Don't like the start of footy creeping into the early part of March...It's still cricket season for a couple more weeks

This weekend usually signifies the cross over - after this weekend usually no one cares about cricket

Yet if you listen to the Pom scribes they half expect him to get the star for Jonny at home this year 🤦‍♂️

Honestly, would you pick him?

Ok he’s kept well. Absolutely no denying that and his keeping has never ever been in question.

But he’s averaged 22 in 9 innings.

I’m all ears for the ‘pick your best keeper’ argument but if your best keeper is not contributing more than 22 per innings then we are talking batting input of keepers from 50 years ago.

Yes - if it’s between him and Bairstow for the keeping spot for me it’s a no brainer

Given Bairstow’s equally poor batting form you’re taking the lesser of two evils right at the moment.

But you can’t seriously want a number 7 who is offering that
Foakes doesn’t shell chances like Bairstow that saps confidence - I’ll take a keeper over a backstop anyday

Again, if you’ve got one that is not making runs, you’re playing a batsman short. Taking chances is one thing, and yes I’m fully aware of how ordinary Bairstow is behind the stumps and I wouldn’t want him there either. I’m not advocating for him to play as one.
I’m talking about why you would want to play Foakes full stop when he can’t make runs.

Obviously he CAN bat, he’s made hundreds before.

But his form is poor. At the moment - and this isn’t just his problem it’s the team’s problem - but it’s 3 out all out. And while he is clearly trying to dig in, he’s not offering much by way of counter attack or a momentum shifting 50-70.

Even the West Indies got an 80 out of Josh Da Silva at Brisbane to turn that test.

Modern test teams can’t carry keepers no matter how good they are with the gloves, who don’t play a meaningful role with the bat and he needs to start doing that again quickly

Our keeper averaged 10 there.

Foakes deserves a decent run in the side, If he is averaging 22 over a long period of time you ask questions whether the batting is strong enough but he is averaging 30 after 25 Tests (and a relatively slow start) which suggests that he has enough batting nous.

Bairstow has also average 22 in 9 innings. And Foakes has probably saved another 30 or 40 an innings by taking catches and stopping byes than what Bairstow could do

That’s irrelevant because I’m not comparing him to Bairstow.
If Bairstow stays he stays as a batsman. Bairstow to me is competing with Pope for a batting spot when Brook returns.

I am not across county cricket enough to know who else keeps wicket beyond guys like Butler and Phil Salt (occasionally) so I would assume the comparison in catching and saving extras would be against other players

You might not be comparing him to Bairstow but back on English pitches you can almost guarantee that those in charge of England will be looking at putting Bairstow behind the stumps again.

Looking at the County stats for last year James Rew might be the one but they may not take the risk on a 20yo

Look I would assume perhaps that they would take the attitude rightly or wrongly that it’s ‘safer’ to use Bairstow as a keeper in England than it is to use him in Asia given the relative lack of time he has to spend up to the stumps

It's a bit harsh judging Foakes batting record when he usually only gets picked by England for the tougher spinning subcontinent pitches.

He very rarely gets picked for the tests with easier flatter English pitches that Bairstow gets to enjoy when he is picked as their keeper.

Well that’s subjective.
Foakes played one series in Sri Lanka and made 277 runs in 3 tests with a century.
Bairstow played one series in Sri Lanka and made 264 runs in 3 tests with a century. The only difference between the two was Foakes getting a couple of not outs to make his average higher.

Sri Lanka have not posed huge problems for England
