Also some individual player observations:
  • Soligo: what a find. That side step to open up space in the middle was sublime
  • Berry: tackling machine against massive opposition bodies. Shame he can’t kick

  • Smith: struggling to see what he has to offer lately
  • Hateley: I’m glad we’ve given him a chunk of games ro see how he goes. The answer is not very well. Amongst the worst users of the ball in the team - and that’s saying something

Nice of Melb to drop Gawn and Jackson to make a game of it, theyve done that two times now. Still too good for us. The gaps not as big as some might imagine.

Dunno why we don't occaisionally man up the oppo extra in their defence then go back to having our guy back at the contest, then man them up. It'll make no difference to us but will potentially stuff their intercept marking a bit.

Thought we did ok, helped having a dominant ruck tho.

Soligo 20 disposals, Milera 19, Berry 17 and Parnell 15 pretty good. Schoenberg and Hately with 14 and 13 were a bit down on what I would like to see.

We need to change out Rachelle. Rowe back to form. Probably need to change him out to. Probably Murphy as well. Hopefully we bring in a couple for the Hawks. How'd Cook go today? Was he up forward again? I like that we tried Dawson and Milera up there. Milera went here there and everywhere. A utility at the moment. Pity no McAdam today. He would've been handy. Still keep saying it, reckon Hamill wouldn't be a bad option as a defensive forward.

Hinge good. Dawson very good. Walker good for a lot of the game.

Showed some signs, but it’s was still a Melbourne team without a ruckman

RoB gave us 16 hit out to advantage, so we had a leg up due to their no ruck

But we showed some gumption
He unfortunately put 36 to Melbourne's advantage.

Really? Who other than berry did well in the midfield?

Thought Soligo and Schoey did some very good things, guessing you look at stat sheets and think "if only we could have Crouch back in there with his super dependable 30 handpasses"

These guys were on a hiding to nothing playing against one of the better midfield I have watched in my time and they didn't drop their heads and kept on competing.

The Good:

Fogarty – If he’s not in the game kicking goals he’s hurting the opposition. Has been an amazing turn around. Will be a 200 game player and leader. Loved his hit on Lever.

Berry – Great in and under but disposal is horrendous, really bad.

Soligo and Parnell – Smart, look composed, good in traffic but for christ sakes enough with the 180 and unders.

Dawson – The next captain.

Walker – heart and soul of the club. Must give him a 2-year contract.

Hinge/Butts – Both will be long term defenders. Big fan of both. Hinge looks a quality defender - great kick and love his aggression

10/10 for effort

The Ugly:

Field kicking. Horrible skills by foot all over the ground.

Murphy – gives us nothing.

Jones – Dumb footballer. That 2018 duper draft cuts deeply.

Rowe – Good SANFL player

Josh Rachele – Package him up in a JHF trade.

Schoenberg – He looked like a potential B+ midfielder in 2021 but gone backwards. Looks really low on confidence

Hately – poor skills, poor awareness. Not a wingman.

Grinding away to nowhere because we refuse to address the most important part of the ground. Nix isn’t a terrible coach, but he has terminal flaws that guarantees our ordinariness and his 1 club senior coaching career.

They knew they were losing the ruck, and they roved to ROB's hitouts. I thought our mids did well to break even against a superior (on paper) midfield.

Pretty good effort, not too disappointed. Of course it would have been nice to pinch a win or even hang with them til the very siren but all in all not bad.

The Good:

  • Dawson at this rate will be among our best recruits ever alongside Betts & Jarman.
  • Berry continues to be a contest & tackling beast. If he can tidy up his kicking a bit he can be an exceptional player.
  • Tilthorpe I was quite impressed with. Not a break out game or anything but he'll take time to develop, his hands and reflexes are insane good for a guy of his size.
  • Tex was his usual presence.
  • Milera may not have been quite 'good' but he was much better today, seemed to have more pace & attack on the ball.
  • Hinge probably his best game for the year, his attack was great. Faded a little but overall pleasing.
  • Fogarty not his best game in recent weeks but he just looks like he's arrived at the level week in & week out so thats a positive. Was worried he may not even come back on with that finger!
  • Soligo with a solid performance, just makes good decisions & has great intensity.
  • Butts was pretty good.
  • Schoenberg had a low possession game but I didn't mind what he brought. Certainly not his best or amazing either but added something different which helped when he was able to get his hands on it.

The Bad:

  • Hately was just a bit off the pace today, too slow to make his decisions.
  • Parnell panics too much & gets the wrong side of his opponent regularly. It's ok as he's finding his way just not probably quite AFL ready, long as he learns.
  • Rachele again just has no appetite for the contest, reliable on his set shots but I'd give him a break just for 2-3 weeks to try dominate in the SANFL.
  • Murray is a frustrating player, does some very nice things but does the opposite too. Some of his attempts to mark that left us exposed out the back really hurt.

