What happens if Goldcoast refuses what they view as a lowball offer, then what? he goes to the PSD with $800k on his head and is taken by essendon (if not north or wc) who have made it known they want him.
I’m not sure Essendon will be ok with a rankine commuting from SA, he might miss a training or two.
He wants to come back to SA, no club in their right mind is picking a player who is headed home to a different state.
And remember Essendon didn’t value him enough the first time with their offer, they aren’t upping that now to get a player that doesn’t want to be there.

You Draft on potential .....you trade on performance, hence his value is not on future AA's .....OR his wage, which was required to lever him out of GC

How many top 10 B&F's for Rankine ? ......I'm adding some mayo, but this is how a player is valued .....Dawson was top 2 in SYD's B&F and went for #17
Edit to the above post .......so Rankine snuck into the Top 10 B&F last night ......behind Holman

Hardly screams pick 5 , based on performance .........it's in our backyard to turn Rankine into a champion .....much like a business, you don't pay for the potential of what you can turn a business into

I like how the Vic media barely made a negative post when Tom Boyd did the million-dollar-a-year some 8 years ago with the Western Bulldogs.
I just checked, his one year stint at GWS - 8 goals in 9 games in 2014.
Barely showing potential, yet got a million buck offer.
And yet .....the Bulldogs were applauded, for their bold, aggressive, and imaginative move, by the VIC media

The media really are full of hypocrisy

When North snatched Greenwood from GC, the story was all about how GC scored an 'own goal'.

If he contributes to our MIDFIELD with the effectiveness that Dawson contributed to our back line, his arrival will be a terrific step in our improvement.

Our best front six next year won't include a Murphy, a Rowe or a McHenry.

Monumental step up...

Yep .....big PSD ....full of Clubs threatening to take Rankine, at his Contract Price

Hardly any team participates in the PSD anymore

People also need to remember, the preseason draft is after the free agency and trade period.

Clubs are busy finalising list numbers and the managing of the salary cap is done a long way out.

People say, 'of course North can afford 1.2 mil for Rankine'.

But, can they?

I really don't think he goes to the preseason draft and I think we want to use pick 5 at the draft. A deal will be done.

Looking at that 2018 Draft, I reckon if it was redone based on performance, Rankine would be drafted at about 10ish. He's out of contract. He wants to come home. There is no way we would be giving up pick 5 and the potential to land a high quality talent that we are desperately needing (whether that be Phillipou, Tsatas etc.), i.e. a high end mid with size.

What is left is our 2nd rounder, future 1st and future 2nd, which is plenty for Gold Coast and Adelaide to negotiate to take away for Rankine. They are probably in the best position to trade for Brisbane's 1st Round pick so that would leave them with 2 1st Round picks this year anyway. Plus all the talent they have on their list - they can replace Rankine with what they already have.

I think Gold Coast would do well if they come away with our Future 1st. We would need to back ourselves in to climb back up the ladder, but it will probably end up being a pick from 5-10 in the end anyway.

Pick 15-20 is fair.

May I point you all in the direction of an excellent article on The Roar website by Dem Panopoulos headlined "Why Crows' Move For Rankine Is A No-Brainer". It's an in-depth look at the whole situation & shows some sports journos are good at their jobs(take note Robbo, you hopeless flog!) & I think on this board we should acknowledge that Joey Montagna has been publicly backing the Crows move & taking on his nuffie colleagues on air.

Anyone else hear Roo on The Bump podcast slyly slip out "What did Charlie Cameron get traded for? I think it was pick 12". Wasnt a bad bit of seed planting by Roo TBH.

I may be looking into things, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was going to be the precedent of the Crows trade strategy.

Fair enough too. That's around the mark for me!

I would be happy with Pick 10-15.

As someone pointed out very similar stats to (rookie listed) Charlie Cameron who we got pick 12 for.

Uncontracted 25 year old pick 56 Dawson (3rd in finals team B&F) and we gave up future first which will likely be between 14-18.

Uncontracted 22 year old Rankine (10th in poor teams B&F) was a top 3 draft pick.

Like it or not, draft capital matters and we will likely need to give a pick between 10-15 and a sweetener.

When Brisbane lose next week it leaves them with pick 12.

Bundle up our midget brigade. McHenry, Rowe, Murphy and pick 18 for Rankine. GC make out like bandits with those 3. Lol.

This is a huge coup. For all the criticism we have received about our recruitment over the last few years, if we are able to bring in Dawson and Rankine with a couple of mid range first rounders that is hugely impressive. It changes the standards and dynamic of the entire club.

All of a sudden, we have a very potent forward-line. There’s also no reason he can’t play that Shai Bolton role. It leaves us one or two key players (KPD and big bodied explosive mid… JHF?) short of a very good framework.

For my 1st post, I would like to say that i'm not sure why everyone is so getting so excited about Rankine coming to AFC, you know Nicks will play him in the back pocket.

Thank god you're here, we've been screaming out for more content like this.

It is interesting Rankine's 10th placed finish in the B&F. To me, especially at a club that finished outside the 8, that screams a trade in the 10-20 range, not pick 5.

Also loved the commentary from Kingy this morning on SEN...Rankine the most "poorly advised player in the comp"...Basically talking about how he will be under so much pressure at Adelaide for that salary. It is funny, because when Lever left us, and to become Melbourne's highest paid player at the time I believe, no such comment....strange.

And Charlie Cameron was still contracted! Lucky for GC that we don't have a 3rd rounder this year so we'll have to cough up our 2nd.

Ugghh..he missed an opening. Should have said 'a contracted charlie cameron.....'

Same comments were made about Eddie Betts going to Adelaide.

Taranto is certainly worth more than pick 16. I think GWS will look to another Victorian club for a better offer. GWS do lose a bit of bargaining power though due to their bulging salary cap problem, bit like Collingwood with Grundy.

Regarding Luke Jackson, you'd think freo will have to give up this years and next year's firsts or equivalent. Lucky for Melbourne that westcoast don't have first pick in the PSD.
Freo will need to find more than that. Jackson should be costing Freo more than Rankine costs us. Jackson is a year younger and also a pick3. And looks like a generational ruckman.
