I don't think we should've got Burgoyne. (again)

BUMP.

This is just 1 of a few threads, Hodgepodge has created or made his point known in other threads about how he believed it was a big mistake recruiting Burgoyne and not picking up a young player like (Lewis Jetta & Lucas, yes he mentioned we could've got Lucas, the scared of contact very soft Carlton player).

Pick 9 turned out to be Andrew Moore, 4 years on he hasn't exactly shown that he will be a star and he wouldn't have helped us in our premiership window like Burgoyne has.

Burgoyne has been immense and it's safe to say we wouldn't have won the 2013 GF if it wasn't for his match winning quarter in the prelim against Geelong that will go down as one of the best finals games Hawthorn has played in and one of the best individual Hawthorn player's quarters. He simply willed us over the line that game with crucial decisions when many players for both sides were letting the pressure get to them.

I think it's time Hodgepodge admitted he was wrong and Clarko and co made a brave but correct call in getting him over to the Hawks.

In fairness to hodgepodge if you told me a few years ago that we would pay pick 9 plus Willo for a reliable back flanker with great skills that would only play one or two elite games a year of probably tell you it was a bad idea.

I think most of us thought we would get a bigger contribution from Burgoyne but maybe it's his knees that hold him back from that or maybe Clarko loves that he can play many roles and doesn't need him in the midfield that often as players like Sewell and Mitchell in the past could only really play that position only.

We paid alot for him but what did Willo end up doing at Essendon? His knees were shot and he got a retirement package at the dons. Moore hasn't shown that he will be anything but a good solid player atm. I would still be happy with this decision everyday of the week and it's turned out to be a pretty good one. If we didn't have Burgoyne in that prelim this year, I doubt we would've got over the line.

Burgoyne is a key part of what is becoming a formidable team, team being the key word.

We tried relying on stars for the years following 2008 and IT DOES NOT WORK. Burgoyne is just another very good player to fill a post in the Hawthorn machine. We do not expect Kelly and Bartel and Corey and Selwood and Johnson and co. to come out and dominate every single week. They won a 3 premierships because Geelong had guys of this quality all over the park and one of them would inevitably bob up when they were required. That is what Burgoyne does and does brilliantly. It is not a flaw that he doesn't do it every single week, it is all part of the plan.

For a player who is an elite midfielder, tight defender, and kicks goals at critical times?
Sometimes in the same quarter - viz last quarter of the 2013 Prelim?

I'll take that every time!

If anyone had any doubts over the wisdom of recruiting Burgoyne, I suggest you have a look at the last quarter of the 2013 preliminary final. Burgoyne was the difference.

Just that photo is enough - you can see Bartel thinking "usually I do that, what the ^&%$ is going on?"

Anytime the heat's on, Silk goes to the middle and more often than not drags us out of the shit we're in. A big game player and has saved our arses too many times to count. I remember being absolutely stoked he chose us. Will be remembered as a Port gun, and a Hawk big game performer. Absolute JET.

You guys have gone through a really compressed cycle of most clubs. Poxy & old in 2004, young & improving through til '06, a very brief run at the top, then destroyed by retirements & injuries in 09.

The weird thing being there is a very real chance (if played right) you can get that most important group of 8 or 10 (from the Buddy & Hodge drafts) through another mini-semi-rebuild & flag tilt. Burgoyne can really get you someway towards that, altho I'm not sure Gibson will be such a great pick-up.

Quite an insightful post this one except for the last bit.
Gibbo has been gold as well.
