abyss and need to take significant action.

I know Hamish cops some grief but I think the talent that has come in in recent years is actually good but the major problems lie elsewhere.
I hear ya with the lack of leadership but I feel we need to be careful going too old. I would target 23-26 year old players who are quality. I would rather one or two elite players over getting in 3 or 4 players who are past it.

Hately: For me Hately doesn't have the body strength. He gets pushed around too easily resulting with poor disposal which in turn is impacting his confidence. At the moment the way he is playing is simply not up to AFL standard. I would be putting him back to the twos and use him as a fill in until his contract is over then move him on.

Milera: everyone wants Milera to succeed with his comeback but whilst he has a few seconds of true brilliance he is not making any real impact with the team. I mentioned last week that I thought he might be turning around as he also showed some brilliant skills, but again they were only fleeting. I think he needs to go back to the twos like Hately and hope that next year he can return to be the player we all know he can be.

Berry played his heart out and I thought he wasn't given a fair go by the Umps. He was continually given in the back against him yet when it was our turn to get a free for in the back it didnt come. Berry is a shining light for the club. Soligo is also a shining light but he could get into the game tonight, nevertheless he is another player that has the know how and the skills to be a great player not today or even next year but by 2024 he will be gun.

Is it my imagination or is Butts recently struggling under pressure. Late last year and earlier this year he seemed so confident. Maybe its just me.

Not a good day given how we were handing the ball over to the Hawks so easily and how he stuffed around in defence and giving Hawks easy goals (the last three for them were due to our stuff ups) or when we had the ball in our forward area only to hand over the ball due to silly fumbling or stupid errors and I mean stupid errors.

Just spent 24hours travelling to New York, I thought i'd get on and watch a replay. Saw the score line and now I can't be bothered.

So, was it a case of same s**t, different game? looks like it.
Worse than usual.
Crouch, ROB useless. Crows' poor skills on full show. Made Hawks look like finalists. They're not.
