Opinion I've lost my faith in Ken Hinkley

And as Ken noted in his presser when we do win them we seem to be very good at stuffing them up.

I think that's because of the set up. It seems that far too often it is up to the inside mids to get to forward, rather than feeding it out to someone on the outside. That's the reason Boak seems to handball to Ollie, who handballs to Ebert, who handballs to Sam Gray and repeat until there is another stoppage.

If it is not that scenario, it is Boak or SGray getting a hacked kick forward, with no precision, because he has no time. The contest is lost (usually by our players all going up or the opposition taking it uncontested) and the all is quickly in the opposition forward line as all our players have followed the hack kick forward.

I think the midfield is really missing a dedicated tagger. A Kornes or Cassisi would play a role in stoppages, often clearing space. I don't have the stats to back this up up my feeling is, while it was in decline earlier, the midfield went into freefall largely when Kornes retired. Boak tried a bit of blocking last night but doesn't really know how to get away with it, hence the free to Biclavs.

Obviously, the other missing links are the skilful outside runners. Hartlett is supposed to do some of that, as is Polec. We see what has happened.

Finally, a bit of shepherding wouldn't go astray. DBJ was one of the only players consistently shepherding last night. It was part of the reason Pittard was able to play so well.

Portia someone said shepherding. You probably noticed anyway. ;)

Our set ups for takeaways from stoppages have for years been nearly as unfathomable as our kick in strategy.

Was thinking on similar lines myself. IMO Ebert could fill that role and do it well.

I know I am old fashioned when it comes to this. I must be because we haven't done it consistently for years.
It pretty much left when Wilbur did

Watching the better sides play, when there opponents start to get a run on they have players capable of knowing what to do, to arrest the situation without being told, we seem to lose the plot and when we finally work things out the game is shot.

What we are going through is definitely a football management issue. Richardson and Walsh left to take up senior positions at other clubs. They were not let go because they were doing a bad job. The people replacing them needed to continue on with the work that they started as it was working well. It seems that we have replaced them with people with their own ideas rather than adapting to what was working well with us. We changed for the sake of change. The people that it affects most are the people that are being managed. People who can see that something that was working well and has changed to suit those making the decisions rather than those working to the decisions made. We were not broken at the end of 2014. We did not need to be fixed at the end of 2014.

This is yet another thing I said in the gameday thread: they need a psychologist specialising in trauma. When the opposition gets a run on, they get flashbacks and panic sets in. It is classic PTSD.

Blocking and weaving out of contests is such a necessity to get clear and quick clearances. I barely see any of this team think from our players.

Shepherding and talking for your teammates also falls under this idea of 'team work' - we're currently doing very little of these.

Are you talking about the team or the posters? :p

You mean that thing that might stop two players going for the same ball or at least one player going in to lay a tackle on an opponent? Yeah, we don't do that.

Why would you shepherd when you can run and spread for the quick receive? Like everyone else is doing at the same time as you.

I still find it hard to believe that the rot had set in, find it hard to see how we get so close on 14 to let it all unravel just as quick. I don't see this year turning out any better than last year, and clearly there will be sackings, not Ken yet or Bass, but our midfield (engine room) is our greatest failure, beyond words. My local Goody Saints do it better. Sad and resigned to it.

My faith in Ken has just about all gone.

It’s obvious Richo (maybe a little help from Ken) devised our style & structure for 2013. Walsh didn’t change anything & 2014 was the same style & structure – We did struggle at times in latter games with our midfield and Ken & Walsh didn’t seem to do anything about it.

Roll on 2015 & Ken, with the coaching group, completely changes how we play, the players are confused. Ken continually selects his underperforming favourites. A change to our structure; dropping Lobbe & Jonas sooner and we would have made finals. Missing finals all on Ken.

Now 2016, structure and style completely changed AGAIN. Underperforming favourites continually selected, AGAIN. The look on Robbie’s face said “ WTF is this sh*t, why bother giving my all when we’ve been set up to fail”. We’ve gone from a style which the players loved and was brilliant to watch – a style that a lot of the other teams, crows included, are now playing, to,well I’m not sure but it’s crap to watch & obviously not enjoyable for the players.

Ken hasn’t got the tactical nous or the guts to make big selection calls. The Richmond game is his D Day. Go back to our 13/14 style & structure (get a couple of analysts to pick apart the Hawks & Eagles structure and combine the best for next season).

Make some big selection calls (Should have been done last week!). Lobbe, Jonas, Trengove, Hartlett, Westhoff – show we’re going to do ‘Whatever it takes’. If we keep going the way we are, all the great work & advances we’ve made over the last few years will be down the drain.

I said as much last year , his love of the players cost the PAFC dearly , did not think we would get a repeat , I was wrong .

Getting smashed in contested posessions and losing the tackle count when the opposition has had a ton more of the footy, shows players are not going hard at the contest. The setups and player selection could all be wrong but those stats don't lie.
