Its official Davis to GWS!!

It sucks, but people need to get over it really.

Clubs don't show loyalty to players, so why should it work the other way?

Davis has shoulders that are basically cooked, he needs to make as much money as he can while he can still play. He's a smart guy, he knows this better than anyone. Given what he's being offered, I'd be off quick smart too.

Particular when he's leaving a losing organisation. If you're going to play for a losing organisation, then you might as well do it for double your money at a losing organisation where the front office isn't spectacularly mismanaged.

Good luck to him. Footy careers are short, need to make money while you can. 18 game players with wrecked shoulders can't turn down that sort of offer, would be lunacy.

I'm really starting to get pissed off with all this "his shoulders are wrecked" crap, yeah right, that's why the AFC were prepared to pay him far more than they've ever paid any 20 year old in the history of the club!!! We might not be going great at the mo...but we ain't stupid altogether.

Get real....you think either the AFC or GWS wouldn't have done due diligence and had his shoulders assessed by experts before offering the big $$$$'s.

Everyone said Andrew Walker's shoulders were cactus too, look at him this year....outstanding and M.O.Y. no doubt!!

Let's see. He's clearly very prone to shoulder injuries - that's almost inarguable - and the fashion the injuries have come in has been interesting from a medical point of view.

I'd rather have him, but the amount of carry on has been hilarious. God knows how everyone is going to react when free agency comes in.

Free agency is a totally different kettle of fish because the transition of players is not unilateral and the compensation isn't dreamt up by Sheahan and McKay in their ivory towers and then shat down upon people who spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to go watch their increasingly compromised product.

Our compensation will determine how angry I am at the whole situation. I'm not happy Davis took the money, but who knows how we would really react if we were in his situation. The AFL has their own agenda and don't give a shit what Adelaide supporters feel, and I am expecting inadequate compensation again. Imagine if Bock played for Collingwood. Do you think Eddie would have meekly accepted the same deal? There is no way. I am so pissed with AFL right now. If we don't get at the very least pick 10 I'll be flipping furious but what difference will it make and I'm sure Adelaide will meekly accept whatever shit is handed to us.

What the heck?

Good on those clubs for managing their list well, leaving dollars aside so that they can hold on to their best talent, not over-paying crap players and providing an environment where players feel there is a possibility of future success. All the things we don't do. That's not the AFL's fault - it's ours.

We are the sort of club that will pick a Scott Stevens ahead of a Phil Davis. For two years. Even though he was a first round pick. And our season was shot to pieces. And Stevens was still struggling with concussion and playing rubbish football.

I don't blame any player on the Adelaide list for wanting to leave.
Agreed with all of this. Dropping Davis after he was the RS nomination, good call Craigy. :thumbsu:

It’s a bit disappointing he decided to leave but oh well, life goes on. So we lost Phil Davis, well it’s time for Daniel Talia, Will Young, James Sellar, Luke Thompson or Brad Moran to stand up and make your mark. I’m sure one of them will stand up. I’m confident we will are still on track to make finals in 2013 and then top 4 2014

GREED!

Yeah, money rules all sadly.

What peaves me is that the majority of us slog our guts out day after day for a pittance while Phil Davis was doing something he loved and getting paid a fortune for it.

Assuming injury doesn't end his career prematurely, he still would have been a very rich man at either club. Probably earning ten times what many of us do per year at Adelaide.

Just plain greed!

At least Bock was nearing the end of his career.

Very dissapointed; I for one don't wish him the best.... Sorry!

And what is the reason why the footy Gods continue to screw us time after time?

Good luck to the guys that are there to replace him, hopefully they see and appreciate the chance this gives them. Thompson and Talia have shown some promise, and as said sellar is developing well too.

I'm also glad it wasn't Walker, hopefully he sees his future here and does well under a new coach.

Nice to see a bit more positivity aiof!

However, I am confused about how this sits with your "NC has done long-term damage to our club" theory?

Stop blaming the AFL and the system. Its there. Some players stay and be loyal, others take the money. The onus is on the player.
I'm very disappointed in Davis, hope his shoulder blows in the NAB cup next year. At least with Bock we could understand the reasons behind his decision - loves to surf, Davis coming thru to take his spot anyway..
Davis was drafted by us even while he was on rehab for his shoulder! And then spends another year on the sidelines. Glad we took the risk with you, thanks.
Football is a sport. There is a business component, but if you want to be a footy player you must know you are entering a world of passionate supporters. When you defect like this you are letting a lot of people down. Its supporters like us that keep loyalty, passion and club spirit alive, preventing the ugly world of business fully taking over a sporting competition. Its also players like that...cant include Phil in that group.
It was your choice Phil, but you leave without my respect, hope you fail miserably.

