Its official Davis to GWS!!

I just read back through this thread and a couple of things stand out

There’s some real trash takes, real moronic sludge. Imagine blaming Davis?

Drugs Are Bad Mackay? nailed it all the way through. His criticisms of an oblivious club asleep at the wheel were bang on

And following on from that; it’s interesting to look at with what we now know - that the club was steered by hopeless, conceited buffoons throughout this period

And that we were targeted as a club, by others, because of everything that we were.

It's also interesting reading some of the complaints where you could easily scratch out Phil Davis' name and replace it with Jake Lever

We basically went on to repeat the Davis situation with Lever-lite six years later

Its an outlier even now that he did a presser to announce he was leaving but in retrospect it was pretty effective from the AFC. Davis is one of only a handful of required players who never really had the fan base turn on him after leaving. People seemed to respect him for fronting up from memory.

Compare Davis to Gunton or Tippett for example

The persecution complex by a large majority of our fans has not disappeared since

No wildebeest, not even the strongest and fastest can escape the lion. Yet the weakest is always targeted first

Makes no difference the lion can feast on whomever he chooses, but instinct is just to leave the head of the pack alone and pick off the weakest

Why? It’s just law of the jungle. And so whenever clubs drew up lists of targets, ours were always considered good bets to focus on.

We were picked over for a reason. We were a shit show at the F factory

Our Gunston narrative was a lie, the club played us like fools

Thought the doco was interesting. I've always liked Phil and I remember he was touted as future captain material when he was drafted. Interesting that he was never told that by the club. Not surprised the club low balled him after his injury as well, since that's typical of most workplaces. They don't want to pay up for potential. Often, most places won't even pay up unless there's a chance of leaving.

Was nice hearing that he loved the club and players and didn't want to leave until he was lowballed. Also that he almost regretted it after 2 years with GWS and only 3 wins. Playing loss after loss can't be fun even if you're getting paid well.

I think for players of his generation this was true, thats how the Hawks managed to get a few FA's for unders during their premiership run.

Today in 2024, I think its very different. There has been a few players happy to sign long multi year deals with some very poor unsuccessful Clubs.

Another curious thing I forgot to mention that i observed reading over the thread was the continual mention of wanting to get good compensation for the 2012 super draft.

The 2012 super draft

The 2012 super draft

Man alive, that draft could not have been less super if it tried. Yuk

Would have been good to get a top pick compo.

Then lose it in Tippo sanctions...

It's weird. It was weird from the crows actually.

I'm also just jealous cos noone watched my 78 minute doco.
I did watch but no mention of barrel making or home brewing. My doco at least was purely wabbit huntin.

I remember Phil was dropped the week after he was nominated rising star. Sent back to SANFL (and played very poorly) This may have been the start of the rot. He made way for an unfit Bock who had a shocker and contributed little in our loss the following week. We weren’t aware at the time but Bock was about to head north.

So we went from having potentially the best backline in the AFL to squat in the space of 2 seasons.
Strangely neither went on to any great heights due to injury but Phil did have a good and very lucrative career at GWS.

Comments on that were very complimentary to the Crows

I don’t think anyone had issue with what Harper said at the time, but didn’t we have the presser because of immense public pressure at the time and still being in season?

Why did the Giants post it now?

I think they have done a doco (mini doco) on Phil’s career

Are we going back in time? What's Nathan Bock doing these days?
