Both Berry & Schoenberg have spent significant time up forward, so they can play as midfield/forwards to deepen our midfield rotations.

Hopefully Pedlar also in the mix.
Brett Turner been delisted?

After a Burgess pre-season I wouldn't put it beyond him to contribute in the midfield either.

Big bodied midfielder/forward last time I looked?

being put up forward as only three are on the ball at same time is different to being a hybrid

my point was these guys are not hybrids they are mids

Not yet that I'm aware of.

Can't have enough midfield/forward options as we saw with Cats this year rotated not only during games but cleverly rested players for full games to keep then fresh.

My point is they have shown they are both perfectly capable of playing up forward & in the midfield!

Your definition of hybrid is irrelevant to me. ;)

Berry is pure mid and his rate of improvement would suggest he will become A grade

Schoenberg is a pure mid - inconsistent-difficult to rate or put a ceiling on him

we have some options. i didnt want 5 used on rankine either and wanted a mid taken with 5 but i do think rankine and rachele will rotate through centre bounces and surprise you

Berry, Schoenberg, Soligo all look very promising as pure mids, I agree. Will they end up as elite and take us to a premiership? Not sure on that.

I didn't want Rachele last year for the pick we used on him because it was the third year of top end picks and we hadn't picked one elite midfielder.

So who was the potential elite mid prospect taken after Jason Horne-Francis, Finn Callaghan and Josh Rachele?

Josh Ward? Neil Erasmus? Ben Hobbs?

It's pretty clear from what Hamish has said Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera was our fall back option if Rachele had been taken earlier.

HAWKS WINNING!

Last week I did a quick scan of the premiers over the last 20 years and then their midfield and from what I could see most of them did it withat least one, if not two or three top 5/10 midfielders.

Am I wrong? I might be. Can anyone remember a side that did it with value picks?

Maybe some sides did it before the top picks were decent players or something I haven't factored in.

Even if they didn't perform well on the day or were injured or some thing they probably did it week in week out for years giving them that important 5 or so years in and around the top 4 to give themselves enough chances.

I know top picks in the midfield doesn't guarantee success (Carlton), but can you do it with out them?

Seems Ward had a very good year.

We apparently offered a lot for JHF last year, which gave me hope they understood our midfield problems.....

Another 181cm 79kg short ass mid? Rachele 180cm 78kg.

well, sure, a big bodied elite mid is a definite need but if there's not one available how about short ass pure mid with speed and elite disposal?
You've just described Josh Rachele to a tee...:thumbsu:

In a way, I was hoping that Port would be allowed to use their 2023 1st & 2nd.

They would be effectively trading their way out of the next two drafts. They still have to make a minimum of 3 picks in this draft and if it's as shallow as has been mentioned, not going to be much talent left late.

And with Jonas, Boak, Dixon, McKenzie and Lycett coming to the end and a bunch of players who may or may not make it (Williams, Lord, Schofield erc.), not being in the first two rounds if the 2023 draft would have hurt.

way behind rachele
also behind soligo
To be fair, no one could have predicted Soligo being as good as he was

For what we need, though, I'd take the match-winner potential of Rachele any day over Ward, even though I reckon both are going to be damn good AFL players

Apart from the "pure" mid part.

Look, I know many on here like Rachele - he just wasn't my preference for our high pick last year.

I take it you believe he can become an elite midfielder?
If the club go that way certainly once he gets a couple of Burgess pre-seasons under his belt.

He was considered the best player in Australia at the 2019 AFL U16's National Carnival winning both the M.V.P (Kevin Sheahan Medal) for the most outstanding player and Vic Country's M.V.P......playing midfield. Then missed the whole year as a 17 year old (Covid) before playing a few games in his top age year for the Murray Bushrangers playing mostly forward again in a season impacted by Covid in Victoria.