That’s the beautiful thing. IMO, all the player on all AFL list are superbly skills and when they get a new game plan, a new set of instructions and new training techniques will allow their development to get back on track or completely start. With a new coach, the player will change behaviors to allow then to become better players.

A number of people on this board have said you can turn a player/team around in just one preseason. I believe with just one preseason, a new game plan and a reinvigorated set of confidence we can take a few steps forward and win anywhere between 8 and 10 games.

Yes I'm sure Moran and Sellar are the two next big things who have just been waiting for the right time to claim their rightful spot as elite AFL footballers.

Haha agreed! Sellar’s been on our list for what, 5 years, and has shown stuff all. As for Moran, this is his 7th year in the system, and he's still a nothing player. I don't care if we lost Rutten, Thompson, Talia and Young to GWS, I'd still delist these two clowns. :thumbsu:

People say this, but is it really true? Do you think Hentschel feels we showed him no loyalty, when we kept him on our list for several years after his knee was destroyed?

Clubs cut players periodically, as they required to do by the system in place. I don't think this makes them disloyal. They provide services for past players, and generally look after them as well as they can.

I think "clubs are disloyal so why shouldn't players be" has just become a catchphrase used to disregard a selfish attitude as somehow being a neutral act. Everybody understands why Davis would leave for a bunch of extra money. Most of us would do the same thing in his shoes. That doesn't mean it isn't a disloyal, selfish act.

We kept Hentschel on as a charitable act?

Funny, here was me thinking we kept him because we wanted him to play in the future.

Ask Jason Torney about a clubs loyalty.

trade Sellar if we can, use the late pick for a punt on a KPP. Like for like. We cant lose out of the deal. If it bombs, we are still in the same situation. If they turn out to half reasonable, great!

So we throw our skirt over our head and continue to cry. Awesome plan. Why don’t we just get on with it and look at the players we have and try and find a formula that will win, instead of crying over spit milk that now plays for GWS.

Look, I agree with that the 2 or 3 won’t make it but whist they are still on the list they have to be included in any potential lists.

I wonder if/how a player like Davis in making a decision like this puts a value on his reputation. No question his reputation is damaged by such a move but is that damage large or small, permanent or temporary, widespread or restricted to Crows fans?

What price do you put on respect?

Round 600-800K :(

We kept him on the list due to our own potential benefit - i.e. him making a comeback and playing good football. Not just because we were doing him a favour.

If we knew the way it would all turn out, we'd have delisted him that year and spent time on someone else.

It's a business. A cut throat one.

And players stay on our list for their own benefit too - because they have a job, and they enjoy playing. Loyalty can still be to mutual benefit.

For your analogy to be legitimate, Phil would have to know we were going to delist him before choosing to leave.

If we thought Hentschel could get back but might not ever be the force he was going to be, and that we could delist him and bring in a young kid to replace him who might or might not make it on a smaller salary, you can bet your bottom dollar we'd have kept him on. In fact, that's exactly what we did, and it's called loyalty. We stuck by our man even though the grass was looking increasingly greener on the other side of the fence, until it became clear he could not play AFL football anymore.

I think we did keep him on as a charitable act. Craig wanted to give him every opportunity of getting back to where he was before the knee injury. Writing was on the wall fairly early though. I think we were ALL surprised he got that additional year.

Did we charitably select him in the last four games of 2009, and the first three of 2010?

What tosh. We maintained him on the list because we genuinely believed he would again contribute to our team. Whether this was a reasonable thing to believe is of course a different issue.

We offered him an enormous amount of money, so not sure that argument has much validity. I guess we could have offered Phil $600k/year as well, and hoped like hell his shoulders held up and that he became a superstar.
We offered less money than GWS so had to rely on the 'other' stuff our club provides as an incentive for him to stay. The 'other' obviously didn't add up to enough, whereas it does at other clubs.

As for picking Stevens ahead of Davis for two years, that's a stretch even by your standards Carl. Two games, perhaps.
If you could just list the games where Davis was preferred to Stevens that would be great, thanks.

You know what was the most inevitable thing about GC and GWS coming in?

That we'd be the club left bleating and crying about how unfair it all is.

Shame on every moron poster here who is complaining and our stupid club. You know the rules, deal with it.
