A question for you - is the captain's position more important that being the best leader - including off-field - available?No major problem with having your Captain in defence. Certainly better than having them as a key forward.
The problem with having defenders or forwards as Captain is that they may be out of the play for long periods of time if one side is dominating.
In the case of the forwards, that's a bad thing. If the opposition are dominating then this is the time you need your Captain to step up - but being stuck in the forward line there is he can do about it.
In the case of defenders, it's no trouble at all. If the opposition are dominating, then the Captain is constantly in the play. If our team is dominating, then the ball is rarely in defence so the Captain is out of it - but with our own team dominating, who really cares?
Still, I personally would prefer the job be given to a midfielder who can be involved in lifting his team for the entire game.