The Ugly:
  • Jones had an absolute stinker.
  • Murphy decision was wrong and the supporters who did want to see Newchurch get a run were vindicated. It's not why we lost or anything just an opportunity lost.
  • Smith played one of the worst games I've seen, just couldn't get anything right today.
  • The old honey pot where we all get drawn in and leave ourselves far too exposed on the outside. Probably where the match was lost as it left us opened up, combine with the intercept mark factor was certainly where we need to improve if we want to scalp them again.

All in all not too bad, Melbourne just a bit too tough in the contest & clean on the outside. Margin probably fairly reflective given their 3rd quarter dominance.

Good effort. Thought the final score flattered Melbourne a bit.

Thought most of our guys had a fair crack. Walker, Soligo and Dawson were standouts for mine.

Keays and Laird crack in but they put a low ceiling over the potential of this side with their terrible footskills.

Hately should not be playing on a wing, not fast or skilled enough for that role.

Of the real negatives, Murph was an empty jumper. He's a talentless hack. An absolute scrub of a player. Jones cost us dearly with his mistakes. Rachele didn't do much but at least he kicked a goal. Some of Murray's work in the air was very poor. He needs to learn to not let it get behind him. Cost us 2 or 3 goals doing that.

Melbourne flexed why they're the premiership favourite in that one. Every time we challenged, they found a gear to absorb it.

Good:

They got beat by the best midfield in the game, but I quite liked Laird and Keays games. Both got on the scoreboard and at least tried to take it to Melbourne.
Dawson was huge for 2 and a bit quarters. Faded after moving forwards, but I'm not going to begrudge Nicks trying something to get us back into it.
Another solid performance from Soligo. I look forward to seeing what a preseason does to him.
Berry and Schoenberg had some nice moments and pressured well. As much as it came unstuck a few times, I did like Berrys willingness to drive forward out of a contest and try to hit a target.
Tex played well.
I liked Thilthorpes game. Good goal, some nice marking and felt involved.
Fog had some nice moments. Deserves a bit of credit for playing out the dislocated finger as well.
Doedee probably played his best game for the year. Good defensive work, some creativity etc.
Hinge played well. Some good body work and some nice ball movement. Boy, if he could become a 20-25 disp half back, it is sorely needed.
I liked Parnells drive today.
One of the pleasing thing for me for most of this game is we seemed to be able to hold up Melbournes transition play.

Average, but deserves a comment:

That might have been Mileras best game since the ACL. Was solid, albeit unspectacular.
Murray had a real 2nd year KPD game. Some good moments, some absolutely brain dead ones.
Rachele has faded badly, but that contested mark and goal was sweet. It feels like the rest of the season is just celebrating the little wins with him.
Jones is one incredibly frustrating footballer.

Bad:

Murphy was a non entity outside of some contested work in the first quarter.
Our third quarter. We dropped off for a quarter, again.

I come back from a month overseas and Chayce Jones is still rubbish.

Not particularly impressed with Milera, Murray, or Parnell either.
Chayce Jones is an absolute midfield beast.. at times unstoppable.

Said all the numptys.

You should've taken him os with you and left him on a remote beach, he'd be at home totally lost.

Good - effort... but Dees showed their class with ball use & dominated the 2nd half... even losing the rucks.

Poor night for our small forwards - Murphy, Rowe & Rachele. Wouldn't be against dropping all.

Unlike Soligo, Hately isn't a wingman. He should be playing inside or not at all.

Not Hately's fault, but he provides nothing close to the damaging play that we need from a wingman

Really need to find some Langdon-like outside class this off-season
There's this great defender we could try, he might be available, believe his name is Dawson or something. Not sure though

Good
Berry
Shoenberg
Soligo
Tex/Fog early
Fog hitting Lever
Crows booing and laughing at Lever
Dawson
Hinge

Bad
Ruck dominance for no reward. Rob is far too unclean to capitlaise against a bad or no opponent.
Doedee again
Smith again
Hately

Ugly
Nicks for his selection of Murphy. He did exactly what most expected of him from 99% of fans. 0 goals and single digit disposals.
Rowe escapes criticism because of selection this week but he was just as invisible as Murphy.
Jones was close to worst on ground. Im done with him and Mchenry.

Good
Tall backs
Midfield - better mix , Laird and Berry superb . Keays and Soligo solid
Pressure / full ground defence and organisation / tackle

Poor
Hately needs to play more centre square , he’s not a natural wing

Poor composure all game smith
Jones let them back in twice
Small forwards are substandard - Murphy Rachele is off and Rowe
Fog finger inj slowed him down / same re Tex cork
Need more class brought in

I feel like we are in better form like earlier in season , that bad spell looks behind us for now . 8 wins is a win if we stay with youngest team in comp but prob getting 7 maybe

Hinge good. Dawson very good. Walker good for a lot of the game.

Wing and he played rather well, though wasn't dominant. Showed a bit of class throughout.

I'd probably lean towards leaving him in the SANFL at this point in time though. If anything, I'd consider selecting Zac Taylor, seeing how Soligo has gone since his recall and Zac had a similar game today to the one that won Soligos spot back.
